How do?

Why yes. It will be a cold day in hell before I use their new name. but anyway

As a sad old Scrote of a gamer, my memory extends way back into the dim and distant past. So dim and distant in fact, that when I was a Nipper, the humble Chimera was an adaptation of the redoubtable Basilisk chassis, rather than the other way around. Believe me, that took some getting used to.

But did you know that the same humble, basic Chimera AFV once had not one, not two, but three, count 'em, three variants. And at the risk of sounding like the announcer on Running Man, they were the Chimerro, Chimerax and Chimedon.

You.....you didn't?

Time to correct that.

In the same order....

The Chimerro had the standard armament, but supported by other a magazine fed Hunter Killer missile launcher, or a rack of eight Hunter Killer Missiles.

The Chimeras replaced the turret weapon with a frankly silly, very silly indeed, Quad Autocannon.

Finally, the Chimedon (which I once converted up meself) had a turret mounted Battlecannon.....no, you read that right. A sodding Battlecannon.

The models for these were short lived, appearing solely in epic scale. They provided interesting new tales on what was, at the time, a shiny new transport (late 90's, appearing in Titan Legions before Epic sucked mightily)

But what other gems of the past can sad old Scrote tread heads recall?

I'll be honest, I barely consider Warhammer Epic to be a thing.

And you are wrong, since that's where a very large percentage of the bigger models in 40k now originated from - Imperial Knights, Stompas, Lord of Skulls, IG super heavies and virtually all the rest of IG armour in plastic, and countless others from FW.

The more you know...

...The Chimera variants sound fun and would have definitely been a cool alternative to the Taurox.

Well there was a 4th variant too.

This was the water version call the Pegasus. It was a Chimera but with amphibious assault capabilities.

AND THERE WERE GW designed and published rules in the Citadel Journal for 40K!
Pictures and conversions as well.

I never did see the Anvil. Not even sure what it looked like.

Of course there were the Leviathon, Minotaur, Centaur, Destroyer Tank Hunter, Salamander, Termite Tunneller, and more that I cant recall top of my head.

Having a light or medium tank would have been neat and befitting the background.

It's a pity they never made a 40k scale Siegfried or Ragnarok tank, based on the Epic scale tanks by the same names.

IG only really have access to heavy, super heavy and super duper heavy tanks on one hand, with the Centaur on the extreme opposite side of the scale and nothing in between. And the Centaur isn't really a tank either, but an APC/ artillery tractor.

A light tank based on the Chimera chassis, armed with turret-mounted Conqueror cannon (or something akin to that) might have been useful and fun.

Rules (2nd ed datafax) were also released for them in the old Armorcast magazine (name escapes me). I think I probably still have it somewhere. I don't recall Armorcast doing kits for them tho.

Not quite so venerable, but I'm glad I managed to get hold of a Destroyer tank hunter before Forge World stopped making them

There's also the tunnellers, and the Capitol Imperialis, which has all but been usurped by the Leviathan. Anything that can transport three Baneblades can't be bad.

Ooops, just realized these were proposed rules, not the actual rules. Still interesting so leaving the link

Well, it's possible they remake the Chimera in the future, and these seem to be pretty simple to add as variants, giving us 4 possible Chimera vehicles from a single kit.

I'm awful at reading private messages, so just reply to the threads I'm visiting.

I've always wanted more Chimera/Hellhound variants. Leave the current Chimera as is with its armament, but then have a smaller transport version with bigger guns.

A Hunter Killer Chimera would be awesome, even if just for how cool the model would look.

It'd also be fun to bring back the Ragnarok. Gothic KV-2 best KV-2.

Honestly I would love to see the Chimera get vastly expanded turret options. It would be pretty nifty to see it doubling as a medium tank as well as a transport.

We could even rip a page from the Stryker's playbook and split it into the Chimera IFV and Chimera Gun Carrier.

Chimera IFV: Classic Chimera with 12 model transport capacity and lasgun arrays.
May take:
Heavy Bolter
Multilaser
Heavy Flamer
Twin Heavy Bolter
Twin Multilaser
Autocannon

Chimera Gun Carrier: A Chimera chassis with no transport capacity and no lasgun arrays, to make room for a larger turret with a gryo-stabilizer.
May take:
Twin Autocannon
Battle Cannon
Twin Missile Launcher
Twin Lascannon
Punisher Cannon

Gyro-stabilizer: the Chimera Gun Carrier ignores the penalty for moving and firing heavy weapons.

There was the Gorgon mine layer and the termite, mole and hellbore tunelling tanks. They were fun

I'm still waiting for a plastic Autocannon turret for Chimeras. And for it to be in the GW rules.

Aye, I remember those. Still have a pile of them in lead as well. Good tanks. The assault company was good too. That'll be imperial guard assault troops with jump packs!

Obscure you say? The Hercules heavy tank. Appeared in an artwork and story in a page in Codex Titancius and was a transport/heavy tank in use during the Horus heresy. I would post a picture, but the only image I could find was from photobucket

I don't remember what it was called (storm-something. Storm Serpent?), but in Epic there was an Eldar superheavy built on the Scorpion chassis that was basically a full-scale Webway portal with engines. You could have anything you wanted walk on from reserves right into the fight, and move it around if the enemy got too close.

What is this "Chimera" nonsense?

In my first Imperial Guard army list, we got Rhinos and Land Raiders and we were happy with it!

Also Land Speeders, motorcycles, thud guns, rapiers...

Yeah, I was thinking if you're going old school, might as well bring back the Rhinos, Land Raiders and the ne'er seen Imperial Guard Land Speeders, lol.

It'd be slick to see a proper Leviathan come out - but it'd be a $250 plastic kit that no one would buy. The Helbore would be neat to see.

I also agree that original Space Marine, AT, and Epic really did produce the full range of things which later became 40K staples.

Yep, and don't forget Predators. Originally an IG tank and stolen by those filthy Marines...

I got Forgeworld autocannon turrets for my Chimeras and I don't regret it one bit. Expensive, yes, but so very, very sexy.

In the mists of time White Dwarf (136ish) published an article on how to DIY your own 40k scale Baneblade.

Getting a copy of those templates and putting one of these together is very much on my 40k to do list.

I'd love to make a diorama of one of these DIY baneblades facing down a bunch of the different DIY ork battlewagons white dwarf also published at a similar period!
