Starting a new army!

I've had a bit of a soft spot for the Mechanicus since their release - I really like the the nightmarish quality of humans being mutilated into war machines, but felt like the red scheme was a bit to bright for the dark nature of the origins of the units in the army.
I eventually settled on dark green, and I've opted for as many gas masks and hoods as I can on the models to maintain the sinister, cult-y vibe.
As it stands, I have 20 Skitarii - 10 rangers, 10 vanguards, 3 kataphron destroyers and 10 infiltrators.

I put some more pictures up on my gallery, but here are some of the infiltrator I finished today, along with the ranger I finished about a week ago.

Any questions, please ask away, and I'm always happy to hear tips - I'm not completely confident about the osl glow on the ranger's pistol, and I'd like to know how convincing the heat glow on the power sword on the infiltrator is.
Thanks for your help, and for looking!

Fluff time! (afterthought - this is LOOONG, but it explains the silly name somewhat, and I had fun, so )
Spoiler:
For most guardsmen, the Carpathian Tin Ghosts were merely a story, told round a standard chemfuel survival and ration heating blaze. They were infamous, and, out of earshot of the comisariat, horrifying.
Said to be harbringers of rad-pollution strong enough to make flesh fall from bone over the course of a few weeks, legends said any who met the gaze of their glowing red optical sensors would die withing 24 terran hours.
Others, trying to scare fresh conscripts, told of their radioactive output being so potent that at extreme short range, it could be picked up as a steady, low clicking on standard issue coms equipment - but by the time any command unit detected it, it was far too late to save the platoon from the creeping poisoning of degrading cells and the boiling agony of mircowaved organs.
The glee with which a more experience radio operator could make his receiver suddenly emit these same low clicks, and subsequently make every guardsman within earshot scramble for his lasrifle with all the dignity and bravery of a snotling fleeing a particularly hungry squig was a brutal contrast to the reality of the Tin Ghosts of Carpath
Their role as reconnaissance and linebreaking meant that often only space marines would see them for more than a few seconds at a time, as fleeting units silently picked their way through the rubble of the battlefronts of the 41st millenium.

However, of all these rumors, only the most horrifying were verifiable, and of course, completely classified beyond the higher echelons of the Adeptus Mechanicum. Referred to in official documents only as the D.A.K. 16.10.16, they had indeed originated from Carpath.

A small moon, someway into the Ultramar system, Carpath 9 was a forgeworld in the hands of the Astra Militarum. Requests went in, Chimera chassis and troops came out. When the hivefleets arrived, Carpath was in disarray. First they ran out of turrets - troops ferried to the front with little in the way of defense, beyond the rifles in their hands. Then as the tracks for the tanks ran out, hollow shells of Chimeras were dragged into place as makeshift defensive walls. Finally, as so often it happened throughout the imperium, the Guard ran out of bodies to throw at the enemy
As bioforms spilled through the sky, and gaunts boiled in the underhives below, the planetary governor, Advisor General Mourn sent a desperate plea out to the Adeptus Mechanicus, promising them acess to all the manufactorums and stcs they could salvage from the planet, in exchange for his safe transit off Carpath.
By the time they arrived however, all that was left was an orbital hospital ship, filled with the broken bodies of what remained of the planetary defense force. Mourn was nowhere to be found.
However, in the cold, glassy sensors of a tech priest - resources are resources, and squander is heresy.
The few remaining conscripts were vivisected into killing machines, their name completely altered, reduced to the point of anonymity, representing their role at it's most minimalist level, to avoid association with the humiliation suffered at the hands of the tyranid invaders.
Considered shamed, and completely expendable, they are prohibited from donning the red robes of mars, and sent on forward missions of such extreme danger that few other admech maniples would ever be assigned them.

Despite rigorous neuro-scraping, the battle servitors of the D.A.K. 16.10.16 fight with the ferocity born of humiliation, and their high rad-output symbolizes their contempt for the frailty of living flesh, and the distance they keep from humanity in penance for their own failures as men.
(I lifted the DAK161016 moniker from a lame, but apocalyptic creepypasta from a few years back that I got a laugh from - the 161016 is like a reference to Revelations and also the coordinates of tel miggado - Armaggedon to you and I and the ancient greeks, while the DAK acronym is delightfully flexible, my favorites being 'double above knee (amputation)', 'dead at keyboard', 'deny all knowledge' and 'does anybody know')

Another ranger!
There's not much reason or rhyme to how I'm painting these models, but with three done, that's a 10th of the project thus far! Only 18 more skitarii, 9 more interceptors and 3 destroyers to go!
Oh boy...

As ever, if you have any tips for painting ad mech, and skitarii in particular, I'd be glad to hear 'em! These dudes are way more fiddly and detailed than my marines. Never again will I whine about painting eyes on my templars.

anyone know how to get a little more "oompf" out of the dials on the backpacks? mine only ever seem to come out as underwhelming blobs, should I highlight?

More Skitarii!

Here's another ranger. Slowly, I'm getting through my almighty backlog.
Question: Do you think the highlights are too bright? I just compared him to my first ranger, and I realize I've gone for much thicker, all-over lines with the second colour. I'm not sure if I don't prefer the older, more subdued one.

Anyway, thanks as always for checking my stuff out!

(goddamn do I need to dust those older guys off a bit, haha)

I have no knowledge of AdMech but I really like your overall scheme. Especially the first guy you posted.

The green highlights are perhaps a bit abrupt? I say that not because "I" could do any better, but because "you" obviously can!

Thanks very much, mate! C+C is always appreciated! Glad you like my stuff.
I think I need to go back to the older style then - irl the contrast is a lot sharper than in these photos. I'm really still learning to do fatigues and cloth properly. Still coming down off of my 'clean power armor' black templars.

Alrighty! Personal targets time.
I've got 32 days left in Korea. I've got a few more unpainted minis, but I wanna try and finish 1 10-man skitarii squad. Finished this guy this evening.
If I don't post back here in like a week, presume me dead!

Sunday paintday update.
Plinked away at these guys over this last week, and a fair old bit today. They're nearing completion which is pretty good, especially considering I'm gonna have to pack all this stuff up to send it all back to jolly olde England soon.

Finished a dude too! (still learning how to use this camera for minis, struggling to not get a bit of blur, even with my tripod and on a timer... )
Enjoy!

18 days left.

Finished my squad of 10! Much faster than I thought, especially as I've been pretty busy of late. Ain't none of you gonna tell me posermcbogus doesn't deliver on generous, self-imposed deadlines!

I might give a shot at finishing a unit of infiltrators next...
I tried a wash over the green after finishing highlights on a couple of these fellas. If you can even pick out a difference, I'd be very happy to hear your thoughts.
Cheers for looking!

Got 3 infiltrators from this squad left. Gonna try and have them done by next Monday - and then ship all this stuff back to the UK.

Super sneaky sicarian stealth update.

Waiting for my students to show up, thought I'd upload these pics I took last night.

Has anyone else found these minis to be super quick to paint? Even my templars seem to take longer, and they're pretty much just spray black, finish details, done.
It's a nice palette cleanser after the unrelenting fine-details, plastic overhang slog of the rangers (even if the models are soooo lovely).
7 Days.
3 Until Monday.
2 infiltrators to go.
Cheers for looking.

Done, with mere hours to spare.
So, I'm leaving Korea this week
It's been rad. Been busy the past few days packing and saying goodbyes and then saying more goodbyes but blasted on soju.
But I managed to find a bit of time to squeeze out the last couple of Infiltrators.
Enjoy! I'll probably see you all again some time in late October, when I should be back in Merrie Olde Englande.

Thanks for checking this project out, and to all those guys who've given me input!

Yo! Speedy update, as I've finished a few boyos, and they're going into storage for however long, as I flee the UK for the Land of the Rising Sun.

Quality is atrocious, but this is really for me to look at when I miss my lil bleep-bloop boys. UR-025 does the Omnisiah's work in Kill Team. I like to imagine he was recovered from Carpath, alone in some forsaken warehouse, slain tyranids all about him. The servitors who discovered him, in horror, saw his assault cannon whir into life, and just as the firing mechanism clicked into position, they were fortuitously met with the empty clacking of his depleted ammo feed.
Though UR-025's origins are mysterious, his hatred for the xenos menace is... useful. As such, he is sent on missions that make best use of his challenging origins, and volatile wrath, spearheading covert ops, and particularly, eliminating threats from within, where his unknown origins make him particularly valuable.

Another Kill Team hero.

This lil, unnamed, genocidal maniac is the Leader of my Kill Team. Along with UR-025 and one of my rust stalkers, he helped me win my only ever tabletop victory, cutting down guardsmen with his powersword in a one-man building siege that snatched an objective, and clinched me the game in the final turn. and for that, he will be remembered in the datalogs of the Carpathian Tin Ghosts until such a time as is deemed necessary for it to be erased to conceal their dreadful shame.
None are to be lionized; none will be absolved.

I'm more or less content with how this scheme is working out, now. I've still got an ALMIGHTY backlog to clear, so no new additions for a long while, but I have been eyeing things up, anyway. I've always been a fan of the chicken walkers and the spider tanks, the hoplites are gorgeous, though I might use the vanguard heads instead, and I'm thinking of converting one or two of them into banner bearers, because c'mon, this is 40k. More creepy techpriests is also more good, and I have some real interesting stuff coming your way on that front, I hope, but I'm also interested in the hover transports - specifically, and stop me if I sound mad...

...hacking off the hover bits and the rudders at the back...

...and giving it tank treads instead.

What are your thoughts?

As always, cheers for stopping by!
