A knife-wielding man in a private security uniform who injured eight people at a mall in central Minnesota Saturday evening asked at least one victim whether they were Muslim and referenced Allah during the assault, authorities said Wednesday.

St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson said the suspect, whom he did not identify, was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer from another jurisdiction. All but one of the eight victims had been treated and released from a local hospital and all were expected to survive their injuries.

Police responded to reports of several stabbings at the Crossroads Mall at around 8:30 p.m. local time. Witnesses also reported hearing gunshots at the scene.

Anderson declined to call the attacks an act of terrorism, saying the suspect's motive isn't known yet. "We will be diligent and get to the bottom of this," Anderson said. "Starting tomorrow, things won't be the same here."

Local police had three previous encounters with the suspect, most for minor traffic violations, Anderson said, adding that the FBI had offered to help with the investigation.

The suspect did, but that's one police killing I doubt people will have a problem with. Sounds like that off-duty officer was really on point, good for him.

Somewhere in south-central England.

This is the face of terrorism in the 21st century.

It wasn't discussed on DakkaDakka, but a couple of weeks ago a British woman was stabbed to death by a French Islamic man in Australia, who ascribed his motive to ISIL etc. He also stabbed another man who tried to intervene, and this victim has also died.

We are in an era of terrorism in which individuals can be motivated by fairly vague causes to attack "class enemies" practically at random.

I do not intend to suggest that Islam is inherently a violent religion or specifically anti-western. The overwhelming majority of the billion+ Muslims around the world are peaceful ordinary people like you and me.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I think they kind of try to keep the word terrorism for more organised attacks though, however I also think you could class sporadic attacks like this one as the same due to their base with ideology and such.

No religion is immune to having its message of peace perverted into one of violence, sadly.
I believe George Carlin said it best when he revised "Thou Shalt Not Kill" into the version that is actually practiced "Thou shalt try real hard not to kill anyone, unless, of course, they pray to a different invisible man than the one you pray to."

Post says St Paul, and as of last night/early morning I was right near there! Had dinner at the mall of America down the road. I think I passed signs for crossroads mall as I was rolling through. Damn.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

It was in St. Cloud, about 65 miles northwest of Minneapolis/St Paul.

Its to cause terror. They want you to fear shopping, fear living, they want you to surrender to fear.

Its all about fear.
Fear to oppose them, fear to stand against them.

The bombs if ny them are so your scared to go into a city, scared of crowds. Hurts economy, hurts morale, hurts a countries very confidence in its self.

Exalted

People are right that religion can be interpreted in a violent manner, it's just not the interpretation of what most people who follow that religion have. The problem lies in religion being the easiest label to give to a terrorist attack to increase fear and suspicion, instead of calling these people out as mentals and leaving it at that.

The thing that people don't understand is how publishing these attacks does everything the attacker wanted. It draws maximum attention, gets hundreds of thousands of people angry and upset, and adds more unjust shade on religious groups who then end up getting harassed in their day to day lives because of it. The best thing to do is to only publish news like this to the local area and deny the attackers the opportunity of becoming an antihero, like so many who have committed school shootings in America have.

St. Cloud is just about an hour from Minneapolis. And that's significant because that's a city that has the largest Somali population in the United States, and has been a real focus of Federal law enforcement because it is a known hot bed for terrorist recruiters. And tensions have been running high since the FBI conducted several raids last year.

Gotta get that scare in.

Good point.

To the topic CNN broadcast a gathering of Somali civic and Islamic leaders decrying the attacks, showing sympathy for the victims, and reminding people many had left Somalia to avoid religious pyschos attacking them there.

How's so? Don't know Jainism but from wiki:

The central tenet is non-violence and love towards all living beings. Parasparopagraho Jivanam ("the function of souls is to help one another") is the motto of Jainism. The three main principles of Jainism are ahimsa (non-violence), anekantavada (non-absolutism), and aparigraha (non-possessiveness)

Okay so if that's it...Buddhism has same core yet there's been Buddhist warrior monks who fight and kill.

What difference Jainism then has?

Me? No.
But as long as there are people who are willing to allow other people to control their religious beliefs/actions, then there will be people who will take advantage of that.

Violence is strictly forbidden in buddhism which considers everybody to be reflection of same root(like islands that extends to continent below and are connected by it). Yet that hasn't stopped there being people who claim to be buddhist and kill. Like isis menbers claim to follow islam despite going against it.

Still don't see what makes jainism immune for it. Just cause set of ethics claims no violence doesn't mean it is so. Depends on person

The warrior monks are self defense and martial discipline.
Control, practice, training.

There not violent thugs spoiling for a fight

Agreed-just look at Zen buddhists, which the Samurai crrupted for their personal faith. However Jainism are an extreme group. They are incredibly interesting. I would suggest you research them- its very enlightening ( and I mean that in the best possible way. I have great respect for their faith).

They fought and killed for power and wealth. In buddhism simple violence is forbidden never mind killing. Killing is the worst thing buddhist can do.

Still nobody has proven why jainism is special and immune for people utilizing it for own benefits

(CNN)The man who stabbed nine people at a Minnesota mall before an off-duty police officer fatally shot him has been identified as 22-year-old Dahir A. Adan, federal law enforcement sources and two Somali community leaders who are in contact with Adan's family said Monday.
Adan went to college in St. Cloud and worked for a private security firm at the time of the attack, the community leaders told CNN. He had been acting strangely before the attack, they said.

I'm just as comfortable with my seven shot Government Model as I am with my 15+1 10mm Glock or 9mm Beretta. The "failure to stop drill" (aka "Mozambique Drill") can be your best friend in a failure to stop situation with a lower capacity handgun.

Part of the reason I bought 9mm. Hollow points from a 9mm have negligible difference in wound cavity size from a .45, but it can carry a lot more rounds.
