Today, Disney+ ordered its next animated series from Lucasfilm, Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Fresh off of the critically-acclaimed series finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Disney+ original series will premiere on the streaming service in 2021.

The series follows the elite and experimental clones of the Bad Batch (first introduced in The Clone Wars) as they find their way in a rapidly changing galaxy in the immediate aftermath of the Clone War. Members of Bad Batch — a unique squad of clones who vary genetically from their brothers in the Clone Army — each possess a singular exceptional skill, which makes them extraordinarily effective soldiers and a formidable crew. In the post-Clone War era, they will take on daring mercenary missions as they struggle to stay afloat and find new purpose.

“Giving new and existing fans the final chapter of Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been our honor at Disney+, and we are overjoyed by the global response to this landmark series,” said Agnes Chu, senior vice president, Content, Disney+. “While The Clone Wars may have come to its conclusion, our partnership with the groundbreaking storytellers and artists at Lucasfilm Animation is only beginning. We are thrilled to bring Dave Filoni’s vision to life through the next adventures of the Bad Batch.”

Star Wars: The Bad Batch is executive produced by Dave Filoni (The Mandalorian, Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Athena Portillo (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels), Brad Rau (Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars Resistance) and Jennifer Corbett (Star Wars Resistance, NCIS) with Carrie Beck (The Mandalorian, Star Wars Rebels) as co-executive producer and Josh Rimes as producer (Star Wars Resistance). Rau is also serving as supervising director with Corbett as head writer.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Wasn’t a huge fan of the Bad Batch arc. I’ll still probably watch this, as The Boy enjoyed them and it’s something we can do together.

So, is this basically The A-Team in Star Wars? It’s not the worst idea DisneyWars has had lately.

I thought the Bad Batch was the weakest part of Clone Wars season 7, but I think that's mostly because the episodes were set up in a way that they had to compete with characters built up over six seasons that we have seen succeed against similar odds without the help of a funky array of specialists, which made the use of the Bad Batch a bit jarring in my mind. On their own, as stars of their own show, they could be a lot of fun.

If the show maintains the quality of Clone Wars and Rebels, I'm sure I'll at the very least appreciate it for the view at the immediate post Episode 3 setting it'll present. Sounds cool to me.

Agreed that the bad batch was kind of a lacklustre arc in S7, (though at least it was better than the Ahsoka's pre-Mandalore arc of having to deal with Twiddle Dee and Tweedle Dum in Coruscant), we'll see how they stand on their own without being outshown by existing characters.

The bigger question is why they don't still work for the Empire (assuming their chips work) and if they had to fight their way out as fugitives.

If I remember correctly they weren't great at following orders, weren't sure how exactly they fit into the structure of the army of the Republic and saw their job as being all about scrapping droids. I imagine Clone Wars already laid the foundation for Order 66 not sitting well with them.

Clones are supposed to be obedient, except these aren't your typical clones, and while the chip seems to impress an overwhelming compulsion to do something on the owner, its control is not absolute. There's no telling if it would strongly affect defective clones, and I expect that will be the premise of the show.

The Bad Batch struck me as being very toyetique, so not too, too impressed with them getting a show.

But it seems set in the Dark Times between Revenge and Hope and that's an era I always wanted to see more of.

Every time this thread pops up I misread it as Star Wars: Bad Touch. And now I have that song stuck in my head again.
