So, these are no longer stand-alone things in the Codex anymore, I notice. Is this just because we're in M42 instead of M41?

The 3e/4e Last Chancers were some of the most interesting models - you could kit them up individually almost any way you wanted!

Codex: Soyuzki - A fluffy guidebook to my Astra Militarum subfaction. Now version 0.6!
Another way would be to simply slide the landraider sideways like a big slowed hovercraft full of eels. -pismakron

Out-of-the-loop from November 2010 - November 2017 so please excuse my ignorance!

My prefered iteration of the Last Chancers was when they were 12 Independent Characters, each with their own special rules. No matter how big of a game you were playing, it was just them, and possibly an optional Chimera if you wanted it.

I've never seen 12 Imperial Guardsmen be so intimidating. I once witnessed an enraged Ox punch out the last wound on a Carnifex while a dead, yet still fighting, Hero held up a Genestealer mob. Now that was funny. And who didn't like Grease Monkey fixing a Destroyed Land Raider and riding around in it, blowing stuff up.

I actually still run the last chancers in my Penal Legion guard list (which is Catachan tactics for the prisoners, Valahallan tactics for the overseers manning the HWTs and some vet squads, so they can be ordered to fire into my own men who are in combat).

I run Ox as harker, Schaeffer and IH Straken, Shiv as a ministorum Priest, and all the rest sprinkled around as various sergeants/members of the squads.

When we start up a Shadow War campaign again where I play, my plan is to follow the Schaeffer method of playing a full game with my IG, then picking the survivors to form my Shadow War team.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
