Please read before voting.

One thing that has heavily irked me about 40k is the pronunciation of the "Ty" in "Tyranids".

The common pronunciation is "Tee". I much prefer "Tye" though.

"Tee" sounds so flimsy and weak to me. "Tye" sounds so much bolder, stronger and menacing. Much more suited to the Tyranids IMHO.

So come all Tye and Tee lovers and vote!

EDIT: Some of you are saying "Tier" instead of "Tee", if so, Tier or Tye?

How about the pronunciation Teir-AH-nids. That is how I have always said it and how I have always heard it said.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

In all honesty it should be Tie-ran-ids because they're just named after the planet tyran where first (recorded) contact was made. Still gonna call the tee-nids though.

This one.

Anytime a member of the studio has used the word, it's been Tir-a-nids, to rhyme with Pyramid,

The Rogue Trader Tyranids looked like six legged Tyranonsaurs. Hence (Tyran)t L(i)zar(ds) =Tyranids.

Should be pronounced Tie-ranids, like Tyrant. Commonly pronounced "Tier-anids," like Tyranny.

Dawn of War always seems to say it was "Tier-AH-nids" and, as others have pointed out, GW says "Tier" instead of "Tee" or "Tie".

Pretty sure it's "Tier".

Do you think Tye-ranids sounds better though?

Neither one?

Best pronunciation I've heard would probably be "Tihr", which is pronounced similar to the first syllable of mirror or pyramids in most dialects of English.

The pronunciation of words in the English language always seems to evolve towards the easiest or clearest pronunciation over time. Even if they were Tie-ranids when first named, it's been most of a millennium since then. Just call them Tihr-anids like everyone else does so they know what you're talking about.

I don't see how "Tie" is less clear or less easy than "Tihr".

Try saying Tie-ranids several times quickly and then try saying Tihr-anids several times quickly. Unless you have a very different dialect than mine, the latter rolls off the tongue smoother and quicker. I'm not a linguistics guy, but it feels to me like the mouth has to change shape farther in Tie-ranids than it does flowing between syllables in Tihr-anids.

That was my original point though. Since it is less smooth, it sounds "stronger"

It's not being pronunced "tee".

There's a distinct and notable difference between "tee" and "tihr".

Or do you pronounce pyramid "peeramid"?

Honestly, "tie"ranid just sounds lame to me, not "strong".

Pretty much this.

Also, Our lord and saviour over at Warhammer TV pronounces it as "Tihr-ah-nids", and all units in DOW2 that interact with Tyranid presences on the battlefield, or who mention them in the story, also pronounce it that way.

Just clearing up any debate over "which is right" if we're still doing that.
