Nice write up, and obviously beautiful results. Two things I'd note. Primers. They are for getting a better adhesion between the miniature and the base coats. If you ever play with these (or when you paint your oop metals), you may just discover why this step is recommended. Basing. You may be able to get away with gluing the miniature directly to fine sand, but for less than fine sand - pinning would be stronger (and again, more useful for gaming and/or your metals). I thought this would be the case in regards to primers. What I normally do is cure the base coat with a hair dryer before applying more layers especially with more delicate paints. I don't know if this is a good remedy but it works with acrylic in other mediums.

Yes I agree pinning would be the best option. Two out of three (incl the one in the tutorial) I actually based with the mini glued on to the base. It was after that I realised the one I glued right on looks a million times better.
