So, a while ago I hosted an Epic
40k demo game for my friends, and we played Gogard's last stand for multiple reasons, not the least because I actually had minis and scenery enough to play it ^_^
REFIGHT 1: GOGARGD'S LAST STAND!
Waaa-Gogard started on Guilus II, an inhospitable planet on the very edge of Imperial space. The orks who inhabited the planet constantly battled with each other for territory and teeth. From the anarchy one ork rose to power. Gork and Mork had found a new champion and Waaa-Gogard had begun.
The power of Waaa-Gogard quickly spread across the planet: Mekboyz started to build gargants and other engines of war, and the orks flocked to Gogard's banner. The power of the Waaagh gre until Gogard had no other choice but to invade the stars and, as if sent by the gods, a huge space hulk drifted into the system and was caught by the mekboyz' powerful traktor beams.
The first planet to be found by the orks was Balle Alpha. The space hulk was detected by the planetary defense force as it started to maneuver towards the planet. The imperial governor wisely readied his forces and sent a message to neighboring worlds asking for reinforcements.
Gogard planned to attack the largest group of cities he could find ans cripple the planet's defenses in one stroke. Mighty gargants moves across the planet's deserts leaving trails of destruction in their wake, smashing the forces sent to stop them. Battlewagons followed behind, mopping up any opposition that survived the war engines' attacks. When the orks reached the cities, however, the wave of destruction stopped. The city walls of Balle Alpha were well reinforced and halted the ork attack with minimal losses. The orks regrouped and started to barrage the cities with salvos of fire from their gargants.
Days later, just as the walls looked to be on the verge of collapsing, the reinforcements the planetary governor had called for arrived in the form of the Silver Skulls. Gogard's army was trapped between the city walls and the attacking space marines and suffered hideous losses. Some boyz managed to breach the city but were killed by the massed firepower of its defenders. The orks were quickly defeated, but Gogard himself managed to break out of the trap and smash through the space marines' line in his great gargant. Many orks tried to follow their warboss, but only a few succeeded, and Waaa-Gogard was effectively destroyed. The Silver Skulls formed a line around the city to prevent and ork counterattack while the fortifications were repaired.
Gogard stopped his retreat when he saw no imperial troops pursuing him. Determined to exact revenge on the hated pointy noses, Gogard rallied his remaining boyz and re-boarded his trusty gargant "Korps Grinda". With his new crew he set off towards the space marines' positions intent on inflicting as much damage as possible.
FORCES
Orks: The ork player had one detachment:
Korps Grinda, a great gargant!
Space Marines: The space marines had the following detachments:
Detachment 1: Force Citus, comprising four Land Raiders
Detachment 2: Force Adonis, comprising one space marine captain and two devastator units
Detachment 3: Force Lentus, comprising one space marine captain in a Rhino and three tactical squads in Rhinos
SET-UP
The terrain was set up as shown in the photo, following the guidelines of the scenario. The space marines players set up first and deployed one detachment on the table, touching the ruined buildings by the "y" junction. The remaining detachments would enter anywhere along the space marines' table edge on the first turn of the battle. The entry point is marked now using the
HQ unit of each detachment.
The ork player set up Korpse Grinda within 20cm of his table edge:
General layout:
The space marines' players decided to deploy Force Adonis inside the ruins around the junction:
The view is not really great...
Gogard,
OTOH, feels that his odds are good so far:

TURN 1
While Gogard decides to
advance with Korpse Grinda so as to have Force Adonis near enough to blast them and captain Adonis issues
overwatch orders, forces Citus and Lentus enter the battle on
assault orders.
The troops of captain Adonis open fire on Korpse Grinda, managing to short out half of the great gargant's force fields. Korpse Grinda then unleashes the full firepower of its weapons on the hunkered down troops of Force Adonis, managing to erradicate completely half of a devastator squad and blasting the ruins.

TURN 2
Gogard is approaching the battered astartes of Force Adonis and he has drawn first blood, even though Korpse Grinda has lost half its shields, so he decides to press the advantage. Meanwhile, the space marines captains decide that their odds are good and they issue the same orders they did last turn:
The astartes open fire, and a hail of bolter rounds, las cannons and missiles converge on Korpse Grinda's shields... and the shields crumble down, and the titanical gargang is peppered by explosions.
Gogard, with Korpse Grinda on fire and his boyz dying in droves around him, bellows a challenge while presses the RED BUTTON OF ALL
DA WEAPONZ and aims towards the silver marines. The return fire decimates Force Lentus' squads. After the dust settles, almost half the battle brothers under captain Lentus' progenoids will be harvested.
The amount of firepower that a half-dead gargant managed to unleash gave the astartes captains pause, though... but their forces had their orders, and they assaulted the metal beast on fire.
Still... a Great Gargant is a force unto itself, and the beast held fast the assault. The space marines were forced to retreat.

TURN 3
The Angels of Death don't flee, though, they only retreat to better positions, and that's what they did: cut their losses and go back into the fray:
This time, however, Force Citus was near enough to add its full firepower to the attack, and the surviving troops of forces Adonis and Lentus took a kneed and trained their weapons. Pierced by thousands of bolt rounds, shattered by las bolts and blown apart by missile rounds, Korpse Grinda finally exploded in a shower of sparks:
And that, as they say, was that. Hope you liked it!
