I'm not sure about these, they seem to just be skorpekh destroyers that can DS. Are they really that necessary? I'm almost surprised that GW made them as i'd almost expect them to say if you need to DS skorpekhs use a night scythe or monolith.

Yes, true. But unless they have something special i just don;t see them now as that different that skropekhs, and frankly i think like skorpekhs better in terms of looks. I also wonder if these get a lord version?

GW releasing models that preform a role done by already existing units do in a mediocre way? Imagine my shock.

I hoping they're a duel kit with skorpekhs and I can magnetize them at the waist.

I don't see that happening. Too much of the models are not interchangeable.

If you think Ophydian destroyers are just bad Skorpekh destroyers, you must not have seen their datasheet.
These guys are much deadlier to less resilient units with their additional attacks while trading raw defense (lower T & Sv) to gain speed, native deep strike, and a -1 to be Hit in Melee combat.

Which is better? Time will tell. I suspect in the right hands, the Ophydian might be the better unit.

We'll know more once we know what, exactly, RP and Living metal do in the new codex, since they have both.
Skorpekhs have a better statline, but don't have LM.

Same. The torsos are somewhat different (though not significantly so beyond the additional space for the extra arms), but the arm assemblies are completely different.

Theres no real way to tell how any necron infantry unit will preform till we see the rules for Living Metal and RP and their points.

Skorpekh's don't have Living Metal yet. I think Edge of Silence has shown that basically any of the datasheets in there were temporary and not indicative of final rules.

It seems that all of the multi-wound models are likely to get Living Metal.

When those models are called retro while I still consider them normal wraiths, I know I've done more than my time already

Yeah, this are better at GEQ shredding. Not so good at MEQs.

Still, even GEQs will wound them enough in large numbers.

Those ophydian destroyers will die to a soft breeze, unless they get an inv. When you deepstrike them they have to make that 9" charge, and you cant give them a charge reroll and 5+ inv with the chronomancer, because that happens in the command phase. So they must start on the table, which means they get deleted before they charge anything. Another useless melee unit.

Well in all fairness the -1 to be hit due to whipcoil bodies will help them survive close combat with like GEQ troops a lot. The rules on how many attackes they can get seem a little unclear, someone did explain it to me.

The -1 to hit in melee doesnt help when they get shot off the table from far away.

Pssst, don't tell anybody, but you can bring more than a single min-sized squad of something, if you worry about it being shot off the board instantly.

Problem is one of the two will be inferior and ignored.

With t4 3+ w2 being baseline you need to kill odds are these.

Yes, i can spend ~210 pts. on 6 of them which then will die to marine bolter fire before they get even close.

If you bring 90 Warriors and one unit of a fast moving, lightly armoured melee threat, which unit will the opposing army most likely shoot off the board first?

If you bring 40 Warriors, some Wraiths, some Ophydian destroyers, that shooty spider hero, some good firepower, some resilient objective holder, what will be shot off first now?

Y'all acting like you've never seen a melee combat in this edition happening. :p

They get 3 attacks base. These can be made with any weapon they are equipped with.

Regardless of what weapon they attack with, you then get 1 extra attack with the Threshers and 2 extra with the Claws.

Yes, they're retro and I say that having played since before Necrons were even an army.

To be fair we don't have ALL the rules available. They might have something like Wraiths where they can traverse over terrain, which is a decent niche for a unit that can get more buffs compared to Wraiths. HOWEVER that's looking more unlikely.

The best State-Texas

Over on the Necrontyr discord, we've done a lot of the math involved with these.

Right now, they are extremely killy, more so than most of our other units by a pretty significant margin. The problem being their durability and getting them into combat.

We have a couple of ways to address that

1. Keep them out of LoS turn 1. With a M10 and advance, you have a pretty good chance of positioning them for a turn 2 charge. They can also benefit from the Chronometron this way.
2. Novokh and deepstrike. with the +1 to charge, you have something like a 40% charge with one roll, and something like a 65% With a command reroll to make the charge right out of deepstrike. Not great, but not terrible odds.
3. New Reanimation protocols helps with keeping a few alive to get stuck in.

One thing is certain is these cannot be ignored. If even a few get into close combat they are likely going to cause a significant amount of damage to most targets, and with the new RP you likely have to put in more dedicated shooting to finish them off in one go. I.E. Splitting fire with a HB at them and the rest of the shots into something else isn't going to work out as well.

They appear to be around 30 pts each, which for is pretty good.

Killing ability isn't the problem though, as otherwise people would like Flayed Ones a lot more (rerolling to wound does a lot for your damage output after all).
