I'm not saying its bad because it looks pretty well realised...I'm just saying that my fragile little mind cannot comprehend it's purpose, let alone its glory... why?

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

A quick GIS reveals that a cowboy riding a jackalope is something of a country & western meme.

It's always interesting to see stuff like this and realize it fills an apparently huge market gap.

Like Nurglitch, I always thought the jackalope was a tall tale of the Old West, much like Pecos Bill. However, the picture Madonna and Child in a Garland of Fruit and Flowers by Jan Brueghel the Elder and Peter Paul Rubens painted about 1620 has a jackalope!

http://www.getty.edu/art/exhibitions/rubens_brueghel/homepage.html
To see it you'll need to enable Adobe Flash. Go to the Exhibition tab, and select Madonna and Child. The Jackalope will be shown in an inset. A further bit of trivia. Brueghel the Elder was obsessed with guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are in the Madonna and Child, Flora and Zephyr, and Return from War pictures in that exhibition. The Entry of the Animals into Noah's Ark which is in the Getty's permanent collection also has guinea pigs, as does Landscape with Ceres (Allegory of Earth) by Brueghel the Younger. My hypothesis on this is basically, Brueghel the Elder wanted to paint the guinea pigs as they were creatures of the New World and still a novelty in the 17th century. As he did have some wealthy patrons, it is possible that one of his patron let him sketch the exotic imporst in the patron's menagerie.

Yeah, it's a very old thing. In Thuringia it's called Rasselbock. The Wolpertinger in Bavaria is similiar, but usually has wings.

A winged jackalope, you say? Hmm.

Maybe the winged version is a stretch goal?

Thanks for the links, Dryaktylus. So some old German folklore migrated across the Atlantic and adapted to its new home. The Jackalope story I was told runs sort of like this ...

The jackalope is a shy, inoffensive creature that wouldn't hurt a fly, except during mating season, which runs through December to December. During mating season, the males get so ornery, they'll charge anything, no matter how big. Buffalo give way to the jackalopes because they feel sorry for the foolish creatures.
