I know this has probably come up about a half dozen times, I am just curious.

I at one point had 5 40k armies, now I have a little 40k stuff for my Fists, which I never use anymore and my daemons, because I will eventually start Word Bearers.

I run Mechanicum, Alpha Legion, and Imperial Fists.

I can build out several different lists using multiple Rites Of War for my legions and can run heavy Cybernetica with my Mechanicum, but can go Taghmata. Anacharis Scoria has me really interested in the Dark Mechanicum because they finally have something that can throw down with a primarch.

I keep hearing about the fluff vs competitive debate and to me the two go hand in hand with 30k.

Do you build out a list and stop collecting?

I stopped posting on Dakka because no one seemed interested in larger games bordering on Apocalypse, and 30k is tailor made for 3000+ point non apocalypse games.

the fluff. simple as that

as for how and why I build my armies: I get a core that fits the fluff (tactical squads + apothecaries for DG) and then pick 2-3 'themes' of the army to build up (in my case: termiantor spam, chem spam, dread spam, massed infantry, + 1 more that's slipping my mind)

mechanicum I'm going since I like the models, rules, and fluff. Solar Auxillia are in a similar situation. I chose Thousand Sons since they were my first pick way back when, but the didn't have any rules :(

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

The fluff and the models and the mostly level playing field. I play CSM so it was a hop, skip, and a jump to move over to 30k. I'm currently putting together my first list still so it might be a little bit before I finally get to play.

IMO if you aren't going balls to the wall convertin, weathering, and painting these gorgeous 30k models, you're doing it wrong.

The fluff, the models, the Horus Heresy.

Mark VI armour, my RBT01 beakies are getting used again!

I prefer the 30k background to 40k, especially the balance.

In 2010 I started to play ChSM, because I loved IW fluff. But I soon realised, that with the chaos book of that time, you can’t much play IWs. But in that time it kind of worked with Deamon prince, marines in rhinos (Remember the great times when you could charge from a standing rhino?), obliterators, termies and such. It gone a bit better when the allies come, so you could ally guard for some cannonfodder and artiellery.
And it suddenly ended with the new chaos dex and the dexes that came after that. Suddenly the chaos is only about bikers, khorne axe, spawns and helldrakes (and other stupid dinobots). A fluffy list that realy includes some marines doesn’t stand a chance against all that tau and elder nastiness. Not to mention the overskulled childness that started to creap to all new 40k models (and superugly marine fliers) since about 2013. The formations were just a final nail in the casual 40k gamings coffin. The thing that happened to 40k happened about 8 years ago to Magic. It started to be a higly competitive game with a great rangle rotation and high money demand.

And suddenly 30k came. I can play IW like IW with rules for IW. It is free of 40k nastiness and childish model stupidity. It is something like a safe haven for gamers that liked the 40k years ago and were pushed out by the new shift. 30k is better in every aspect except there are no xeno armies. I just wish FW could someday make 30k rules for xenos, so they can play balanced games with us.

A paranoid part of me just thinks, that GW ruined 40k chaos so much to push legion players to 30k.

Holy Terra.

Because I love my Primarch. Aaaaand I dislike the current Imperium. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand the models. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand no Tau (I love Tau when I run them, dont love them when Î face them). And I can throw models on the table just because I like them, and dont have the guy at the cash regester telling me that Plasma Devastators are bad.

The lack of a meta that exists with it.

40K has nearly driven me away from the game. It seems impossible to find someone with a simple CAD to play a game against anymore.

30K there are hard restrictions if you want to add a little extra punch to your army via "formations", unlike 40K which is basically an Oprah Winfrey show of FREE UPGRADES FOR EVERYONE!!!!

That's the biggest reason why. I still lose more games then I win with 30K, but I can honestly say I've never not enjoyed a game I've played.

Fluff and epic battles. Best army list in the game allowing me to build my army any way I want and pretty much be useful. The non competitiveness of the games. Most players have embraced that 30k is about fun not winning.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

The army lists I use (Solar Auxilia and Questoris Knights) take the armies seriously, offer great list building options and visually both armies appeal to me a great deal as well.

It's like playing an older game of Warhammer 40,000. A time when list building was fun and fluffly, and there was balance in the game.

I have completely given up on 40k, no codicies or armies remain. Keeping up with the Jones's in formations and the next power codex grew old, fast. When Angron released I jumped into 30k purchasing, slowly building my World Eaters. A few years later I have two huge forces and am ordering my third.

Now because of the treachery of the Warmaster, thrice accursed Horus, we battled. No quarter was asked, no quarter was given. Hatred drove us. Hatred and fear. Aye, fear. For we were the finest warriors in the universe, elite among elites, the chosen of humanity. Once we had acknowledged no foe as our equal. Now we must- for were not these men the same as ourselves? Spawned from geneseed, trained by masters, armed and equipped with the best from humanity's realm. Finally we faced a foe worthy of fear, a mirror image ourselves and all we believed in. BALANCE, BALANCE, and more BALANCE. The game is similar to what 40k used to be and should still be. Not to mention it is marine chapter heavy (you betcha, I'm a fan of power armor), and the fluff is great. I started with 40k and love the lore, but the HH books are far better imho.

So basically 40k has lost it's way, has CRAP formations, is more expensive (due to formations), MASSIVE balance issues, etc.

HH is the total package with everything a 40k player wants (balance, fluff, cool models, smooth gameplay... everything except for xeno armies).

The rules. I like RoWs much more than the alternative CAD/Formation combinations that are Tau, Eldar, SMs, and Necrons. There are more balanced combinations that can be played, and fluff and competitiveness meshes so much better.

I can't wait until 30k Orks (with say the Beast instead of a Primarch), Eldar, or any of the other factions are brought out.

bah. there's a lot of calth, but as people continue to grow, it should be less calth, more variety. hopefully the rumors of the next calth box having MK III in it will add some variety.

Game balance. I have hundreds of imperial guard, blood angels, Inquisition minis and a couple of knights. For 40k they all collect dust. If I want to play competitively I can use maybe 5% of my blood angels to build one very specific counts-as Raven guard force. That's insane. Some how the 10,000+ points worth of figures over FOUR different armies that I've lovingly collected over two decades are rendered obsolete by bad rule writing.
In 30k, I'd say 75% of these figs are usable. I've gone back to painting, list making, and gaming at my flgs for the first time in over a year. In short, I'm enjoying the hobby again. Thanks forge world!

I have 3 40k Armies (BA/Orks/Daemons).

Started up with 30k for a few reasons , my mate who I play against the most did. It seemed more balanced than 40k and seemed like I could actually take stuff I thought was cool without completely hindering myself.

Also It might be enough to motivate me to read the HH novels - nealry finished the first one but I pretty much only read on planes atm.

This is the kind of response I was hoping for

here is mine...

I saw with eyes then young, and this is my testament. I was there when Tallarn burned and Keoptis drowned in oceans of blood. I witnessed the skies of Terra riven with lightning and shadow on the day the Warmaster came and hell followed with him. I heard the funeral bell toll for the Emperor of Humanity and wept.

I remember.

The Black Library HH books are very entertaining. There are only a few duds.

The Forge World HH books are full of HH era stories, and I can spend hours reading through them.

At narrative HH events, I get to play my fluffy army against like-minded players.

Everyone has their own reason to play. While I certainly don't feel this is an acceptable reason to quit the game, it is for him. Given it's a hobby of choice, best to just respect it.

A little understanding could go a long way though. Maybe people don't have bucket loads of money and want to dip their toes with B@C before sinking hundreds into the forge world black hole.

My army is pretty much made of guys carrying shields, but I'm fortunate that I can afford to do that. Many players will develop their own army's theme and flavour over time.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

I start 30k because I love the HH novel from Black Library. After thinking really hard, I decided to start with Night Lords and since I am a lover of the World Bearer, I am pretty sure I will have some of them (Gal Vorbak) in no time.

And yes I start with B@C, but it doesn't stop me from buying Night Raptor, Breachers, Volkite charger... and so on. And to be honest, I prefer to invest money in the models I like and B@C allow It. Less money and the body, more on the weapon

I kept saying "I only want to play classic 40k. Single FOC, no allies." The only games I played in 2015 were the Adepticon classic 40k tournament and the 40k Friendly. There might have been one small local tournament over the summer, I don't remember.

Anyway, at Adepticon '15 someone just told me "so play 30k if you just want standard FOC games." I went over to the FW booth to buy the book and they were sold out. Oh well, I wasn't all that excited about 30k anyway.

I went back later to impulse-buy a Deredeo that I was planning to use in 40k and FW had 1 copy of each red book that someone had returned minutes earlier. I said "well, gak, must be fate" and bought them.

About a year after that all the guys I used to play 40k with noticed the Calth box and I said something like "just dust off your old marine army. We can play 30k pretty much immediately. I have the books." We put in a ~$700 forge world order not long after that game...
