I'm not in it to play on a competitive level, but I'd like to not lose all the time. I will soon be married to a woman who has a two year old son. There may be maybe two to four times per month when I might be able to get away to play a game or two. And, I have a feeling that the quicker I can get set up, the better. Custodes bring very expensive models to the table to seem to have some very good rules overall. And, they'd be a quick setup and tear down for me at my local game shop when I'm tight on time.
What do you all think?
Thanks

Adeptus Custodes definetely can work in a pseudo competitive scene, specially if that scene is full of Space Marines (Like mine).
They are the bane of elite armies, and even agaisnt hordes they can do work (If you have minimun two squads of hurricane bolters Vertus Praetors).
And they are very resilient agaisnt anti tank weaponry, meltaguns, etc... the things that most screw Custodes overs are things like Autocannons (The Predator Autocannon just decimates a Adeptus Custodes army), heavy bolters, etc... in general, weapons with 2-3 Damage and -1/-2 AP and a 6 or more S.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Wait and see how the FAQ limits them. If you can only have one of each HQ, you either have to take absurdly expensive and not helpful Trajan, or really bad, really expensive non-bike Captains.

Blood Angels, Custodes, Tzeentch, Alpha Legion, Astra Militarum, Deathwatch, Thousand Sons, Imperial Knights, Tau, Genestealer Cult.
I have a problem.
Being contrary for the sake of being contrary doesn't make you unique, it makes you annoying.

I've taken to describing Custodes as the Golden Path writ large; there's one path to victory and if you fall off it you're kind of screwed. In practice if you roll well you're allowed to keep playing, but if you roll badly the game stops, so it becomes a race to see how much you can blow up before you brick a critical roll and die.
A standalone Custodes army is fantastically unreliable, it swings from auto-win to auto-loss depending on die rolls and matchup. Run them with Guardsmen for more Command Points and a non-pointless Shooting phase and they'll get more done.

They are very, very strong, provided there aren't 4+ objectives on the table. You won't have the bodies to control the board. These guys pump out high strength, high AP, multi-damage attacks like crazy and are nigh unkillable. They have 4 wounds minimum and effortlessly get a 3++ invuln. Their base save across the board is 2+. So the best weapons against them are S6+, AP-1 or AP-2, with multi-damage. Not much out there fits that description, and with enough volume to actually hurt them. They also get a -1 to hit bubble, making them even more durable. If there are no objectives on the table, and you can only score/win by killing your opponent, these guys would be the top army in 40k. Their limitation is the number of bodies, so controlling the board, and taking more than 2 objectives, is really difficult for them without spreading out super thin. Their basic troops put Kaldor Draigo to shame.

8 bikes(3 captains), 3 minimum squads, three assassins, a primaris psyker, and the usual militarium troop and mortar CP battery.

Sounds like a competitive Custodes army to me.

competitive... only as part of soup. If you want a small elite army, or some cool minis they work great. To me I have 1500 points in custodies that fit in a small tool bag, roughly the size of one of those clamshell lunchboxes. They are fun in open war games

I’m running them with Smurfs - it’s a good combo for me so far.

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough. |

I have collected about 5000 points of these guys. I can't wait until the Telemon dreadnought gets rules.
They do play games quickly. If you can pull off a charge against any non HQ in the game with 5 of them, chances are it will be dead before swinging back.

It is better to also take some psychic defence as well. When facing armies that can throw 20+ Mortal Wounds at you. Your Golden Warriors will die like Conscripts. That warlord trait allowing deny once and 6+++ against smite may not be enough. So maybe also consider a small detachment of GK and / or a Culexus running along with them.

I would say they are definitely worth it. On their own they work, but with guard allies they excel. As a couple of people have said, if you take some psychic defence and some cheap bodies it works really well.

They can work all alone but it is all in the dice. I had a squad of 3 regular guys take out a Bloodthirster then next turn die to bloodletters. They are fun but might not be great for a certain meta.

That sounds like you charged the BT then your squad was charged by the BL... I wouldn't put that on the dice if that is how it went down.

I recently got a small army and I enjoy playing them, though did get ganged up on where had to deal with 1K each of Harlequins and Marines using salamander chapter tactics.
So to survive as long as I did, I did well. have one of the FW dreads on order to give it a go since it has 40K beta rules

Yeah, custodes can totally work as a stand alone force. The jetbike shield captains are hard as nails, the fellas with the grenade launchers that can deep strike are also super solid.
