Today is the big day. Let's use this thread to share stories, photos, and chat about the eclipse.

I do not have the proper eyewear so will probably use a pinhole projector to view it.

I thought I could watch it through my cellphone camera, but they say that it will make your cellphones go blind too. I'm SOL, didn't get any glasses :(

One guy from work took the day off to go see it somewhere where it would be the best view or coverage or whatever.

We're NASA scientists. Ask us anything about tomorrow’s total solar eclipse!

For those going to look at it. There are a lot of misconceptions about looking at the eclipse with or without glasses.

Most importantly "During totality, you don't need eclipse glasses and shouldn't wear them. It's actually easy to know when to take off the eclipse glasses, because you won't be able to see anything. When totality is over, as soon as any bright Sun peeks around the Moon, you need to put your glasses back on. - Eric Christian, NASA/GSFC"

You can find more information about the eclipse in the above link.

Only going to be partial coverage down here, sitting on my patio now to watch. More interested in just watching it get dark during a cloudless day than actually looking at it since it won't even hit 2/3 covered at its peak.

A mega eclipse in the USA, and the chimes of Big Ben in London have been silenced for 4 years due to repair work.

If these aren't signs of the end times, I don't know what are!

Back OT.

I hope people enjoy this event. It's a wonderful thing to see an eclipse.

I'm off today, so I'm happy. I set my gopro up and am doing a timelapse now, and I've got my eclipse glasses ready.

Of course it's super overcast at the moment so this could be a big dud for me. I've never seen an eclipse before so I have high hopes.

If you couldn't get any eclipse glasses in time, I read you can just add some SPF30 directly to your eyes.

For as long as you live, you'll never forget it. There's something about the heavens that touches the human soul like nothing else, when you stare into the night sky and see millions of stars looking back at you.

It's good.

I can only imagine how our ancestors felt thousands of years ago when looking at eclipses, or stars, or standing next to Stonehenge on midsummer's eve etc etc

It goes beyond any human culture, civilization, or even empire that has ever existed.

About 95% of an eclipse here in Olympia, WA, about 2 hours from the totality zone in Oregon, was still quite the show

99.5% totality in Vancouver, WA. Shared a set of glasses with my coworkers, very cool experience. It's like the world put on sunglasses, wonder how it was to be in the totality zone.

I guess I like the idea of playing games much more than playing them...

Working at the library today and we are getting a lot of people looking for eclipse glasses.

One guy came in and asked about them. When we told him we were out he asked if he could look at the eclipse without glasses...

I really want a chart of the amounts of sun-induced blindness over the past year. I wonder how large of a spike there will be after today.

On moon miranda.

Watched it from the balcony of my place. It was kind of a weird scene, no cars on the road for like 20 mins beforehand, no pedestrians, everything was dead quiet, then the apartment got real dark as it passed through totality.

Interesting event to be sure, though not one I'd go to the lengths some did to witness.

I was supposed to be at Lake Marion, SC, which is in the path of totality, today but I couldn't take the time off work (I just used all two weeks of my vacation earlier this month!) so I had to settle for the 80% coverage that we were able to see in Northern Virginia.

It was cool, for sure, and my girls were able to enjoy it through one of my welding hoods so there was no need to buy glasses.

100% here and it was AWESOME! It got dark and all of the streetlights and our porch light came on. Had a beer holding hands with the wife and watched it, then had tacos for lunch!

100% here, it was totally awesome (see what I did there? )! Sky was a bit hazy, but it was still quite a show. We barely missed ending up under some thick clouds, so I count myself very lucky. There's nothing quite like a total eclipse! I now understand a bit more why some people travel all over the world to see these.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Here in North Texas we're in the 60-70%ish zone. I didn't plan ahead and get my glasses two weeks ago when they were still normal prices on Amazon. When I looked middle of last week, they were already sold out and were going for $30+ from the third party scalpers. Even welding lenses were already out of stock in all the local DIY stores by the weekend. So, all I could do was the pinhole method, just placing my fingers over each other to create a lattice I could look at the shadow with. Kinda neat to see all the crescents, but rather anticlimactic all the same.

On the other hand, the next big one in 2024 I will be right in the path of totality for it.
