I saw on BolS that apparently the new 30th BD Marine is able to be used in place of a marine of your choice for free. He has an 18" instant death, rapid fire s5 ap 2 combi weapon. Seems good. What do you all think?

The title is a little unclear for what you are asking. I am sure this thread should go into tactics.

Indeed on topic it certainly can be a REALLY nice hit or miss anti riptide or the like. especially in a drop pod.

The only restriction is that he replaces a “Space Marine” so if you are just running scouts, you are out of luck. But you probably have a guy to trade out.

But he has 20-40 points of free gear, depending on how you want to estimate things. Just for shelling out for a limited edition model.

Might be a good business model to get these guys flying off the shelves, but it’s Pay to Win rules writing at their worst.

Just smack the ones that do upside the head unless it REALLY looks nice and is painted to golden daemon standard.

Honestly though its a single 1 wound marine. most likely in a group of 5. if you honestly cant deal with it then i think you was in trouble already in the first place.

No one has to spend money on a special model. Just convert one guy to have a spangly bolter. Or don't convert and just decide one guy is special. I mean, the rules-writing of 40K is in the toilet, who really cares about the spirit of the game? And if people won't play you because you don't have the "official" model or you didn't bother to convert/paint one, then they're TFG and not worth playing.

And it's not a big deal that it's free. It's just one guy in a tac squad. With an Instant Death, AP2 combi-weapon that can fire twice a turn for the entire game because it's a "special" combi-weapon and GW didn't totally forget to add "One Use Only" to its description. No biggie.

Replace one of the bolter marines in a Devastator squad that's coming down in a Skyhammer. Pour on a little extra firepower.

Honestly I don't like it, but then again I am using an army that relies on a multi-wound 2+ characters and MC, so yea thats going to sting when he kills one of my 150+ point units with a 14 point one. Literally no reason to use it. But then again Grav was more likely to kill me anyway.


Also I guess GK can use him because they just state SM not Codex:SM....

I am gonna say no one but codex sm can use it. If you look at a unit it says 1 veteran and 4 space marines. This I what you can change. Gk says 1 justicar and 4 grey knight.

Ahhh so does that mean I'm immune from the Preferred Enemy: Space Marine? Chaos's day just keeps getting worse and worse...

EDIT: Actually you bring up a good point, it mean a Dev. Squad will always be missing a special weapon as the Sgt. is not a Space Marine RAW.

I'm really happy he does have something special and that GW limited to the army only having 1 of them in it. Stops some people from getting multiple of them in your army.

If every codex could have a single figure with same upgrade - then it would be fine...

This is absolutely a shameful Pay to Win cash grab. What's the tactic here? Don't buy the model and teach Games Workshop that this isn't ok by speaking with your wallet.

If you want a game tactic... take him every time, always. Why wouldn't you want to upgrade a bolter to add a S5 AP2 profile with other special rules? Yeah, you lose 6" for that shot, but still. It's a no brainer. Every Marine player everywhere should be swapping out a basic Bolter Dude for this guy. That's the main issue with this guy.

Step 1. Build a fixed point army list. We'll say 1500 points.
Step 2. Spend 30 USD.
Step 3. Your army list is now better.

Awesome job. High fives all around at GW HQ.

It's just a bit of fun. in 40k the pregame discussion specifically gives the players to include/exclude models from army selection.

As it is a free upgrade, if you don't want to play games against this guy it takes zero list rejiggling for your opponent. He just gets swapped out for a normal bolter marine, no problems.

I won't be surprise if every tournament ever disallows the selection of this model, as the rules are clearly not for those types of games.

Stores and people are weird man. Some think just because they can, that they deserve the right to play whatever; GW opened up that mindset with this.

I completely understand why some players think it is lame.

Because clearly an upgrade like him being both completely free and only available to a select few factions is the epitome of fun and fairness...

Now, now, I didn't say it was fair.

Even though I can buy/run this guy I wont. Shameless pay to win and a hideous model. Goes against everything I got into the game for.
