Hi All,
So this is a Ghaz conversion I've been working on for some time now. I work in spurts and am incredibly slow at this, and sadly there is a bit more work to do before there is any paint on him. Pics are below, and for anybody who is interested I've broken down the "process" below...
INSPIRATION
This is the long section...
Basically this all starts with me not really caring for the
GW Ghaz model as an actual representation of Ghaz.
I think it's sick, but feels like what a mega-armoured Ork Warlord should look like; NOT the Prophet of the Waagh!. Ghaz is supposed to be the scariest evolution of Ork ever seen, and while the official model is fearsome, it doesn't look like something that makes someone think "We have no hope." I wanted to make a model that looked like it would make you feel devoid of hope.
I'll start with the "theme" I wanted it to have. I wanted him too look like the true embodiment of Gork and Mork, and I wanted that to be reflected visually throughout the model. This is all a result of the Krokmlek model because it can portray the metal skull but it's also split down the entire middle of the head, so I felt that there was an opportunity to do a whole "Two-Face" effect that fit perfectly with the lore.
I'll leave it to discussion as to which side represents the influence of which of the two gods (I never really decided myself), but to that end, his left side (the metal side of the head) was modeled to appear much more chaotic than his right. This was done primarily with Ork glyph-plates on the shoulder and leg armour that will be painted all kinds of colors. Also, the pieces used for the buzz saw on that same side are by their nature a bit more chaotic. Staying on the left side, his back (the "engine") is made up of much more dramatic, disjointed and cartoonish looking exhaust pipes. When all is said and done, there will be no doubt that his left side is the gak-show side.
The right side is simple. Much smoother, Spartan and practical. To me it looks like a bunch of looted pieces that were put back together with little to no trouble at all. The engine on the left side also has symmetry to it, and looks to be the most high-tech part of the model.
FRAME
Entire model is framed around a Deff Dredd. Both arms and legs are from the Deff Dredd, just heavily augmented, and the torso is the same but gutted and filled with pipes made of
GW bits and black paper clips. Then added the exhaust pipes and front armour plate from the Dakkajet kit.
I had originally settled on a much lamer head and neck set-up until my brother and friend both kept suggesting that it needed to be beefed up a bit. I then made the neck carapace from Ork Boyz shoulder pads, then figured I was good. Then after I had put the engine section together I got the idea for an awesome cluster of pipes and cables coming from the end of the carapace and into the engine. Aesthetically I love it, and it also makes him look like even though he is the biggest Ork bad-ass, it is taking EVERYTHING to hold him together.
LEFT ARM
This is really just all a bunch of various Ork buzz saw and klaw bits put together. Shoulder carapace is made up of the Deff Dredd shoulders.
RIGHT ARM
Leman Russ canons with a few augments to it. Top canon is connected by an Ork bit but I forget from what kit. Shoulder carapace is also Deff Dredd parts but the bottom piece is the front plate of the Deff Dredd that you put the horns onto.
LEGS
Deff Dredd legs. The right one I cut in half so I could extend it into a more full-standing position to give some sense of movement to him. Both legs have been augmented with a hacked-up version of one of the canon bits that comes with the Leman Russ kit. They have plates and glyphs from the Ork kits glued to them. Feet are just different claws from the Deff Dredd kit positioned to look like big metal talons. The hydraulics are poles from an old Warhammer Fantasy Empire kit, which electric tape at either end to help try and make them look like hydraulics. The knees are from the Warbikes kit.
BACK/ENGINE
This one I really struggled with for awhile and was pretty much the last thing I made as far as the key components to the model. And then I finis

[img]hed it and it changed the way I did the model's neck...which then changed how I did the right-side of the back. But I did start with the right side first. Per the theme, I knew I needed something that looked a little bit more practical and I ended up buying the engine/exhaust pieces from the Morkanaut on ebay. It gives the model a nice fin-looking set of exhaust pipes that cascade in a way that fits with the theme of the right part of the model. After I incorporated the tube system coming from the neck carapace I needed to beef up his right engine to keep the whole thing looking even, so I took some Imp. Guard bits that I think are supposed to be ammo cylinders and positioned and modeled them with green stuff pipes so that it looks like this crude but relatively well-made piece of Ork tech.
The left side is made up of just a bunch of exhaust pipes from different kits, most of which are from a Forge World Grot Tank that my brother got me for my birthday. I positioned them so that it looked like something out of "Roger Rabbit" or a cartoon and so that it would ascend into some silly-looking peak.
BASE
Just a bunch of stuff thrown together to look like scrap. Only thing of note is the Grot down below oiling Ghaz's legs as he walks. I thought the model and the idea of it looked funny, but it's also intended to be a nice callback to Makari from the 2nd Ed. model.
Enjoy the pics and thanks reading!!
