Given how well received the idea was in the showcase forum, and since I have always been fond of the idea of spending a great deal of time and effort creating a unique, homebrewed Space Marine Chapter, I have decided to start a blog documenting my very gradual progress forging the Space Rhinos (also Rhinocerotidae Astra, The Rhinos).
Over the past two years or so I have written quite a bit of lore on the Rhinos (http://warhammer40kfanon.wikia.com/wiki/The_Rhinos) and I have to say, I am rather fond of how they have taken shape (Rhinos being a fairly strange choice of animal for chapter heraldry I am a little surprised how much they have grown on me).

In any case, so far I have completed the Chapter Master, Akachi Masego, and have started work on the Chapter's Icon Bearer, Ranako Wekesa. This project will be slow going and updates will not be regular - I am already working on my Death Guard and have a very busy job. It is probable that for a long time I will only add one or two models at a time to the blog, focusing on the flavour and quality of the model rather than dropping whole squads simultaneously. I may even name each of the models I upload for good measure, just to keep expanding the lore I have written for the Rhinos.

Anyway, that's my spiel. I hope you enjoy what I have so far. The next updates will be progress photos of Ranako Wekesa, I intend to spend a long time freehanding his banner. With any luck I can balance the gothic artwork of 40k with the unique flavour of the Rhinos.

Awesome. I'll be keeping an eye on this to see how it develops, but so far it's looking great.

Update #1
I found some time to sit down and paint this evening (I get Tuesdays 'off'... I say 'off' - I still have to work, just at home). Managed to get some of Ranako Wekesa painted up (his chainsword, tabard, cloak, part of his helmet).
I will probably do the banner last. First I will paint up his armour, body, the banner pole, etc. Then I'll give it a nice solid coat of Army Painter Anti-Shine Varnish and then I'll start working on the banner artwork. I'm thinking of having a sort of roaring Rhino (think the Reek from Star Wars Ep. 2 but without the sideburn horns) and then the typical gothic bells and whistles (gothic writing, furled banners, etc.)

Soon...
He's painted to a standard I'm happy with and is now all varnished to protect what I have so far. Now I just gotta hope it wasn't all for nothing and I can get this banner to look... decent.

Then suddenly I saw it. With only a slight churning to mark its rise to the surface, the thing slid into view above the dark waters. Vast, Polyphemus-like, and loathsome, it darted like a stupendous monster of nightmares to the monolith, about which it flung its gigantic scaly arms, the while it bowed its hideous head and gave vent to certain measured sounds. I think I went mad then.

Update #3
So, the freehand banner ain't great but it's passable until I improve a bit more at freehand work (and the beauty is I can just add detail gradually as I improve). But for now this will do as is.

At the minute I'm planning to assemble a Kill Team (which obviously won't include the Chapter Master).
So I'm going to assemble 5 Veterans (Bannerman, Company Champion and 3 Chainsword/Bolt Pistoleers along with a Razorback).
Then from there I'll hopefully start making my way toward a full army. I expect the first thing I'll do after the Kill Team are Assault Terminators.

"Isn't great" yet it gives me self esteem issues about my own freehand work. (That's a joke btw, I just think it's really good.)

Fair point I made a few little changes to some of the lines which were out of place (I think they were making me think it looked worse than it actually does - since the changes are very minor I won't bother uploading again, not until I get my next additions painted).

Speaking of which:

Awesome work, those are some cool conversions. Will every Marine have horns of some sort, or is that just for the Veterans and commanders ect?

Great fluff and a very nice colour scheme - very military/utilitarian and befitting the chapter's namesake.

Thanks folks!

@Paradigm I will probably give horns to Veterans/Sergeants/etc. - anyone who typically suffers from no-helmet syndrome (which I have never been fond of) will instead get Rhino horns.
That said, it is tempting to give everyone Rhino horns - it would be pretty easy, this will be a pretty slow moving army project (by which I mean I am probably going to build it unit by unit rather than buy a ton of minis and build/paint them all).

No update on the Rhinos today, I got distracted painting this guy (sort-of-related-but-not-a-Rhino):

Those are great marines. I like the color scheme. I have to say that the M6 Corvus "Beakies" helmets are perfect for the rhino motif. Pretty cool idea you have here.

I love how you said the banner is "not so good" when it's 100× better than anything I can do

TheEyeOfNight- I swear, this thread is 70% smack talk, 20% RP organization, and 10% butt jokes
TheEyeOfNight- "Ordo Xenos reports that the Necrons have attained democracy, kamikaze tendencies, and nuclear fission. It's all tits up, sir."
Space Marine flyers are shaped for the greatest possible air resistance so that the air may never defeat the SPACE MARINES!
