Since Space Marines have the Librarian Dread and Eldar have the Wraithseer, what if Orks saw this and made their own by grabbing the nearest weirdboy, hammering a circuit board into his brain and stuffed him in a deff dread?

Would it prevent him from exploding his brain? Would it let him explode more brains (Other than his)? Are Orks crazy enough to actually do this?

If it works it's not crazy, it's genius. ;-)

But the dredd would have to be specially built for a weirdboy so he can channel enough power towards doing stuff. Orks normally keep them chained to big metal poles etc, the build-up of Waagh! energy drained and dissipated through the metal and thus keeping both the Weirdboy and his tribe safe. A metal box like a dredd might do just that, drain his power so he's safe. Well, as safe as a crazy psyker sucking up psychic energy from a whole army could be...

Unknown. Unlikely.

Unknown. Either extremely unlikely or super duper rediculously likely.

Are Orks crazy enough to actually do this?

Yes.

Its also not a good idea to stick a crazy Ork with a grudge (getting tied to a post to drain Waaagh! energy and constantly abused for being different) in a giant killing machine. Grots usually go on a rampage and kill their old masters when they become Killa Kans, and Deff Dreads usually go settle old scores. This is also a really really bad idea when that ork can summon a gigantic green foot to stomp you or really screw up physics by mistake.

I mean, CSM take a similar approach to Deff Dreads, binding an unwilling host to the machine. But in the Orks case, it makes them bigger, badder and killier. They usually enjoy their new state where CSM don't. The difference being that Helbrutes are enslaved to the Chaos Lord's will. But, a CSM would never put a powerful Sorceror lord in a Helbrute and try to control it. Its gonna end badly. For good reason that an Ork should also be aware of.

I suspect the answer would be a big, fat 'nuffin'.

Don't forget, Weirdboyz use Copper poles to earth the Waaaaagh energy. Bunging one in a Deff Dredd (or a Kan if you really want a laugh) may simply act to permanently earth his power.

So you'd just have a particularly loopy Deff Dredd (or Kan, because that'd be a laugh as previously covered) likely prone to bouts of Unorky melancholy on account he can't zap gits anymore.

And yet Orks still keep making Killa Kans.

When has a thing like common sense ever stopped em? And I'm sure Okish inventiveness could find a way around the whole "metal grounding" thing.

Exactly, just slap some antennas on the back of the dread to absorb more WAAAGH!!! energy and you got yourself a fired up psychic super deffdread. I doubt you could get non warpheads to be in a dread because once they get that dread active he might just go on a rampage to escape. A warphead on the other hand will want to get stuck in to get even more energy flowing.

As I say, it might backfire spectacularly, but "Slap a zappy git in a 'uge stompy fing!" is too satisfying an idea for a Big Mek to ever resist. And if it works, it's going to zapp and stomp somefing real good.

What weapon / upgrade load outs would best represent such a unit on the table?

Kustom Mega Blasta / Skorcha still a thing?

I reckon that does a good job of representing the zappy git letting loose 'controlled' bursts and the occasional vomit of WAAAAGHP energy!

I suspect it could be done with quite a possible hilarious outcome.

Since the Weirdboy it's always grounded he discharges all the waagh energy, this may result in him no longer feeling headaches and being able to act like a proper normal Ork.

So in a odd sense the Weirdboy may feel somewhat happy able to act all orky and smash the enemies like a proper Ork.

The downside it's all the extra energy may affect the mechanical and electrical systems of the dread empowering it in odd ways like boosting his speed, firing or melee as the Waagh energy overloads it.

This totally needs to happen now. From a fluff perspective I too agree it would have to be a warphead as they are willing to join the Waaaaagh instead of having to be dragged in shackled.

I was always under the impression that both deff dread and killa kan pilots were extremely voluntary - I recall a paragraph in the 5th ed book about grots lining up to get wired into a kan. Yes, it has drawbacks, but there's not a ork alive who wouldn't want to be bigger and stompier.

I can just see it as some sort of "Tesla Dread" where it'd have a ton of tesla coils around it to project the warp energy.

There are reports of "Witch Engines" utilized by Orks. One is prominant in the novel Baneblade in which a Weirdboy powers and commands a Gargant and its systems amplify and use his powers as a weapon, disabling and destroying multiple groups of IG tanks and even disabling a Shadowsword easily.

In theory a Weirdboy could be hooked up to any machine you want... How effective (if functional at all) comes down to the writer. These are Orks we speak of after all.

I too really like the koncept of a wierdboy deff dread. Not that we'd ever get rules or a model for it, but it's a fantastic idea.

This reminds me, in Epic scale Warhammer 40,000 you could mount Weirdboyz in towers carried by battlewagons, as some kind of ranged/artillery type weapon.

That's an in game precedent of such weaponry to go with the fluff example above.

In The Beast Arises there was an ork gargant* with weird boyz chained to the outside of it. If I remember correctly the effect was that the gargant had an extremely powerful psyhcic force field that the Imperials were having a really hard time getting through.
*It might have been a stompa, I can't recall what they called it in the book, but based on the scale of the battle I'm guessing it was a gargant.

Spoiler:
Vulkan gathered all of the librarians together on a plane and flew over the gargant. The librarians teamed up to briefly disrupt the force field. Vulkan jumped out of the plane and roflstomped the gargant. It was awesome.

I want to build a Stompa similar to the gargant from The Beast Arises, with lots of weird boyz chained to the outside. I'm thinking of building a weirdboy staff for one arm that counts as a lifta-droppa. I think the auto-hits and mortal wounds would do a good job of simulating a giant psyker walker smiting the enemy.

I believe Baneblade has a "witch-engine" (read: wierdboy stompa) called 'greeneye'. Given the psychic zapping and kineshield, a mekboy gargant is pretty good.

To stop the waaaagh energy dissipating the weird boy needs a grot powered dynamo also attached to the deff dread/killa kan to keep the psychic reserves topped up.

It will work.
