Hi there,
I see lots of people speaking about this supplement, sometimes desesperating about their loss of AA (Blood Angels, for example).
I'm a bit surprised, as I thought nobody would buy this (how many €/$/£ for an update to the rules ?!)
So, personally I don't plan,to get it, even in the future (I have to confess that I don't go to tournament, where, I guess, it could become compulsory).
What about you ?

I love my flyers as they are the most fun units in my codex, for that reason I'll get the book as soon as possible (got the digital version it's absolutely broken for me)

Expensive partial update to a rules set that will be made obsolete when 8th edition drops or some other partial update is released. It's a money sink with no actual benefit.

I already got it. I was curious to see how it all worked. It actually looks like a fun rule set. I was very much on the fence about it before now.
The iPad version is nearly half the cost of the print version, so it's hardly a money sink for me.

My problem with GW supplements is that they either get abandoned (cities of death, planetstrike) or get rolled into the main rule book in the next edition (escalation, stronghold assault). So at this point might as well wait.

What platform have you got it on? I've had trouble with digital editions in the past, and apple refunded the cost, the gave me the relevant codex for free once the problem was fixed. Try contacting your provider, or even GW customer services. They are usually pretty good with this kind of thing.

Never gonna buy it. I'm waiting for 8E to (possibly) release it as part of the main rules. That will finally kick me out of 40k permanently.

I was pretty sure the rules were entirely optional. Can anyone with the book confirm this or are we just making assumptions on what it does.

Everything in the game is essentially optional.
Books outside of core rulebooks and codexes certainly are. Anyone who says different is simply offering their opinion, no matter how forcefully.

pg 58
Burning Skies provides updated rule for Flyers in games of Warhammer 40,000,. These expand upon those from the rulebook allowing you to use special Attack Patterns, to take part in vicious dogfights, to field ace pilots and to fight thrilling Air War missions. This first section of the Burning Skies rules presents the expanded rules for Flyers, which replace those from Warhammer 40,000: The Rules.
and later ( pg 104)
The datasheets and Formations on the following pages allow you to field Flyers as individual models, or in Flyer wings of 2 to 4 model. The Datasheets replace those found in the models' respective codexes. Remember the flyers in a Wing must all be chosen from the same datasheet or be part of the same Formation. Flyer Wings chosen from datasheets will therefore have the same sort of model (though they may have different upgrades), while Flyer Wings that are from a Formation may include several different types of Flyer in the same Wing.

Yeah, people are taking "replace" to mean "you must use these" instead of "if using this supplement, these rules replace those" which is more to the point.
Or are people now claiming it is impossible to play 40K without this book somehow?
Death From The Skies came out before, didn't buy it then, managed just fine. This is just a 2nd Edition.

As Azreal says, everything in the game is optional. It says as much in the BRB when it talks about agreeing the type of game you will play with your opponent.

I might get it. It's entirely possible that I have the most aircraft in my group. so I doubt the rest of the group is concerned with it.
We have no plans to move on to an 8th edition. So having this supplement might be a good Idea.

I have one flyer, which is a Dark Talon which I have mostly because I like the model, it's not especially powerful on the table anyway. Either way Death from the Skies does nothing for me, as I never really felt that high speed flyers make a lot of sense anyway unless you're playing much larger games on a bigger than normal board, plus they have a different set of specialised units for dealing with them for the most part, which is annoying as taking too much AA (which is taking anything at all if your opponent has no flyers) means wasted points, whereas at least when you take too much anti-tank or anti-infantry, it's not as if those weapons can't still inflict damage.
That said I quite like the Storm Talon and Storm Raven models (with some tweaking), but neither is a high priority for me, and again I'm not that fussy about using them in games. In fact I'd expect to use a Storm Raven more for narrative purposes than anything else.
So yeah, Flyer supplement isn't much use to me.

After much deliberation I picked up the book. I have to admit, I have buyers remorse.
The Agility and corresponding Break Turn rules are nice, but the Pursuit rule is just completely stupid.
I was hoping for some nice formations and was hopeful that the Air Superiority Detachment would have promise, but it's all chaff.

It's laughable garbage and as others have stated these kinds of expansions get lost and forgotten in the shuffle very fast only for the worst components to be forced into the next version of the game. I'm done fitting the bill for GW's "finding themselves" phase of rules writing.

Got the last one, will try this too. Lot of folks in my group run flyers, it'll be cool to have them do SOMETHING without waiting for reserve rolls.
Then again we have a yearly apocalypse battle, play games from the battle missions books, and have had a lot of planet strike and cities of death games. Spice of life and all
