This is by far the most British forum I subscribe to.
To British people, please explain, and if possible defend, the phenomenon observed below, repeated over and over again in the bulk of 70s and 80s video recordings of your finest rock bands playing to your wonderful youth live on TV, but noone at all dances beyond a little head bob.
Please, this mystery has baffled me my entire adult life.
Fair enough, but I'm not making this up out of thin cloth. It's like theres a great long stretch on British TV of these iconic genius-level musicians, like Joy Division and David Bowie and so forth, performing to a crowd that seems only mildly interested.
It's almost like they all seem like they are watching an exhibit at a museum.
No mal-intent here. MTV was certainly quirky as frack.

Well, a couple things-
1- there are actually a couple people dancing in that video (go to 3:00).
2- But, its New Order. If you for some reason feel that isn't an explanation, I suggest you dig a little deeper to various genres and bands.
3- the framing of the question is just plain weird. I went to a lot of shows in the States where nobody danced (because it wasn't that kind of place/band/music, or because it was a sports arena and there just wasn't room/wasn't safe- hurrah for stadium seating), and came across more dance clubs in my year in Britain than I did in 10 years stateside.
A lot comes down to the style of music and even the beat and tempo of particular songs. Some are for dancing, some are more for appreciating, others are more for delving into the lyrics.
Watching people try to dance to Ceremony is a painful and embarassing experience.

Oh I would dance to that gak. And it would be the worst thing anyone ever saw.
The individual at 3:00 is look like the exception that proves the rule, one might argue
Or perhaps in a many-worlds scenario, that actually is me dancing.
Anyway honestly I posted this just to poke a bit and try to have a little mutual laugh rather than a serious debate. I probably missed the mark as usual. Cheers.
I cant stomach most hip hop music, it's just not to my thing generally, but isnt Kanye West supposed to be one of the best hip hop guys in the current field?
I wouldn't know good hip hop from bad hip hop...the last hip hop artists I actually enjoyed were like Cypress Hill and Ice Cube and that was decades ago now at this point (tiny tear for getting old)

Ah. It came across as ignorant and insulting. 'You people, defend your behavior (or my misunderstanding thereof)' usually does.

The schoolmarm hath spoken.
I apologize for my inappropriate behavior, ma'am, and will get back to my cursive exercises immediately.

Oooooh that brings back memories of the now long gone country club on the way to Dorchester which wasn’t actually a country club at all, was just a below ground club beating out rave music and happy biscuits lol.

"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG
