After a long hiatus from mini painting, I rediscovered some of my old pewter chaos models and decided to try getting back into painting.
This chaos champion, named Vangart Soulspiller according to the old catalogues, has an upside down skull on his belt - originally I thought it was supposed to be khorne's symbol, which is why he ended up red!

Pretty snazy.
And also pretty oldschool.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Great paint job, considering the model you're dealing with.

I always loved that buckle!

Thanks! Comfy footwear is a must when you're tromping through the chaos wastes.
Here is a second chaos warrior - I tried to paint a bloody handprint on his shield, but it is a bit hard to see on the black parts - what do you think?

he doesn't have a name in the catalogue, just a number, so on account of his shield I named him "togrim bloodshield".

Another warrior complete - Badbreath Blackbeard, Chaos Dwarf.
At first there were questions as to whether he could measure up to the other champions... His short temper proved to be an asset!

I think the bloody hand print came out well! And the chaos dwarf looks nice, though i always wondered if it would be uncomfortable to have a beard just coming out of your helmet like that

Thank you I guess a bushy dwarf beard has its pros and cons.

This chaos warrior is named Utokh Vilespike - a name that could refer to his kneepad, though his sinister bronze halberd seems more likely.

Nice. These are some of my favourite models. As are the Jes Goodwin chaos champions taht followed on their heels.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Thank you both! both of your blogs have lots of cool old models too

Here is a group shot of the champions so far:

First up is Vostnar Axelord: on this model, I tried some glazing on the reds - I think it is most visible on his big shoulderpad and his knees. I also tried some freehand on his face, which turned out a bit thick, and his shoulder, which I think looks better.
I always thought this model has a funny, hunched pose, like he is conspiring with his axe - maybe it is whispering in his ear

Next is Pinhead: despite being a chaos thug rather than a warrior or champion, I think he fits in pretty well. I struggled with painting the skin, but thankfully there isn't much of that on the other chaos warriors I have coming up. I wish I could have made his chain mail more interesting too, but wasn't sure how to... Maybe I will revisit this mini in the future. Do you have any favourite techniques or methods of adding character to chainmail?

Fun little guys! You can tell he's all about chaos, he's not even wearing pants: the ultimate chaos.

For the chainmail you can wash it with a black wash and then drybrush it with a lighter metallic colour. I use mithril silver (GW).
You might also drybrush some areas with a bronze paint to simulate rust. It's cold and wet in the far north and I doubt the warriors are taking good care of their weapons,,,

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

Thank you all for the feedback and thanks for the chain mail tip!

This next chaos warrior goes by Morlok Soul Reaper. I think a scythe is a strange weapon for a warrior to use - maybe he is a farmer who got tired of chopping wheat and decided to start chopping heads!
I tried to create some dripping blood from his weapon, using a piece of plastic blister pack and some mod podge. Next time I will have to cut the blister thinner though.

Love the scythe and the blood effects - most characterful and very befitting of a khornate-coloured warrior of chaos!

Old sculpts are looking really fantastic with your paint job, and thanks for sharing them

Next up is Adalbert Horner - a chaos champion who was in such a rush to get to the fight he forgot to put on one of his shoes!

Thank you! They are lots of fun to paint.

Here is Heiner Fiendlein - the most immodest champion in the warband. Like Adalbert before him, Heiner is missing some of his armor - but it is not his boot!

cheekiness aside, I tried some more freehand on this model. The flames on his shoulder are not as good as I hoped, painting them on to a curved surface was harder than I expected. I am pretty happy with the mark on his helmet, and also his tattoo!

I think you are being too hard on yourself, the flames look good.

If it helps, I have found for that style of flame you can get good effects by starting at the base, slowly pulling it into shape while also lifting the brush tip a little to reduce the area, ending with just the very tip (just the tip). A brush with a very good tip also helps here, like a W&N S7 #0.

These sculpts are really great, it is cool to see them. The no pants guy is my favorite, but one ass cheek out guy is a close contender.
