G'day...I keep thinking I should do project logs for some of my stuff, but so far I've never thought to until I was mostly done with the project ...this time though, I've remembered about it when it's still in the early stages, so I'm going to try to keep track of it here, hopefully it's not a disaster!

so, this is my entry for this month's "Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge", but I thought It'd be best to log it here, rather than spam up that thread

I've been tempted for a long time now to get myself some "Goff Rockers", because they are just fantastic and I love them ...and finally decided to stop putting it off and ordered them a couple of days ago - it will still take a week or two for them to get here, but I have plenty to work on in the meantime!

I've raided deep into my hoard of bitz, and started work on a drummer for the band (how could you have goff rock band without a drummer??) and a mobile stage/"tour van"!

The Drummer:
I decided to use an old "Warbuggy gunner" for him, as his character seems to work better with the old rockers than say, a current-model boy or something...he's using stikkbombs for drumsticks (because of course he is), and the drum kit consists of: a fuel drum cut in half, with old orc shields stuck on top...the cymbals are: some random vehicle hatch and maybe part of a tau drone(?), sitting on warbuggy gun mounts...and an ork glyph plate on, I think it's an old wagon wheel plate? for the centre...and all that's mounted on an old (deimos) rhino hatch, stuck down to a current rhino top-hatch as a platform.

The "Tour Van":
I found a really rough, old chimera I had lying around, and thought that would be a good flat base for a "mobile stage" kind of thing...I think it "looks" a lot worse than it is, a good paintjob should cover up it's current shameful state...anyway, I've made a start on it, using two more old deimos rhino hatches, and a current rhino top-hatch, and a little diamond-plate panel from the stompa kit as the base of the "stage", with a couple of imperial skull/speaker/light doohickeys from the bastion kit.

here's how it stands now...stil a lot of work left to go, lots of stuff to add, but all things have a beginning

uh, right, so...I might have gotten a bit carried away with the tour bus

...this can all still be instantly reversed (I just take the chimera off the back and it's back as it was)

anyone got any thoughts?...too big?...crappy toy truck stuff ruining it?

it's still got a lot of work left to go on it (actually, I think the speakers need to be moved around already), either way, but yeah, lemme know what you think

Big truck is fine, just needs to be more Orky. Lots of Orky panels, glyphs, random gak all over. Definitely do something with the wheels too - Orks don't know what tyres are

Speakers look great!

Are you planning on using this in a game? Might be too big for the board - but will looks awesome as a display piece.

oh I haven't even started "orking it up" yet, all that's still to come
...I'm now slightly concerned about the wheels though...hmm...maybe I could add some armour plates to them? like on the trukk/battlwagon?

and yeah, it is quite large ...maybe a battlewagon-and-a-half long?...so, it would either be just an extra-large battlewagon, or maybe a kustom battlefortress superheavy from imperial armour 8?...but it will be primarily for display anyway, I mean, it's to showcase the goff rockers, and they're "display only" type models themselves...

----------------------------------------

ok, so, I just typed the above, then before I clicked submit, I spotted a long-suffering, ancient leman russ, and decided to loot it:

I like where this is going, although I'm not sure but what the large toy truck is a bit big. Maybe just build a platform-thing on top of an actual Ork Battlewagon or something. Any way you end up going, it should be cool once it's properly Orkified!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):

ahh this is doing my head in

I know, really, that the truck is just too big to be reasonable in a game, even by ork standards...but then, I feel like the "old chimera with a load of stuff stuck to it" isn't quite big/impressive enough to be a suitable "mobile stage" for the goff rockers...

I *could* just use a battlewagon, but I wanted something a little less"straight out of the box"...I could make work though I think...last resort though

hmm...maybe I could bolt the front of one of those old-model ork trukks to the front of the chimera...might try that...

(yeah, this is not an ordered process at all ...kinda glad I'm logging it now, so I can look back and try to figure out what the heck I was doing/thinking )

------------------------------

ok, here's a more "sane" version, with the front-half of an old-model ork trukk bolted to the front of the chimera:

what looks best (bearing in mind all options still need a load of orky embellishment), the base chimera build?...the chimera+driver bolton?...or the big monster?....or should I just add the lot to my bitz hoard and pimp out a battlewagon?

I think you're on the right tracks with the chimera as the stage. But as you say, it then needs something more.

The trukk front on it certainly stops it just being a chimera with a flat top, but I like the big toy truck. Especially with the Russ as the rear tracks.

But it really depends on how much you want to use it. I'd totally play against it in all its glory - rule of cool - but others may be more hesitant.

Is it possible to make it modular and basically be able swap between big toy truck and little trukk front end?

Oh, and you said the Goff Rokkers are display only, but ages ago I got the old 'Ere We Go rules and tried updating them for 7th ed. Not tried them and didn't get much feedback but have a look - you might want to give them a try - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/669691.page

I basically figured you could remove a Rokker each time it loses a HP.

I think I could probably sort something out to have the front driver rig be detachable, so I can use the smaller option in games, and use the bigger option for display/as a superheavy "kustom battlefortress" option for big games...get the best of both worlds...yeah, I think that might be the way forward

huh...I think I might have actually read through that thread, but that was before I got around to making an account here, so I couldn't reply at the time...I do like the sound of those rules, they seem to fit fluff-wise...I do think it definitely needs to be mobile though

I was thinking of using this...thing...I'm building, as a "Mekboy Junka" from imperial armour VIII...it's basically a trukk, with a load of extra options...including "speshul gear" such as a "Junka force field generator" (models within 6" of the hull get 5+ cover), "Turret-mounted Junka Shokk Attack Gun" (just a vehicle-mounted shokk attack gun), "Turret-mounted Big Zzappa" (48", S 2D6, AP2, HeavyD3)...there's more options than that, but, I was thinking the rockers could possibly act as any one of those 3 options (for the ranged weapon options, I imagine they "turn it up to 11" )

That all sounds good! Looking forward to seeing how it all progresses. I like the idea of a vehicle mounted shokk attack gun! (Not familiar with the details of the imperial armour books).

I love Imperial Armour VIII...it has so much great ork stuff in it...superheavies, squiggoths, fliers, a wider variety of ground-vehicles, kustom stompa, zhadsnark da ripper (character biker warboss)...but a lot of it reads fairly outdated these days...forgeworld stopped selling it a year or two ago now, really hoping for an updated re-release!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok, so I think I've decided to go with the "sane" route - the big truck will be used for some other project down the line

I built some speaker boxes for it today, and I think that those, combined with the driver rig on the front, have bulked it up enough that I'm starting to be happy with the overall size of it.
...it's starting to feel big enough, but not overly big - the band will still be the main focus of the project, as they should be

I love that the Rokkers are still stamped as 1990, despite being a new purchase!

Have you thought about adding any lights to the stage?

oh yeah, there's definitely going to be some stage lights on there! ...I'm thinking something like 2-5 along the top of the billboard, maybe a couple down the front somewhere too...

I'm going to try to scrounge some IG tank searchlights off my brother over the weekend, that or maybe order some off ebay...I don't really like my odds at scratchbuilding decent-looking lights...

...or if you were talking about functional lights/LED's?, nope, sorry, I haven't learned how to mess with that kind of stuff yet, and I don't really have the time to at the moment, and don't have any of the parts...honestly, I think I'd rather have painted "model" lights anyway.

thanks for the comments in this thread so far guys, it's been great for the ol' motivation

@ZergSmasher - yeah, naturally there's at least a small part of inspiration from the Fury Road doof wagon, though I've had various ideas rattling around for the rockerz well before I saw that...hard to say now if I would've come up with something like this without seeing fury road or not...I s'pose, there's at least a bit of credit due there I guess...I do love everything about that movie and have watched it many times...and I might have painted a 30-mob of boyz wearing black, with super-pale skin last year

while I'm here typing, given that this is my first attempt at actually keeping a log of one of my projects, I'm still kinda getting used to how to go about it all...I find it hard to judge what amount of progress is worth making a post about...
ok, so, I'm going into the painting phase now...should I basically just make a post when I'm done painting each day? or something more like stage updates ("basecoats done", "highlights done", "details done", "weathering done")? or...?
also, which would you guys like to see painted first? the rockerz, or the wagon?

ok, that's about enough of that...anyway, this isn't much of an update honestly...I've been busy since my last post, and I've only just got some primer on it...but I thought I'd post a couple of pics anyway, because I don't know about you guys, but man I love how a simple coat of primer transforms a mess of several different coloured plastics, metal, badly painted parts, etc, into something that actually resembles a cohesive model ...just a good coat of vallejo black primer, followed by a bit of a zenith highlight using vallejo white primer, mostly just to make it easier for me to see what/where everything is, and also so I'm not painting over straight black
(oh, btw, the rockerz are just temporarily on those bases, so they'll be easier to paint...when they're done, I'll snap them off and glue them to the wagon )

hey guys, I've been getting stuck into the wagon!...I'm about halfway through now I think, still needs a few little things basecoated, and a full sweep of highlights, washes, detailing and weathering, but if I do say so myself, I think it's working out fairly well ...thought it'd be a good spot to take a break and post an update anyway, so here's a couple of pics

Cool build, the wagon is looking suitably 'metal'. It's not often you see these models out "in the wild", so it'll be good to see the Akka-Dakka boyz fully painted.

I realy like the Idea of that stage. And I think you made the right choice by dropping the big truck. This looks great with the proportions of Band, Stage and Size of the complete model.

Just a couple of thoughts:
It is a shame that yu did not take of the old paint completly, that takes away a bit of its glory. And maybe you can still cover the holes of the sides of the misslelaunchers, that small detail would make a big enhancement. And a smaler little point - your speakers have no frontboard for the box. This would make the sound better , but more importantly you have rivets on the outside, with nothing on the inside, I know, a really small detail, but you did ask for opinions and ideas.

That said, I love that model!!!

hahaha...I think you've managed to notice all the things that have been annoying me about the build!

The old paint: ok, I left that on for a couple of reasons, firstly, ok, I was lazy and impatient, and just wanted to start building it ...secondly, I didn't have anything to strip the paint off - I have actually ordered some isopropyl alcohol now though, should be here around the end of the week, but that's too late for this project ...and thirdly, I actually kinda wanted the small patches of texture scattered around the model that were caused by the thick old paint, and glue...it will make for a good base for some weathering effects when it's done

The holes in the sides of the missile launchers: yeah, that was purely an oversight, I just stuck them on without thinking too much, I thought just painting them would work well enough, but I think you're right, I might have to add small glyph-plates over the holes or something, they have been annoying me.

The speaker boxes: there actually is a frontboard...it's just set too far back inside the box...kinda half-way...that was caused by me roughly measuring and cutting holes for the speakers, and then super-gluing the frontboard to/around the speakers without properly dry-fitting it first - I didn't make the holes big enough to fit any more towards the front, and by the time I had properly realised the problem, the superglue was stuck really well! ...the rivets though...oh shhh! if the orks think they help hold it together, then they help hold it together, it's fiiiine

...so, the old paint is "weathering", the holes in the launchers will be fixed, and the speakerboxes are probably stuck the way they are, but I'll see if I can do anything about it...

it's been a couple of days, time for a small update...

I'm going 90's on these dudes even down to the paint! their skin got a coat of some ancient "orc flesh wash" I had stashed away, the black leather parts got a coat of equally ancient chaos black (odd paint, it's actually really glossy), and the silver bits got a coat of, again, equally ancient mithril silver (and darkened down with a wash of thinned chaos black)...that's all I've done to those boys so far though, plenty left to do...

as for the wagon, that got a couple of liberal all-over beatings with my homebrew rust wash, then a bit of a leadbelcher drybrush over all the metal just to bring it back to life a bit - I want it to look rusty, but still functional...also, I added some small glyph-plates to cover the holes in the sides of the rokkit launchers ...think that's all I've done today, it still needs some more detailing and finishing touches here and there, probably a bit of dirt and chipping too, but it's getting there

anyway, here's some pics...
