Swords, guns, spaceships, horses, lances whatever it is lets see your thoughts on the greatest duels in cinema!
No armies, no legions, no fleets, just a few standing there to duel and fight it out!
And yeah I'll start the bar nice and high with the fantastic duel at the end of A Few Dollars More. A powerful end of the film that's been building its way toward this final confrontation. This final few moments
Its anime and not a film, but the end of Trigun is a favorite of mine. Particularly when it comes to the way they use the cylinders on the revolvers and how it comes down to a great "bet you forgot that was there" kind of moment. Anime honestly has some of the best duels out there, but the end of Trigun remains one of the best.

"You listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks
Just about any of the lightsaber duels from any of the Star Wars movies (except TLJ) would fit. My personal favorite of all of these is Qui-gon Jinn and Obi-wan Kenobi vs. Darth Maul, as seen in The Phantom Menace. Hate on that movie all you want, that fight was amazing!
My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

It had great choreography and visuals, but as a storyline it was IMO pretty weak sauce - the fight had no flow or proper idea behind it, characters had no believable motivations, it was just wushu for sake of wushu. Compared to hugely emotional confrontation in RotJ, it fell flat. Though, it is still better than any of the subsesquent prequel duels.
My all-time favourites include subway station fight in first Matrix between Neo and Agent Smith - great directing and story of the fight between Smith's machine-like power and execution and Neo's superhuman abilities and obtained skill and form. Even better is duel between Jen and Shu Lien in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - great character motivations they built an entire movie before it, and excellent inner storyline where Shu Lien's superior experience meets Jen's unbeatable magic sword.

Aragorn vs Lurtz is one of my favourite one-on-one fights, I remember the first time watching Fellowship in my early teens and thinking it was awesome, and I still do!
Edit - added the Video

You know that both parts were mostly played by Steve, right?
Of all the races of the universe the Squats have the longest memories and the shortest tempers. They are uncouth, unpredictably violent, and frequently drunk. Overall, I'm glad they're on our side!

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is virtually Epic Duels: The Anime series, but I think the one that stand out for me is the D'Arby "battle" in part 3. It's barely even a physical fight, instead being a poker game with the souls of the heroes at stake, fought through a battle of nerves and psychological warfare. It marks the spot where the series started getting really creative and experimental with the idea of what a "fight" could even be.
(the actual poker game starts at 11.45)

"The 75mm gun is firing. The 37mm gun is firing, but is traversed round the wrong way. The Browning is jammed. I am saying "Driver, advance." and the driver, who can't hear me, is reversing. And as I look over the top of the turret and see twelve enemy tanks fifty yards away, someone hands me a cheese sandwich."
How the hell could I forget Rei vs. Rao in the movie version of Fist of the North Star? I'd almost go with Rao vs. Ken, but the tone is pretty much that Rei KNOWS he's going to die, yet he fights anyway to buy Ken time to get there.

Well, yes, but it’s competing w/ the Princess Bride duel. Then again, people started adding in trash that is anime, and the thread took a nose dive.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
