I hope this version makes it to US theaters (will be in French ones next month) - unfortunately the trailer itself is garbage but the transfer looks beautiful.

One of my favorite movies ever. I'd love to see a remaster but I wonder about diminishing returns: while it's not a perfect equivalent, I think once you hit about 720p in resolution you've more or less squeezed as much as you can get out of 35mm film so going past blu-ray into 4k seems like you wouldn't get a better picture. Of course, I assume there is more to the remaster than that, lots of just cleaning up and such.
I would definitely see this in theaters again. I'm simultaneously annoyed with theaters around here for the now relatively common cash grab of running old movies for current ticket prices, or near enough, and myself, for going to see them - but ultimately I find it very hard to say no to Ghostbusters or Aliens or Halloween or what have you in the theater.

I'm not sure about that. A 35mm frame has a massive amount of information on it (roughly 8k worth). Of course having something to project these images to their fullest extent has never been possible, and I don't think is even today. (Nobody makes an 8k projector/tv, do they?)
I feel so lucky to have had the chance to watch Jurassic Park on the big screen a few years back - to a kid, that film was the purest cinematic magic possible. I got to see Ghostbusters on the big screen for the first time a year or two before that ... another great experience. Predator is likewise in my Top 10 so I would gladly shell out the 20 bucks to see a clean transfer in the theater.

As my moniker will attest, I may have seen this movie once or twice. Big screen? I honestly might ruin my pants in some way, couldn't tell you which yet
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, Manchu why do you think the trailer was bad? It was basically a greatest hits compilation.
Oh man to see that roar on an IMAX. feth ME that would be awesome

It plays like someone was trying to use Predator footage to spoof a Wes Anderson trailer. The fact that it isn't a joke, that it is so tone deaf after the halfway point, makes me wonder if who ever prepared it even saw the film.
I think we may like Predator differently. But the real point is, we both like Predator.
Either way I'm just so giddy at the prospect of seeing it on the big screen.
Seeing velociraptors on IMAX and not being 7 was just so awesome for me, and Predator being hands-down my favorite movie with Jurassic Park as number two on that list, ugh, just so much happiness.
Yeah, the trailer doesn't really make sense, it kinda assumes you know what Predator is all about and spoilers the creature, level of action and plot somewhat.
A little bit of the lead up as to why they are there, where they are, killing some terrorists and then a something goes wrong moment with some hints to the predator would have been a bit more tense and nicer imo.
Oli: Can I be an orc?
Everyone: No.
Oli: But it fits through the doors, Look!
Yes - the magic of the movie is the sharp turn away from standard action fare to sci fi horror. And contrary to the gauche editing of the trailer, there isn't a shred of irony or self-awareness in the movie (part of why it is especially refreshing today).
To the Trailer. One thing to remember is that this is a FRENCH trailer. We all know that movies have different trailers depending on the region and the culture, so while to americans this might not tickle them, to the french it might.
As to it coming to US. i hope so. Predator is a movie I have seen every seen to, but not all the way through from start to finish. so im excited.
Erm I don't think so. While i agree that regions, cultures, individuals have differing tastes, this is just a bad trailer.
Culturally the French aren't THAT different to US or UK.
Any French Nationals want to pitch in?

The two "old" movies I have watched again as an adult were Jurassic Park and The Lion King, and I enjoyed both of those.
Meh I will pass this one up, did not like the first one to any extent and this is just a old and bad film given a new wrapping. But if they where to totally remake it and make it even a bit more believable, and set it in a different part of the world I would probably watch it out of curiosity

A realistic take on a '80s bulging biceps action hero film with invisible aliens? Sure, why not.
Personally, I've always wanted to see a Caddyshack remake that's a serious, more thoughtful exploration of the socio-economic class warfare themes in the original.

Seeing how some fail to see what I meant I will clarify for you. Drop the steroid infused bumbeling dudes, remake the Predator and set in the likes of Syria or heck, the Balkans during the war there in the 1990ish
Think up another monster and that movie is all yours! I'd love to see it someday but it will be a totally different beast.
Predator is all about those things and should stay that way.

Sounds like a completely different movie to me.
I'd probably watch it! Heck, if you kept the Predator itself and made it a kinda-sorta-sequel like Predators, I'd definitely watch it.
But don't remake Predator and change that much. It's very much an eighties movie and very much needs eighties over-the-topness.

Well there is some divided opinion this I suppose, and yes. I am well aware of the fact that it is a product of that decade

You don't think the South American jungle setting was realistic in the background of the Iran-Contra covert operation by the Reagan government?
Thinking at this point that Trondheim's comments in this thread should warrant a 1 month ban, at the very least

Again - definitely!
Read about the making of Predator (there is a doc on some of the special edition home releases, or Arnie's biography) and it's pretty entertaining stuff.
Definitely a product of the time, wouldn't have it any other way.

I should have learened long ago that trying to argue with the mob on Dakka is like shouting at the wind. Forgive me but I never started that the jungel was a bad setting, but I would prefer a different setting

Sorry Trondheim, that was a joke (I thought obvious.. but obviously not!)
I always find it kind of amusing that people will more readily accept "I don't believe in God" more than "I don't like Predator" or "I don't like the Beatles" etc.
In many ways Predators is the modern equivalent of the original. Not so much the setting, but the predator film +20 years. Bit more gritty, less sense of humour, nonetheless some pretty cool elements to it. And very well thought out (aside from how Laurence Fishburne appeared to be so well fed while hiding out in a hostile alien environment). I read that the director wanted Alien Brody to be how a modern soldier would look (very lean, practical muscle) to deliberately differentiate from the testosterone, oiled biceps of the original .

The former is a complex topic inextricably bound up with a person's most intimate and profund reflections ... while the latter is, let's face it, a lot more clear-cut. I can understand not liking American action flicks of the '80s ... but singling out Predator for condemnation is baffling!

Older movies I saw at the Houston Museum of Natural Science's IMAX was The Godfather and Jaws. They weren't remastered that I'm aware. It was part of their Classics movie series they did one summer.
Good times.

Have you seen Predators, by chance? It's got a lot of similar elements but there is also a (generally) different setting. Also, Predator 2, but given some of the other reasons you didn't like Predator, I don't think you'd like Predator 2.
