Guys please help!
Could you tell who should I play (in your opinion) Imperial Guard or Orks.
I am not concerned too much on tactics I am more about the lore as tactics may change in future editions while the lore will stay.

I already have some Orks (for birthday )

"Beyond that opening are my enemies. Behind me are warriors who would happily turn their weapons on me if they thought they could get away with it. Do you really think I'm doing this to try and impress anyone? I know who I am, and I don't give a greenskin's fart what anyone thinks of me."

I would honestly recommend Orks. You already picked some up, so buying into another army wouldn't make too much sense. Plus Orks have some of the greatest fluff in the entirety of 40k, and the greatest potential for kitbashing models. Plus you can never NOT have fun with Orks imo.

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."

Orks... clearly.

Much easier to convert for and build up, especially on a budget

Orks are really fun from both a fluff and modeling standpoint. They do have a higher learning curve so do not despair of you loose a bunch of games at first.

I agree with buttery commissar start with orks then move to guard

Dark Angels 12,000 Points
Nurgle 2,000 Points
Imperial Guard 10,000 Points
Daemon Hunters 2,000 Points
Tau 2,500 points

I know that orks have rich lore, but there is one thing that attracts me to the imperial guard. The heroic last standy stuff. And sure you could use loads of converting for that I just don't know: Its either the fun or the heroic.

Seriously, so much fun to play, several ways to play them, and you will never have anyone complain of you bringing cheese, so when you win a match, it really sticks it to the opponent.

Lore-wise, Orks have a grand tradition of smashin, krumpin, fightin, blastin, and lootin'. Also you can get really creative with how you build their units and what kind of gear you give them. I have a manticore that I turned in to a looted wagon. Its great, well it would be great if the looted wagon was a good unit, but like you said, tactics change, so maybe it will be better again soon.

I know what you mean and i have played orks a bit, but I think they lack epicness in their lore.
And I love armies with epic lore.

To put another consideration on the table, IG are rumoured to be due an update in February, so it's worth waiting.

Anyway if I start an ork army I'd still like an aegis defense line to give 4+ cover saves for orks and its cheaper then buying 30 heavy armor upgrades and there are less weapons out there with the ignore cover special rule than AP4 ones.

Orks have some of the greatest fluff in the history of 40k. Only with them can you have an giant cannon built that hurls snotlings at a planet, or that throws snotlings through the warp into the enemy. Or even how they can literally build dang near anything and have it work because they want it to work. Their fluff is great! I just can't stand painting that many models, thus why I've never gone anywhere with Orks

Initially starting the hobby its quite common for hobbyists to buy models from a few different ranges, and that's no harm, it lets you get a feel for the different armies.
But in terms of committing to collecting a sizeable force -it's a big project -you're going to be spending hundreds of hours of your time building, painting (converting?) them, so the crucial question is which army do you prefer the look of? Go with that. Simple as. If that means holding off and dabbling around with a few more models while you decide then do so -I've had friends bail from the hobby becasue they prematurely went out and bought a big army that halfway through painting they realised they were sick of.

If you already got some and are just starting out Orks are great fun. I kick myself every now and then for getting rid of mine. They are a converters dream. And the character the army has is wonderful.

Gameplay wise they are also fun since if you win it's great, and if you lose you know the Orks will be ready for another go soon. ^-^

If you have Orks aready, play them! They're really fun to play! I have to admit that I just see them from the other side of the table but my games against Orks were by far the most enjoyables I had.
And you can still use all the nice tanks from the IG and loot them (which is actually more fun to do regarding conversions etc ).

Go for Orks. Even the most crappy conversion looks good n orky. You can convert bitz, vehicles, etc from almost any race to make your ork army unique, even random pieces of junk could make something great.

In terms of lore you have to imagine where you would find yourself in the battlefield, up close hacking your enemies to bits or blasting them to dust with big guns. Orks would mainly be the former, IG the latter.

Orks give you loads of fun and FUN, with more fun in converting and painting. Plus you have models already. Are you comfortable with loudly shouting WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH in your FLGS?

Judging by your comments so far (and the fact that you posted this even though you have ork models) I think your heart is really with the Imperial Guard. That is more important. Play an army you'll love even when it loses.

Keep the new codex rumours in mind though.

Having IG/Evil IG, Orks, and Tau, I would greatly suggest Orks. Not only are they fun to build, but they run pretty much all aspects of the game, shooting, assault, psykers, vehicles, Orks are pretty well rounded, where Tau don't do assault or psykers, so you don't get to really learn those parts of the game.

In the end, do what's fun to model and paint. The game will change, a lot, and constantly.

Orks. Especially since you already have some for your birthday to start off with.

Orks have so much character, and you will have so much fun painting them up and playing them. But as others have said, just go with whatever one your heart is with. You can always do another army later.

Painting green is easier than human flesh tones. You can scratch build ANYTHING and it's legit.

Guard are great if personalised, but a blob of Cadians is boring to look at and paint. Make them interesting somehow by converting your regiment and they're super fun.

With both you'll be poor by the time you've completed 1000pts , will spend an hour on each turn, need to pool all dice from all games in the house for a shooting round, and you'll never get more than 23% painted.

The Guard -- the Emperor's Hammer rather than a brutish Xenos race deserving extermination. A well-customised Guard army is a delight to behold (e.g. Volpone Bluebloods: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t9YbHvrtV58/VmHKbJDaZZI/AAAAAAAAJdw/-C3uVRwSix8/s1600/Volpones-1.jpg ) or revive a sadly languishing regiment (e.g. Mordian Iron Guard, conversion bits at 'Victoria Miniatures', Vostroyans, Tallarns or similar).

I don't think the Cadians are dull. ForgeWorld's conversion bits would produce beautiful, more varied miniatures. Also there is a strong tendency to produce Guard armies that lack the feel of the Guard -- include Ogryns, an Astropath, Master of Ordnance, Commissars, Ministorum Priests, a Techpriest with his detachment of servitors anointing the sacred tanks as they roll into battle.

I expect to see you at the recruiting station!

Can't do both?

With the latest plastics and hunting down some metal bitz you can make just about any conversion, any clan, for the Orks. Goff. Deth Skulls. Bad Moons. Evil Suns. On and on and on. However, most of your horde guys will be plastic; lightweight but plastic is easier to damage then metal.

Imperial Guard plastics are Cadian or Catachan, or Scions for troop choices. Hunting down old-range metals allows you to collect Tallarn, Mordian, Steel Legion, and even more Cadian and Catachans.

Either way there are third-party conversion bits for Orks as well as Imperial Guard. So from an artistic standpoint it's up to you and what you want to create.
From a personal standpoint i would say it's Xenos or non-Xenos. Guard for me please!
