hi guys, bell of lost souls seems to be trying to scam you out of $9.99 in order to even look at the damn page! anyone else got this?
Ive noticed that the ads over the last month have been more and more intrusive and now this "subscribe for no adds" popup is coming up every time I log on and i've no idea why it wont let you do anything else.

it says subscribe for no adds but theres not even a no-thanks i'll stick tot he adds option. just subscribe or the endless popup. broken?

Looks that way - even the homepage is popping up saying members only.

Weird headlines, massive amounts of click bait, claims “proof” of upcoming things yet all are based on old rumours (90% of which never happen)
On top of that’s they are also insane biased towards groups.
Add in that they would sell their own souls for £1 and that’s what you get.

This happens when a company gets locked into a train of thought and lacks any idea of how to break out of it whilst their finances are going down. They end up doubling up and then tripling up on what worked "before" and eventually they end up with a monster that's built around getting in money, but becaues its driving away customers they are still getting less and less. They last out because loyal fans stick it out, but often end up drifting away too.

You see the same thing with some MMO games and such when their subscription services start offering less and you get more and more micro costs slipping in etc... It's often a death-throw because its very hard to recover from that approach - once you're driving away new and existing customers/fans then recovery gets hard. Those people lost drift to other services and its darn hard to get them back.



I suspect BOLS had glitched part of their site code since a subscribe option shouldn't be appearing just to view the main page. I'd rank that as a mistake. However it might be that they are going to lock all their articles behind it.

Doesn’t help the managed to kill their forums by sucking up to the Trolls.

Someone spouting obscene far right rhetoric gets reported? Ban the reporter.

Someone derailing each and every thread because of another posters gender? Ban the poster that’s being targeted.

I stopped going to BOLS when one adblocker wasn't enough to stop the popups.

Once again proof that Bill Maher war right: Capitalism eats everything.

Then again GW was once upon a time a company of gamers that were bout gamers having fun. They encouraged people to make their own stuff, they wrote articles about how you could make your own ork vehicles, or make a tank out of a deodorant container.

Then they caught lightning in a bottle with the idea for the wh40k setting. Soon the capitalists moved in.

Now GW is all about the green. Rules aren't about fun gaming, they're about $$$.

So now a major 40k site has turned into another grasping corporate hand reaching for 40k players wallets. Sad, but not surprising.

Currently reading through the books for RT, and I’m afraid I must disagree.

The vehicle rules presented in The Compendium are really quite complex. To the point I’m having to read them in tranches.

Now, complexity is not a bad thing. But as 40k grew, so did collections. The writer’s found the games they were playing bobbing down. And received feedback to the same.

Couple of years later (may have been less), they’re overhauled again into The Vehicle Manual. This drastically reduced the farting around, and would see mild adaptation into 2nd Ed (Datafaxes and hit locations simplified, the rest from memory survived untouched).

We saw much the same with 3rd Ed, as the rules were stripped back (too far in my opinion) again to allow people to play with their ever growing collections all at once.

The actual release template of regular updates have mostly just changed format from WD articles to bound volumes.

Sad thing is that if you search you actually get several threads - some from 5 years ago on dakka - which say the same thing. BOLS has been like this for a good long while. They've clearly found their niche, its just arguably nota good one.

There's a good reason why they're known as Taco Bell of Lost Souls. Not worth the time to go there and if you do you get cheap and crappy content.

Also a good chance of picking up a virus.

Yeah, but taco bell still serves a purpose.
It get you food.
you get nothing from Bell of Banner Ads that you cant get somewhere else wit the same amount of effort.

Odd, I got banned from the BoLS forums for not bending the knee to a far-left personality. But to be fair, she did get banned a few days later. Oh the joys of being called every name in the book for pointing out double standards.

I remember like a single poster on their forum that like.......all the guys sucked up too for like, some reason, i think hoping to get with her.
