Yes...THAT Event Horizon

https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/event-horizon-series-amazon-1203291883/
Amazon and Paramount Television are developing a series adaptation of the 1997 sci-fi horror film “Event Horizon,” Variety has learned.

Adam Wingard is set to executive produce and direct the potential series. Wingard recently directed the film “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which is due out in theaters in March 2020. He has previously directed films like the recent “Blair Witch” reboot, “The Guest,” “You’re Next,” and the live-action version of “Death Note.” He also wrote and directed films like “Autoerotic” and “What Fun We Were Having.”

Wingard willl executive produce along with Larry Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Jeremy Platt. Gordon and Levin both produced the film.

The film was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and written by Philip Eisner. The titled referred to a spaceship that disappeared after testing an experimental gravity drive capable of creating an artificial black hole that was meant to allow the ship to travel to distant points in the galaxy. A rescue crew and the gravity drive’s inventor are sent to investigate after the ship mysteriously reappears, only to discover that the ship traveled to a hellish dimension outside of the known universe that infects it with a sinister sentience, leading to multiple deaths.

Not exactly a sterling line up of films for that director.
In fact pretty dire =/

Funnily enough I rewatched EH last Sunday evening. Whilst still enjoyable it really hasnt aged that well when one rewatches it.
Effects are a bit dated, some very cheesy dialogue and definite pacing issues hamper it a bit..

This.

Just why?

It's not like the movie is even all that good. It's campy and we love it for being the unofficial 40k movie, but it's not like anyone has ever clamored for more.

*insert stereotypical comment about the entertainment industry lacking originality*

I'll probably watch it anyway.

I actually like the film still on rewatching, despite some flaws. I wonder why it needs to be developed in a series though. I'd love to be proven wrong, however.

they are remaking rockos modern life, home alone, planet of the apes again, lords of the rings etc.

Holly wood has no original ideas left, so why not dig this corpse up :(

I can see a remake of Home Alone though. It's just a basic concept, it feels like it's hard to screw up. I'd happily go see another one of those.

The last 3 Plant of the Apes movies were okay. I'd watch more LotR. I never liked Rocko anyway, so no skin off my back

I really liked the movie, it's a fantastic flick, my expectations on this will be quite low however. That said, I'm interested in seeing how it turns out, maybe I'll be surprised.

I'll agree that it does seem like the 90's are starting to leak back out again, and some of that really needs to stay back in the 90's

I could see it as some kind of dark sci-fi version of the Twilight Zone. Each ep a separate plot about space stations, astronauts etc encountering otherwordly and hellish gak.

I mean that's probably not what we're going to see but it would be a neat idea.

Oh god thank you. This is my favorite film of all time (okay it's tied with Cannibal Holocaust).

I know they won't be a part of it, but Sam Neil and Laurence Fishboure were amazing. It was a one of a kind movie, and the only sad part is them cutting the extra gorey scenes out and those pieces of film getting lost.

Still very excited for this!

Um yes. Like where exactly it went and what everyone experienced that lead to such depravity and madness.

I am interested in how it could be expanded into a series as long as it's a mini series with a definitive story and an end.

A more long form story telling could allow for more creepiness and more horror that a short form in the a movie just doesn't have the room for.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

The tale of the people lost in the first place seems like a win. Starts out typical sci-fi, maybe the first episode is the jump “there”. Then the episodes keep ratcheting down. 2nd episode hints at the horrors in the shadows, while the crew is dismissing it as just their imaginations. Bring the Demon-egg on board...

In the end, an unreliable narrator is talking to a corpse or some spooky gak like that before throwing the self-sacrifice switch to send the Demon home.

I would watch that.

I guess you could make a series set after they get back to Earth? I mean, they had to use the front half of the EH as a lifeboat, maybe part of the evil stays attached to it? Back on Earth everything goes DOOM-shaped? Like a futuristic Stranger Things?

Horror works best when we don't understand the how or why, when we don't see the full monster. Knowing the causes, rules, and limitations of the hellship phenomenon would allow us to breathe easy. Is that really what you want from this franchise? You want its midiclorians?

Hollywood has loads of original ideas and there are loads of fantastic original films being made every year, even if you ignore everything beyond mass-release films.

Hollywood does follow money, however, and loads of punters want to go and see remakes and franchises. They want to take their kids to see the new version of the thing they loved. They don't want to pay money to see a thing that might be great.

Same deal as when people complain about how there's no good, original music anymore. There's loads, but the average listener only buys a handful of releases a year and mostly they want to buy another repackaged Greatest Hits by the band they loved when they were a teenager.

Creators and studios do produce and promote original stuff, but it's hard to blame the big studios for also churning out bankers.

In a year when the top 10 movies by box office include 4 sequels and 2 remakes, maybe people should start complaining that "all people want to see are sequels and remakes", instead of complaining that Hollywood is producing exactly what people want to see (and pay for).

So far as Event Horizon... who knows. I love the original movie. I don't think there needs to have been a sequel, but if it was done well enough it could be great.

I felt the same about "Fargo" and they've been great shows for the most part.

After looking at the directors body of work, I'm a bit worried.

Which got me thinking, has Amazon laid any stinkers with their original content? I tend to only watch what my coworkers recommend, and Bosch, Jack Ryan and a few others haven't disappointed.

Why?

Setting aside the fact that the parties involved think there's a buck to be made, the creative justification only has to be that they think they have a good story to tell based on the original material. I mean, there's pretty clearly a creative opportunity to tell the story in a more satisfying way than the movie, which lost its way rather spectacularly during the third act. I think Lance845 is on the money that more hours leading to more slow burn might work better for this particular material. More storytelling also might reduce the need for a quick, internal-logic-wrecking Hollywood ending.

Admittedly, I don't understand the 'do we need this?' mindset. It's entertainment that you can choose to enjoy or not. We don't really *NEED* any of it.

Regarding the director...I dunno. You can only work on the stuff you were hired to do, and the nature of directing means that a younger director can only have so many items on the resume. I'm a creative professional, and there are certainly many things I've done that I wouldn't put in my portfolio, just because those particular jobs weren't good ones to start with. Directors don't have the luxury of only showing off their best, most representative work. It's all out there for everyone to see.

This is absolutely on the money. Audiences aren't showing up for daring, original material in theaters like they used to. Prices are too high, and home theaters are too nice. What they're turning out for are big, safe franchise films.

I guess they could do something similar to "The Thing", and show what happened to the Event Horizon's original crew.

What this REALLY has me worried about is them making a habit of remaking movies that don't need remade. Keep your damn hands away from Krull, Hollywood!!! I would say the same for Enemy Mine, and as far as remakes I'd DOUBLE DOWN on that sentiment, but there were other short stories set in that universe that could easily make the jump to film.
