I've got a Chaplain Tarentus on the way and a load of marines with rosarius awaiting scribble. I've tried with a brush but I've no magnification and the results so far are poor. Is there any kind of artists pen I can use for my banners, scrolls, etc?

TIA

I like the 01 and 02 micron pens.

Only note is that mine seem to dry out pretty quickly, or perhaps I store them poorly.

I'll second the micron pens being brought up here - I think they're great for parchment text - I'd reccommend you practice a little to get your hand in.

If you're feeling brave, or wanna try a colour that isn't red, black or brown (my go to colours for a Sakura Pigma Micron pen), I have a Tamiya brush with an ultra-fine tip that does script pretty nicely - if you're interested I'll check the name when I get home.

Its very easy to make it look really bad, so for the most part I leave mine blank with just a wash, if the paper is larger, I use a suitable text decal.

If you can pick up some Edding 1800 profipens, they do a good job if you go for the 0.1mm nibs. I have a few for geological mapping but they do a great job of fine lining purity seal parchment.

They are a bit pricey, but they last years and the 0.1 nib is a good scale for space marines.

How well does the ink on these pens wear? Presumably you need to varnish afterwards?

Varnishing is recommended, although if you aren't actively picking up models by their purity seals you should be grand.

Perhaps I'm not using them correctly, but I didn't find pigment pens (Sakura Micron) to be as excellent as is often said. For context, I was using them to draw polynesian patterns (lots of swirls and fine lines) on some Carcharadons Space Marines. The nibs were a little hard to use on curved surfaces, but the brush nib (being soft foam) was a marked improvement. The main problem was that I found they wiped off easily. I thought to rectify this with varnish - but the varnish caused them to run/blot (Which I had thought was impossible as they are intended to be water insoluble). I've yet to try a spray varnish from my airbrush, which may solve this issue.

So, basically I'm saying - get the brush nib IMHO as it's better suited to the surface, be cautious about handling any penned surface and if you are going to try varnish, perhaps use spray and certainly do a test model first. But I stress - perhaps I am using these incorrectly.

it sounds odd, but 0.1mm is still too thick. Try a mapping pen & brown ink.
I did this with black & so looks too stark.

mapping pen:

the nibs are very delicate so you'll probably run through them quickly.

Sakura Micron 005 pens are also great for eyes and blacklining. However, they clog, so it might be a better idea to invest in a nib that lasts a long time.

You're going to want acrylic inks, particularly black and brown, anyway, to make your own Les Bursley washes and whatnot. Or buy a set of Liquitex Inks and use the inks as thinner and paint.

to be honest, the link is just to show what a mapping pen is. I got mine from various art shops.
