Has something changed about Youtube. Several of my favorite channels are switching to Patreon.

Youtube pays you based on ads, but most everyone's got some form of ad blocker now. Patreon's paywall/donation bit is a far more reliable method of earning money.

Also, youtube changed some of their content policies on which videos can sell ads. Setting up an independent means of getting money from their fans gets around that problem.

YouTube is also cutting off ads to people who produce videos that young children probably shouldn't be watching. It's all because of the advertisers pulling out because their products were appearing on videos made by racists, radicals, etc.

There's also a few "ad free pay to view" channels popping up, I regularly block such things with an add on I have so they at least stop popping up during searches.

There's also an ad boycott due to companies being upset regarding their advertisements showing up on videos promoting racist, sexist, or otherwise offensive content. Thanks to how Youtube structures its advertising payouts, this has led to a rather massive reduction in revenue for content creators, regardless of what sort of content they're producing. A few of the channels I subscribe to have quoted ad revenue as dropping by 85% or more, which has led a lot of folks to start searching for alternate revenue channels, Patreon being one of the easier ones to set up.

One channel I watch has set that up. In response to the drop.
He was honest though and said its like 90% drop for some on ad revenue's.
He has 7-8000 subscribers and makes regular videos and streams.

Youtube makes its money off of advertisements. Currently a lot of companies are pushing for the content on Youtube to conform with what they consider consumer friendly on other platforms.
In the past few weeks the visibility of some background processes has increased. A few weeks back when they ramped up their consumer friendly material tool loads of people had all of their videos de-monetized (before Youtube predictably said "oh, our mistake" > not that similar issues haven't occurred before...), or when viewing Youtube in a mode which limits offensive content found that no videos appear on their channels at all.
People are moving away from ad-supported videos as they can't guarantee that using their current video format they'll either get ads at all, or only receive ones which're viewed by a limited number of people. Ad-blocker has an effect on this decline of monetized videos, but its this big push by the companies expecting Yotube to behave like a regular TV network (which currently they're moving towards with their TV streaming service). Patreon allows people to keep putting out videos in their current format, at least for a time before Youtube policy bans some stuff outright. Its worked in some cases, not so much in others, though many people have accounts there already to bolster the existing ad revenue (which was already declining, with people - i.e. some of the biggest Yotubers who're raking in thousands - saying that during the first quarter of the year it drops down to pretty much zero).
Youtube's a business, and well Google can do what they like with their website. If they banned any non-PG content they'd still make millions, they just have that much of a monopoly of the market. :/

Because literally everything on youtube (Especially some youtubers) have to become child friendly and boring as hell. Just because these companies want to stuff their awful adverts down our throat.
No wonder ad-block is so popular. It's like impossible to watch any monetized video without it. There used to be a skip button for those adds. That's gone now. I'm not going to watch or wait on some awful long ass advert that's about as long as 1/4th or half of the video I'm trying to watch.
Youtube might be a business, but those companies with their adverts can go stick their heads onto a giant pile of dookie.

There are also content id issues. For example, a video reviewing a game by Nintendo will have a content id block on it for showing footage of Nintendo's IP, meaning all ad revenue goes to Nintendo. That's why a lot of video game YouTubers use Patreon.

The problem with that is that when Nintendo claims a video, they monetise it. It doesn't matter if it was ad free already, they turn them on.
Jim Sterling's complained about this before, as his videos are ad free, but the ones where he complains about Nintendo's nonsense wind up being claimed. ...Followed by a counter claim from him explaining what free speech covers. A major issue with Youtube for years has been that the company allows heavy abuse of copyright law in the manner of fraudulent claims. If someone doesn't like your stuff you can claim they're infringing on your copyright, and either have it remove, or stop the creator from receiving ad revenue for the duration of the dispute. Another example involving Jim Sterling would be where a company recently said he was infringing on their trademark ...by him posting a review of their video game.
Unfortunately yes, none of this nonsense has made it to court as of yet. Jim Sterling (seeing a theme here) almost made it that far, before his lawyer stepped in (after months of legal disputes, and thousands of dollars...) and told the opposing party just how large of a new gakhole they were going to have torn into them if they brought that nonsense before a real judge instead of Youtube's phoney system.

I think at least Youtube has finally changed the system so that the revenue of a claimed video goes into escrow and is returned to the creator in the event of the claimant not following through with their claim into real legal action (which is the vast majority of these spurious claims).
Unfortunately, that doesn't fix the problem of, for example, video-game developers being able to temporarily silence criticism and hurt the creator financially by issuing spurious copyright claims on negative reviews, then instead of claiming the ad-revenue; elect to have the video be un-viewable and just wait out the period until they either need to file a proper lawsuit or the video gets automatically reinstated. Like has happened to the above named Jim Sterling numerous times.

There's a lot of issues with Youtube. Youtube is changing policies in regards to multiple different things affectinf many different content types.
To get add money, channels need to be a certain size. Certain content cant be monetized. Etc.
There's a fair amount of upheaval currently, and a lot of politics being read into some things and not enough into others, and everything in between.
Youtube monetization and content creation is going to change. In some ways Youtube is chasing more traditional markets and advertising. Some call this a mistake, but its their platform, and other, more direct sources like Patreon are showing up.

A LOT of larger companies and internet personalities are doing this with the sole intention of bullying smaller companies and personalities off of Youtube.
One of the more hillarious examples was Anna Sarkeesian (spelling???), a rather prominent internet woman's rights mouthpiece. She has sued and reported to Youtube dozens of people for using thumbnails with her face on them, using small clips of her talking, or even totally destroying some of her arguments (apparently this is hate speech?). She claims that people are stealing her IP , even though what they were doing was legal and obided by Youtube regulations. The funny part is when her own subscribers pointed out that Ana herself has DOZENS of videos that do exactly what she is complaining about. She denied it, and her own fans started posting screenshots of it. Priceless.
