Subject: Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 38 April 2018: Agents Of Chaos
Welcome to the 38th round of the Unofficial Painting Challenge! For the unfamiliar, this painting challenge is a friendly affair open to any Dakka members, whether you're winning Golden Demons or just painting Demons gold! The more you enter, the more points you accrue based on a public vote, and these are tracked in a League Table over the course of the year.
This month, the theme is Agents of Chaos, the individuals and groups that exist to cause havoc, wreak destruction and invite madness into the world around them, one blade, bullet or spell at a time. As always, this is fully open to your interpretation, it's a nice broad theme to go wild!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of April and will end at midnight GMT on the 30th of April. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

I’m in. Time and weather permiting, i might build and prime two more to make the 5 model limit. These 3 guys have been loitering around the back of the bench for a while. Four of their kin made it out for “Primal”, now it’s thier turn.
My entry this month... a bunch of bloodbowl fans for my orc team, the blackrock bad boyz.
they do not directly belong or represent chaos, but the bring chaos to the edge of the pit and devastation upon the enemy fans and players.

Nice idea SirOllox an interesting interpretation of the theme, hope to see more like that as well
I originally thought I would go for my Shokk attack gun since having a snotling turn up inside you is quite chaotic. However I had a bit of a search around and could find many Chaos Ork conversions so thought I'd have a go.
I'll be doing a Ork Nob that's been possessed by Chaos.
Alrighty, second month in a row here. Going to enter some converted Poxwalkers, sowing the seeds of Nurgles Chaos amongst the citizens of the Imperium.
I'm entering with my agents of the Officio Assassinorum:
Even one of these guys can cause chaos and havoc among the enemy, so I figure a full-fledged Execution Force should qualify as agents of chaos!
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 12 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

I doubt I'll finish him, but I'm entering sly marbo.
Before I start, resin has to be washed in hot water first, right?
Also, I've had some bad experiences with superglue frosting before, is it still better to paint in a sub assembly?

HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

@CREEEEEEED i'd be careful rinsing finecast. I actually don't wash mine and it turns out okay. I'm too afraid of just warping the model out of all recognition. Superglue frosting is classic, but if you can apply it in careful enough quantities, then you should be able to avoid it altogether. Good luck!
I need to keep thinking of a way to warp my ultrasmurfs to fit the "Agents of Chaos" theme...

not hot mate, just warm-ish...with a bit of dish soap or something...if you use hot, it's liable to go all soft and bendy on ya! (which you may need, if there's any bits that are curved, and shouldn't be...)
as for superglue...I've never had frosting problems myself, might depend on the brand? ...fwiw, I use Selley's quick fix...might be an australian brand though, dunno...
*hah...man I got ninja'd on that one!

Don’t you have some filthy tau on your workbench? By opposing the imperium they do the work of Chaos. But any sort of disruption unit would work well. Scouts, assault marines, reivers, land speeders, bikes. Anything that’s going to hit, cause some carnage, then move on before retaliation arives.
righto, I'm in...I would've liked to do something more on the fun and wacky novelty side of things, buuut...I actually need these dudes painted for a game soon ...and just look at them...I mean, you wouldn't be particularly inclined to invite them to your next formal dinner party or something would you?

Chaos, eh? Okay, I’m going to paint Lord Commander of the Imperium, Roboute Guilliman, Primarch of the Ultramarines, whose return caused all manner of chaotic uproar amongst the High Lor-Plague Marines. I’m doing Plague Marines.
Before I start, resin has to be washed in hot water first, right?
Also, I've had some bad experiences with superglue frosting before, is it still better to paint in a sub assembly?
As others have said, I use lukewarm water, dab of washing up liquid and a old toothbrush to give resin a good (but gentle) clean before undercoating it.
From my research into it I believe the frosting from superglue is caused by a build up in fumes in the area where the glue is which then causes the white effect. I do 2 things to try and avoid it:
- I paint the base colours and a wash on the parts and then glue them together then do the highlighting so if you do get a bit of frosting its easy to go back over it with the base colour.
- Use a small amount of glue (you really don't need much) and keep the glue joint well ventilated.
Well, I have only ever been faithful to the Emperor, so this is as close as I get:
This is one of my Deprogrammed Psykers. They are inspired by one of the AdMech books where they use a Gellar Field to exorcise a daemon. Thing is, we all know that anything tainted by Chaos can always be corrupted again. So they brainwiped his personality, prescribed him a regimen of drugs, and stuck a bomb inside his chest. Just in case.
And in case anyone is curious, in terms of the modelling, this is a kitbashed Primaris Psyker combining a Warhammer Fantasy Hurricanum Acolyte body and staff with a Skitarii Ranger Alpha head, Radium Pistol, and Arc Maul. I also took a spare servo skull and cut out an aquila for the embellishments.

gonna finish off my Khorne Bloodreavers. These 5 are the last models from the Warhammer Quest Hammerhall set.
Proof:
started work on them today. Going to paint them to match the first 5 I've done, but trying to make this guy look like he's going demonic, but a little worried he just looks sunburnt right now. Any advice?
