Multiple people shot at Ft. Lauderdale airport

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say multiple people have died after a lone suspect opened fire at the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, international airport.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office tweeted the information following Friday afternoon's shooting.

Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief told CNN that authorities "have an active crime scene investigation involving terminal 2."

Miami area television stations reported that at least six people were shot. News stations showed video of medics taking care of a bleeding victim outside the airport. News helicopters hovering over the scene showed hundreds of people standing on the tarmac as an ambulance drove by and numerous law enforcement officers, including tactical units, rushed to the scene.

Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer tweeted that he was at the airport when shots were fired and "everyone is running."

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Three people dead, and nine wounded.

This was in the baggage claim areas (outside of the security checkpoint most likely).

Either this is someone going postal in work related issue or another lone wolf terrorism.

Dunno yet. Most likely one of those 2.

The baggage claim area is a "soft" area with a lot of people that you don't need to pass through security to reach.

It's over 200 miles from the Amish community in Florida to Fort Lauderdale. That's an awful long way to go by horse drawn cart.

NBC News: Multiple senior law enforcement sources say Esteban Santiago born 3/1990 is in custody. Had military ID on him. Born in NJ.

At least he didn't go for the line into the security gate. There could be a hundred people densely packed just inside the airport doors in those lines.

Seems it was his gun he had checked in his luggage. Got his bags, went to the restroom, locked and loaded.

CNN is saying: "The suspect flew to Florida from Alaska, the sources said. When he arrived at the airport, he retrieved his bag at baggage claim, he took out the gun and started firing, the sources said. One source said he went to the bathroom to get the gun out of his luggage and emerged firing."

So...you fly from Alaska to Florida...just for the sole purpose of shooting up the baggage claim?

Really guy?

Not to take away from the seriousness of the issue, but that sounds like the mass shooting equivalent of a rube-goldberg device...

Impulse decision by someone who was already on the trip and decided to do it halfway there? Received bad news on the flight? Or was the choice of target a personal thing? It doesn't make sense if the goal is just to kill a bunch of people, but there could be reasons.

True, though most people dont normally have a firearm with them, that takes a bit of preplanning, anything is possible I guess.

If you check your bags you can carry a weapon and ammunition in them? I've never needed to fly with a firearm so I am surprised by this, frankly.

It's Alaska, aren't gun ownership rates rather high there? The gun seems to have been checked in his baggage normally, so all it takes is someone who normally carries a concealed handgun deciding to take it with them when they travel. That's a pretty standard thing to do.

What's so surprising? Checked bags are the ones carried in the cargo hold, they're inaccessible to the owner while they're in secure areas. The only places where the owner would have access to their weapon are the unsecured areas where someone with a gun could walk in the door and start shooting. So why wouldn't you be able to travel with a gun in your checked bags?

Though true most people don't travel with a gun in checked luggage, there are plenty who do so. It is legal. You just have to abide by the TSA rules on locks and stuff.

The airlines generally require you to have the weapon locked away in an airline approved case. The ammo has to be secured separately from the weapon. And they have to be declared when having your bags checked.

It's in violation of Federal law to have a weapon, loaded or otherwise, on your person on a commercial flight. And the checked weapons/ammo cannot be on your person when on the flight. They have to be transported in the baggage hold/compartment/cargo bay during the flight.

I am not surprised you can check a weapon. I am surprised you can check a weapon AND ammo in the same bag. My surprise is based on what is possible when you allow someone to carry both elements on them. You get this situation where someone can easily begin popping off rounds in an airport.

Perhaps it is the Californian in me that has to carry ammo in my vehicle in a separate and secure location from the firearm I am also carrying in the same vehicle. Keeping both items in the same bag in an airport seems like a bad idea. Hence my surprise. Sorry if that bothered you.

Yup. Lots of people in the US do this every day when travelling. If you've been on a plane in the US there's probably been guns in the cargo hold. Could be for attending training/competition, commercial reasons or someone who wants to take their concealed carry gun with them on their trip.

Has there been confirmation he had them in the same bag?

Again, it is the gun and ammunition traveling together that surprised me. My surprise wasn't that guns can be checked on a flight.

Most of your firearms transported by commercial airlines tend to be long guns, and usually by people on hunting trips. Especially when flying to Canada, where it's illegal to bring handguns into the country from the United States.

So, bags. Plural. Either way, I am still surprised that the components for a shooting can be carried by a passenger relatively easily.

Frankly, it is easier to drive up to the airport locked and loaded and walk into the baggage claim area and open fire. Two different bags for the guy flying makes zero difference to the likelihood of this happening.

But the point is it makes no difference. If you can't carry them in the same bag you can just go out to your car, retrieve whichever one you don't have in your bag, and come back inside to kill people. Preventing people from carrying a gun and ammo together doesn't accomplish anything when there's no control at all on carrying both up until you place the bag on the check-in desk. And, as I mentioned, once you're in the secure part of the airport where some random person (who doesn't even have to have a ticket) can't walk in with a loaded gun and shoot people you don't have any access to your checked bags.
