Every one has their own flavor when it comes to the Imperial Guard. It seems like there aren't many of us out there anymore who don't play straight up Cadian armies. At the places I frequent I'm one of 9 guard players but only 2 of us play non-Caidian armies. I play catachan, he plays Pretorian. We have both been playing for a while. Him since 2nd edition. Me since third. So what is your flavor of Imperial Guardsman. (Astra militarum doesn't exist. Even the commissars agree it was a poor choice to change to)

I paint my Guard in an urban camo scheme. I started off with a mix of Catachan and Necromunda models. I've now added some Infinity and Raging Heroes models too, so it's fairly mixed.

I run a superheavy tank regiment with Mars pattern Baneblades as the company command tanks and the Phaeton pattern tank (if GW standard plastics are still called the Phaeton) as basic vehicles.

The actual regimental command vehicle is an Auxilia-pattern Stormhammer and there is a company of Phaeton Stormswords as well, though through regiment is mostly the standard Baneblade (3/4 companies).

Sounds like a cool concept. I have some Penal Legion guys I have them all modeled with plasma weapons I swap them into my armies when I bring plasma so when it overheats we don't lose anyone who didn't have it coming.

My guard is supposed to be remnants of many regiments abandoned or lost by the imperium so it's a mix from many different factions. This is basically a fluffy way of saying that I wanted to mix and match and customise. The file and rank is mostly regular cadians, as that is what I started off with, with some catachan and SM bits. I've got a couple of squads of elysians as storm troopers/drop troops. I've also got a few squads of dkok that'll eventually be veterans whenever I have time to paint them.
I've chosen to mix the paintstyles heavily for the different factions of guardsmen while still keeping a general theme of war ravaged soldiers with no relief.

I play my small regiment as Chem Dogs, penal guard powered by stim drugs and personalized gear. I use Renegades and Heretics to model the rules correctly. And they seem to do very well despite it just being two chimaras w/ vets, 2 squads of mutants/hopped up ragees, and 2 artillary pieces

I have 2 small guard forces. One is mechanised Vostroyans, the other is a mostly armoured force with plenty of artillery and some infantry in support. The infantry supporting the second force is made using mostly Cadian bits, but heavily customised with FW hostile environment as well as 3rd party bits. I am now looking to adding some air support with Valkyries and Vultures.

I also have a Renegade force using the FW rules, but so far I only have a command and 2 infantry squads. I don't know what direction I want to take them in yet. If only I had more money...

I also very much would like to do a IG force using Elysian bits combined with 3rd party legs (Elysian leg poses are rather awkward) and camo cloaks. But that would just be sooo expensive!

My guard are infantry heavy. The ashrats are my own stand in for iron hand and his crew. And are made of empire flagelents and converted chaos cultists. I want them to look like fallout raiders loyal to the goldenthrone. I back up large blobs of mans with priests for a fluffy good time. I also use empire minis for my Cadmus house guard. Lots of heavy weapons and some rough riders. Both units are used to support my knights. More as love of converting than pity to my opponents hence the lack of any cheese.

I Actually have 3 contigents of Guard. A Fully mechanised Vostroyan Veteran Army (1850 points of Vostroyans in Chimeras), a Armoured Battlegroup of 6 LR one of them a Commissar Tank and a Cadian Platoon with a boatload of Cadian and Catachan Heavy weapons.

Pick up some war hammer fantasy battles empire statesmen and use their legs/ heads / arms and use extra bits you have laying around for weapons. Or you could buy heads that have gas masks from

That should fit the conscript/ DKOK look

My guys are third party Steel Legion with heavy armored support. When the updated IA2 comes out, I'll likely run them as an Armored Battlegroup.

I have Vostroyans: gorgeous sculpts in TERRIBLE weapons configurations. Power swords and power fists and plasma pistols and mortars and heavy bolters, oh my. I've also got some FW Renegades who I share the vehicles between, works pretty good.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Nice to see this kind of thread, always an occasion to have access to others' ideas.

My IG is a regiment based in a far-distant planet on the northeastern border of the Imperium. They are mostly mechanized infantry dedicated to shock tactics, with heavy artillery support (but very limited tanks in exchange). They are particularly hateful against xenos and heretics because of their isolated location, making them completely merciless on the battlefield. For these reasons, they often escort Ordos' agents on the nearby Halo Stars.

You can see them in my signature, for those interested.

- 22nd Rhayé Storm Division : 2000points (Spetsnaz-themed IG)

- Ordo Xenos : ~700pts

So? I make meltas out of the GL keep the flamers and plasmas as is and convert the Heavy Bolters to LC. At least that way everything is useful. The Senior officer has a hidden PF so no worries there most of my Sergeants/officers have plasma pistols. The model range seems to want to be played in a Veteran Mechanised setup.
Those Mortars though.... No hope there

I have a good amount of the old Mordian models and then quite a few guardsmen based on the cadian sprue but painted to look like slightly more armored Mordians and have WHFB Empire heads and bitz to make them look a bit more victorian.

My IG has cadian bodies, but empire heads. I want them the be an artillery regiment. But man is that hard to do ith the codex and even FW because they all have the same slot, heavy. So Im gonna run them as Renegades now with Ordnance Tyrant so I can finally make it fluffy, kinda.

GW still sells virtually the entire Steel Legion line on their website. You can have your local store order it, and have it delivered directly to them. And crazy as this may sound: they've only seen a 1 cent increase in cost for the basic squad over the last 15 years!

The first Arkan Volunteer Group is here to provide support.

These guys are an unofficial imperial guard regiment that is made up of PDF veterans. They are supported and supplied by their homeworld. This gives them the freedom to go where they please, but leaves them with less logistical support. They specialize in long range penetration, and jungle/forest warfare. The nature of their homeworld has given them an abundance of skilled pilots that provide transportation and air support.

Lightly armed and armored penal legion drop troopers. The perfect drop troopers, from one perspective; you don't have to worry too much about getting them back once you kick them out of the Valkyrie.

Still looking for a model set I like for their look, and it almost certainly won't be for regular 40k, but I definitely have a picture of them in my head.

I play the Vostroyan V (5th) Combat Division, known as the "Victors", comprised of the 66th Firstborn Armored Infantry Battalion, the 714th Firstborn Tank Battalion, and 493rd Firstborn Armored Field Artillery Battalion.

This combat division is mostly mechanized veterans and command elements, backed up by Leman Russ tanks of the 714th and Griffon Mortars belonging to the 493rd. I play it as a somewhat mobile (for Guard, anyway) force with some limited air support in the form of a lone Vendetta and Valkyrie flyer.

That's my contribution. Thanks for reading and take it easy.

PIX PEOPLE! POST SOME PIX DANG IT! WE ALL HAVE CAMERAS IN OUR POCKETS AT ALL TIMES SO POST SOME PIX!

Ahem...

Models wise my (current) IG army has all metal 2nd edition or Necromunda figues, including 40+ Cadians, (count as Storm Troopers), 40+ Mordians, 80+ Redemptionists and Cawdor and the core of 60+ Tallarn (vets).

Fluff wise they're an Inquisitor's personal force of Strom Troops (Cadians), Imperial Navy (Mordians), Imperial cultists (Necromunda), and fanatical vets (Tallarn).

My normal 2000 points is all vets with carapace, storm troopers, 2 Vendettas, 1 Valkyrie, chimeras and a manticore. No heavy armor, no BS3 guard, no 5+ saves.

Mainly it was to get around my lack of models. But ever since I went a bit crazy on ebay I can field a more normal force, still playing around with what it will look like.

I'm thinking now of 3 50 man blobs, backed by Lemans and Chimeras, with 2 Inquisitors thrown in for flavor.
