It’s anything but a quiet Sunday evening as Fox has just dropped the full-length trailer for their upcoming series The Gifted. Set in the X-Men Universe, the series will take an action-adventure format. Blair Redford stars as X-Men member John Proudstar of the Apache, which comics fans will also recognize as Thunderbird.

The original series description speaks of a pair of normal human parents whose children begin to manifest mutant abilities, causing the government to come knocking on their door and setting them on the run.

The series also stars Stephen Moyer as Reed Strucker, Amy Acker as Caitlin Strucker, Sean Teale as Eclipse / Marcos Diaz, Jamie Chung as Blink / Clarice Fong, Coby Bell as Jace Turner, Emma Dumont as Polaris / Lorna Dane, Blair Redford as Thunderbird / John Proudstar, Natalie Alyn Lind as Lauren Strucker, and Percy Hynes White as Andy Strucker

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

That doesn't look half bad. Singer has always done good stuff with the X-men, and at the very least the production values are up to scratch, so I'm on board for this.

Do we know when it's airing yet or who's showing it in the UK?

Maybe?

But have we hit peak on lawyer/cop/firefighter/medical shows?

Have we hit peak on rom-coms at the movies?

If there's a market, it will work.

It has become fashionable to bash 'geek' stuff since 'geek' stuff has become somewhat popular/acceptable these days.

Usually quality programming will sell, crap programming won't, regardless of theme.

It's certainly not intended as a bash as I'll binge on any geek media going (although Arrow and Agents seem harder and harder to enjoy of late)

It's just the 'here and now' setting is kind of self limiting, I appreciate different time periods are expensive but I'd really like to see other times and places explored

They directly referenced the X-Men and the Brotherhood in the trailer... Only to say that they might not even exist anymore.

Build my hopes up, then dash them, why dontcha.

Although, the internet seems to be saying that one of the characters is Blink, ala Days of Future Past.

The big advantage of it being explicitly in the X-verse isn't so much that they have access to the existing characters, it's that they have a catch all origin story for mutants already established; they won't need to waste much time explaining how/why everyone got their powers, it's just a fact of the universe.

Should hopefully stop them getting bogged down in pseudoscience and let them focus on the character side of things, which has always been the strength of the X-men in comics and on the screen.

I think this looks good.. hopefully will be way better than Legion. My head still hurts from that first episode. Nice to see Vampire Bill back in action.

Looks like an impressive pilot, but I'll always have flashbacks to Heroes (or even Mutant X) where all the cool stuff was happening just off-screen because FX be expensive!

And Amy Acker looks very different as a blonde. Almost didn't recognise it was her.

This feels like a reboot of Heroes, right down to the similarity of the lead actress. A lot of us have nostalgia-vision concerning Heroes. It was interesting but a bit boring and low budget, too. It wasn't bad but everyone wanted to see the WatchHeroes version over the actual version.

The problem with this show is that the premise has been done to death. People just don't buy into the whole "evil government agency out to get you" trope anymore. Also, the whole "we have powers so we have to hide" thing is really getting old.

So what did we think? Overall I rather liked it. Real nice effects, specific name dropping of the Xmen and Brotherhood of Mutants so there's no question where it stands, nice nostalgia ringtone, and the quick obligatory Stan Lee cameo. Initially I was concerned maybe over the gal with magnetism powers for how that might step on Magnetos shtick or draw comparisons to him, but now am less so that I was told she's an actual character from the comics. I don't read Xmen so I don't actually know or recognize any of the cast. Only other main concern is the typical cliche of the kid of apparently huge amounts of power but a lack of control.

So far so good.

I like most things about it. I especially like how Lorna's in this. Been waiting for Polaris to reach the screen for a while now.

I've DVR'd it, but haven't watched it yet.

Good to see that it is pretty good so far.

In certain arcs she is considered Magneto's other daughter (maybe only daughter, given the recent QS/SW debacle). But Polaris having his power set and being his daughter does have canon; so it doesn't step on his toes much. Just a passing of the torch.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Well, it's no Inhumans...

...thankfully

Quite enjoyed it, maybe a tad trope-y but it's the first episode of a supey-hero show so that's expected. One to keep watching I think.

Well it's very pilot-y. Have to give the show time to grow.

And yeah, it's no Inhumans. Thank the One Above All.

Watched the pilot, not bad. It's kinda off-balance for me, seeing the non-canon approach they're taking. Kinda like F4antastic did and Discovery, too.

I'm not sure I like these alt-reboots.

I think the key difference that keeps me from being annoyed is F4ntastic and Discovery are it, they're all you get if you like those IP's, whereas this is more of an alt-reality side-dish to the movies, which are hit & miss in terms of quality but very much "these are the actual proper mutants from the actual proper comics". I can stomach a lot more variation if the core IP is still intact somewhere in the mix of shows & films.

er....someone noticed the family of which the siblings come from...with that mutant hunting father is called strucker?...is this a an important information for the plot?

Oddly enough, baron Strucker is more an avengers character, but his children are more X-Men characters. It's like a direct swap of magneto and his twins. If memory serves, that is. I haven't seen the Struker twins in anything in quite a long time, so my memory is a bit rusty.

The twins basically do joint energy blasts (and probably have some other powers on the side).

This is honestly the second time they've pulled a Strucker twins bait and switch. (As they did with the end credits of Avengers 1 then Age of Ultron: oops the 'twins' were Scarlet and Pietro).

Pretty good premiere though, all things considered. But wow is Stan Lee looking bad.

Also wow:

Episode 2 seems a bit rougher- maybe it's because so much going on in the real world, but it seems a bit forced.

She's a bit grungier in the show, with much shorter (and darker, even with the black dye washed out) hair.

With episode 3, I'm kind of checking out on this one. The special effects are better/more common than Inhumans, but honestly it has too many real world parallels (intentionally, obviously), but like a lot of X-titles, the fear and bigotry actually comes off as justified. Especially for walking WMDs with bad attitudes like the boy.
