Hi everyone,

I need to paint some more red terrain, and what you see in those pics took me almost an entire can of GW's Mephiston Red spray.

I have lots of red buildings to spray, and GW sprays tend to be a bit pricey. So, my question is this:

Is there a red spray that is the same as Mephiston Red made by someone else that doesn't charge an army and a leg for a simple rattlecan? Something that will take regular GW paints and washes over the top?

I'm in Australia if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

I always liked Army Painter sprays which are a little cheaper here, maybe not as cheap as you're aiming for though.

I don't know 100% that it's available in the Antipodes,or if it matches with Mephiston Red, but Rust-oleum do a cheap, decent Matte Red.

Red zinc primer looks like your pictures.

I had issues with AP dragon red primer, it laid so thick and the over spray was like red talcum powder

Maybe it was a bad can, I will have to buy another one to see though

My can of that from a few years back was the same. Really fast and light coats just about worked, but I was always worried about masking detail.

Yeah. Can recommend. I use Rustoleum 2x Cover. They make it in a ton of colors and the matte looks great. I use the black or charcoal as my normal base primer. I just recently got a green grass color for basecoating some board game tiles.

Re Army Painter, I've used three of their sprays and all three resulted in a 'gritty' texture on the minis.

It's possible this is through my fault, but it has never happened with the Rust-oleum sprays I use.

Do you have access to the new Vallejo Hobby Sprays? They might be an option.

Its about the same cost as GW primer colors though iirc.

Mephisto red seems close to a generic oxide red color.

dunno were you can get it down under but there should be options.

Yeah. Rustoleum or Krylon oxide red is probably the closest.

Not sure if either brand are sold down under but there might be similiar brands. Both are automotive/all purpose spray paints.

I dont know if it matters but there are definitely a ton of enamel based red oxides but i dont think they will work as nice at miniature scale. but they are cheap so maybe worth a test run.

Yep, Rustoleum is available here, from Bunnings. Is good stuff, although you do have to be careful not to spray to heavily, as out comes out in a thicker spray to model sprays.

Otherwise, Army Painter is good, but I think they're actually about the same price as GW's sprays...

I fully second Army Painter. If you can grab them with a bit of a discount, even better.

Try if you can to avoid the 2x coverage sprays from Rustoleum since they are designed to do a thicker coat.

For black I like either Krylons or Rustoleums line of camoflauge paints. It is a super matte black (almost primer matte), works on plastic without primer, and as long as you spray the recommended distance should not ever run or obscure details.

I live in MN and both of those spray wonderfully even in sub-zero temps.

Spray priming and painting are like airbrushing. Just gotta learn control.

I've been using Rustoleum sprays for a while now with excellent results.

Bunnings sell them for like 13 dollars a pop and they have a massive range. I actually have a can of their red that I got for some Ryza ruins. I just haven't used it yet.

Found this, which is nice. Seems Army Painter Dragon Red is the closest (little paler).

I wonder the Rustoleum stuff will work in its place. I just want the colour to be consistent with the current Ryza stuff I have, and the big AdMech buildings I need to paint.

Did see a fantastic tutorial yesterday on the Warcry ruins using Rustoleum stuff. Got a couple of sets of that I could try using their stuff.
