if you want an army deal that doesn't have the case but has the rules, is there any difference if you buy the non-premium deal and the rules?

I feel you! I just want to read the dang rules. I won't play any game, no matter how beautiful the models, if the rules suck (Looking at you, Confrontation!).

Wha...?!?

Opinion of Reecius -dropped.

I agree here though - can't spend that kind of money (I 'need' at least 2 forces) without knowing a LOT about the ruleset.

I don't think you paid enough attention to what he wrote - he's saying if you want the rules, just buy them PLUS an army deal.

The 'premium' deals come with cases - do you really need that? No!

Make your own 'deal' by adding in the rulebook, and the cost is... equivalent!

That's what I...for god's sake are you even following the conversation you're quoting?

Sarge wanted an army deal WITHOUT the case but WITH the rules (That's what "as opposed to" means!)

A premium army deal without the case, is a normal army deal
A normal army deal + the rules is roughly the cost of a premium army deal
so you can have an army deal which has rules AS OPPOSED TO the case (which is precisely what Sarge wanted)

Simply outstanding mini's and the game sounds like it might be fun too. I'm going to buy one of the starter armies.....and maybe one (or all) of the UCM air assets, they look amazing! Even if I never play the game in my area these mini's are worth getting just because they look so cool.

Yeah, bummer about no solid rules info, although the page you linked to helps some, Reece.

Prices are a bit on the high side but I think OK.

For those baulking at the price know that this is a company website at markup.

Small providers jack their company price up while expecting other suppliers to discount. expect to knock 20% off all prices by the time you get to buy from third party webstores.

From the Spartan games website Dystopian wars appears expensive, but the models de facto sell for considerably less than that.

Hawk Wargames FAQ wrote:Do the four factions play differently?

All four factions have distinct and different playing styles. They'll be much more on this in future, but for now, here's a basic summary:

The UCM are all-rounder's, with the ability to field a good number of troops. The UCM also has a lot of choice for air power, such as the awesome Seraphim. Their dropships are some of the cheapest in the game in terms of points cost, and as such they can normally get a few more ground units onto the table than other armies.

The Scourge are fast, aggressive and devastating at close range. Shrewd players will benefit most from their abilities, since left exposed their units can absorb less punishment that those of the other races. they also have several unorthodox units (such as the Desolator), which gives them some interesting modes of attack.

The PHR have the widest range of weapon options and upgrades, as well as some of the toughest units in the game. what they lack in numbers they make up for in quality. Almost every choice is better equipped than equivalents, although normally cost more points.

The Shaltari operate very differently from the other races, since they use teleport gates to deploy and relocate on the battlefield. This gives the player a wealth of tactical options. their units are lightly armoured, although this is offset by their use of 'Passive Countermeasures' -all encompassing energy shields which effectively give them a saving throw from shots at any range or power.

Oh I love how they explain this!

Prices? What? for 17 models and cards for models AND a small KR carrying case it is 137ish usd. . . Whats the issue with prices? Now mind you that is the Premium Small Army Deal and that includes 3 Medium Dropships, 6 tanks, 2 APCs, and 6 Infantry (UCM)

Yea thats about 38+ models per player though, not to mention that this is with likely 4 players at a time! That is also with 10 structures or so as well so that could effect things since infantry can hide easily enough.

Yes! However, I think if anything the rules could even still be being printed... but putting up a bat rep, army creation guide, anything like that would help.

Reading all the unit pages really helps, though, as does the FAQ page, to get a general idea of what games will be like and what the different units do.

Also, this text below. Reading this really brought home for me what an achievement this is for the creator. I'll definitely be getting some, just hoping for more information on army composition / gameplay as the month goes on.
Hawk Wargames wrote:About Hawk Wargames

Hawk Wargames is a brand new company, dedicated to the design, development and production of class leading miniatures and wargames. Our first venture is the 10mm scale sci-fi massed battle game, Dropzone Commander. Our greatest ambition is to provide a whole range of innovative and high quality wargames in multiple scales, and multiple game universes.

We intend to support Dropzone Commander with new models, races expansions and narratives well into the future - despite the long and hard road it's been to reach this point, we still love our product!

Designers Notes

I've been working on Dropzone Commander for over two and a half years, and it's been the most rewarding and certainly the most ambitious project I've ever undertaken. It's taken more hours work than I'd like to think about and more 2am's than any sane person would wish to see! However, I feel that it's all been worth it, especially at this exciting stage where all the elements of the project are at last coming together. Revealing the range at Salute! 2012 was an exhilarating experience - it was a relief and a pleasure to finally see people's reactions to what I had created.

I designed and digitally sculpted the vehicles and sculpted the infantry the old fashioned way. Every painted model you see on this site is my own work, as is all the scenery scratchbuilding. I've spend countless hours meticulously preparing the thousands of masters and submasters, as well as producing the graphics. The creative writing and rules creation is my work also. I've spend many weeks in the studio shooting the 21,000 individual frames needed for the imagery, as well as many long nights at work editing. I've also learned a lot about business through the course of setting up the company, and no doubt I have a whole lot more to learn!

Most would say that such an undertaking was ambitious to the point of foolhardiness, and they'd be right! However, looking back at all that work I feel that it's lent the project a consistency and unity of purpose that is often hard to come by. I hope you get a sense of my passion for this project, and the care to which I've taken over it.

I'd like to take the opportunity at this point to thank my family and my wonderful girlfriend Bex for their unwavering support during these few difficult years, without which this project would have been utterly impossible. I'd also like to thank my friends for sticking by me and putting up with my ramblings, even though I've had very little time to give them. I'd also like to thank all the companies I've worked with along the way for their professionalism and dedication to quality, especially my long suffering casters, who have always gone the extra mile to deliver excellent work.

Enjoy the models and the game - I hope you have just as much fun collecting, painting and playing Dropzone Commander as I had in creating it!

Is this really the point you're trying to make? Im guessing you actually get more "stuff" (and larger to boot) than you do in any of those starters. That's not to say I think they're an awful deal, but I don't think you're making quite the impressive point you think you are.......

Also, Wow! I just realized that when you click on any image on the website to blow it up, it pulls up a whole line of other images of that model below it. Talk about detailed views of models!!

I know, I know, I want rules too, more than anything else. But seeing those Shaltari walkers from upside down and sideways views is just fantastic

One of my largest wonders is if the walkers and such will "click" into their spots on the dropships; my guess is that they're probably going to need magnets.

I dig the PHR quite a bit, but I was a bit surprised to see how small the walkers were. I mean, I knew it was 10mm but I guess since I don't play any games in that scale I didn't really understand how small it was.

Like many, I think I need more rules info before I drop the $$$ on the models.

the points on the PHR at least 'snap' into the Dropships, However, i would think repeated insertion/removal will make the fit quite loose (and scratch the paint so i reckon magnets are the way to go.)

The FAQ linked early, basically says you need magnets.

Well I've just taken the plunge, £103 for the rule book, a starter army (which includes the command cards apparently) and a case to carry everything in is in my opinion one hell of a good deal. Compared to GWs pricing this is quite cheap and as far as I can tell at least more inline with the costs for a decent sized army in one of the PP systems.

I just want to see it's FoC equivilent. I would like to field a mostly air force with either UCM or PHR but don't know if it's doable.

The prices were disheartening a little. The difference between paying 200 dollars for a 750-1000pt GW army and a large army starter with DZC is that people actually play GW games just about anywhere.

Your going to have to convince not only yourself, but at least 1 or 2 more people to buy this game that has virtually no support attached.

Im less interested, but still there.

(Note: If the point about seeing a 15 to 20% price drop at resellers is true, it might be the boost needed.)

As someone who has pawed 80-90% of the models in the range and played a good sized game of this I am happy to put my money down. Dave plans to support his rules more closely than GW ever did.

Plus the models really are that good, after the 'emperor's new clothes syndrome' that is finecast I can understand why people may be cynical that quality is worth paying more for but believe the hype. I saw a Shaltiri Eden medium gate hurled at a table top, watch it bounce then got to examine it there and there was nothing broken, nothing bent.

I'm going to be putting my money down.

Hawk Wargames wrote:Athena Air Superiority Fighter
The Athena is a formidably armed, multi-role heavy fighter. Powerful and well armoured, a single Athena can be more than a match for several lesser interceptors in the hands of a skilled pilot.

Its primary mission profile is air interdiction. Equipped with twin long barrelled Skybane rail repeaters, the Athena can engage enemy aircraft at long range, and with deadly effect. Its under-wing hardpoints can also be loaded with a pair of Cloudspear stealth cruise missiles, making it equally devastating in the ground attack role. A Shadowkiller launcher augments this already lethal firepower, adding anti-tank capability to the Athena's already extensive repertoire.

It is considerably faster at combat speed than most other aircraft encountered over the battlefield, making it difficult to intercept. It is able to supercruise near ground level with the assistance of its support AI and advanced terrain-following scanners.

I am in love. . . God I would field one of these every chance I get, even if it means 1 less dropship and support. . .

Not sure if the US prices have been posted yet or not. This is what I just got from E-Figs, who I expect to have it in the US before other distributors. These are the retail prices in US dollars. The manufacturer is also stipulating that retailers cannont discount more than 10% off this retail. (Applies to US retailers, no clue on rest of the world. Similar set up to Battlefront, Mayfair games, etc.)

Soon as I get ship dates, I'll put up some pre-order deals I'll be offering.

I think a Black "stealth" force, Green forest force, and a urban camo force would do just right.

Oh god I don't even want to think about painting yet, I've got no idea what sort of colour scheme to go for on my UCM. One minute I want to do an urban scheme, the next forest, then winter, desert or a mix of all four. Well I have atleast got one element of the scheme sorted out and that's the Battlegroup markings, I intend to base my markings on the system used by the British Army in WW2, should look pretty good on the hulls of the UCM tanks.

I can't quite fathom why people have a problem with the price?

Compared with the current prices for Epic from GW, you are paying anything from roughly the same to half price (for a comparable model) but are getting something that is nearly twice the size and better detailed.

Compared to FoW you are paying roughly half price for models more than half the size.

These are based on RRP of course and not an extensive trawl through the entire catalogues concerned, so please don't waste thread space picking out every example I missed that falls outwith these limits

The point though is that they are sold at a 'premium' price as far as the 10mm wargaming market is concerned (a market dominated by historicals which are dirt cheap anyway) but when you put them up against big players in the industry they are very reasonably priced for the quality you get.

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Have you thought about the Axis of Evil pension scheme?

These prices are actually quite good compared to B-tech and other metal or resin minis.

To compare buying the various army deals vs. buying up later, based off the PHR lists:

Large army vs Basic Army + piecemeal purchases saves you £30
Mega army vs Large Army + piecemeal saves you about £25. (note the PHR army list doesn't include the 2x Taranis vehicles shown in the picture).

Does that apply to the Scourge deals too? they mention the larger deals have a different makeup to the other forces
