So acocrding to this the daleks are getting a revamp in the new christmas special.

Supposedly a new origin story and a new look.

https://screenrant.com/doctor-who-dalek-origin-story-2020-holiday-special/

Here's the new look.

Personally I think the best looking daleks are the bronze ones introduced in the reboot. They looked tough and heavy. Yes they had the plungers, but they overall looked more plausible as war machines.

Then came the night morphin' power daleks with looked like plastic, but had an intriguing design idea that implied they could all switch out their appendages with other ones stored in the main body. But they looked like toys, not war machines.

Then last year we got the junkyard dalek who looked like a dalek with anorexia and had a glowing head.

Now the new daleks look like the junkyard dalek with a paintjob and polish.I think maybe getting rid of the 'cage" under the top of the head might be a good idea as it was there so the actor inside could see out of the dalek costume, or should i call it a prop?

I'd have liked to see the new paradigm daleks use their limb swap ability ones in a while, but the design was apparently rejected before that happened. it was a hell of a good idea that didn't get a chance to be used. I'm also kind of sad to see the idea of what the "eternal" dalek caste was and what it did may never be developed, i was curious, there might have been room for interesting stories there.

The one thing i really don't like is a new origin for daleks. I think this can't go good because the original story is very long established canon and does not need a change, davros was just fine as the originator of the daleks.

I never really had a problem with the daleks, i got what they were supposed to be: A dalek is an advanced tech armored combat vehicle meant to house and support one occupant who is genetically engineered to live its whole life inside the vehicle. It's shaped the way it is because daleks primarily hunt and kill humanoids hence they are shaped in such a way as to make it easier to enter humanoid made area to hunt and kill humans.

The new look has me leery, the idea of redoing their origin really has me worried but i'll give the christmas special a fair viewing before i judge it. Let's say i'm less than optimistic right now.

Looks like a JJ Abrams reboot Dalek.

I think most of it is fine. The electric choker is a bit weird, though.

Christmas episode with Daleks is a bit.. on the nose. Have they been avoiding Daleks in the latest Who? I kind of lost interest with the previous Doctor, and the evil blue teeth guys didn't sell me on the current stuff.

Ok, again I'm kind of ok with eliminating the cage below the head as it was clearly to let the actor see and breath. Maybe the new ones are remote controlled mode' that don't need an actor (Driver?) so don't need it.

Edit: Yes, the scrapyard dalek last year was remote controlled, as apparently are the newest ones. https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/doctor-who-a-history-of-dalek-redesigns-and-fan-reactions/

I'd guess the new design allows the head and upper section with the arm/gun to rotate independent of the lower body. Maybe a good move as the dalek might be able to move in one direction, fire in another and look at a different direction.

The glowey bits, i may have assumed they were shield generators but they seem to change color when the dalek goes evil. So the shield emitter theory may be a wash. Too bad, the idea of the 'head" with the organism in it having shielding kinda made sense.

Now as to a new origin, ok that may actually not be a colossal fethup after all, it looks from the below like these might be a new strain of dalek created on earth by an evil (And, of course, american) businessman. (Honestly i get a little tired of there being no good american characters on dr. who played by american actors.)

So these daleks may be sort of like the cybus cybermen that don't really replace the mondas ones but are a new type of dalek originated on earth with dalek tech and maybe dna. (Yeah, nothing could possibly go wrong with that, huh? )

Then again it could lead to another dalek civil war, which seems to happen now and then. They had one near the end of the old series with davros creating new daleks and the old ones coming to hunt them for not being dalek enough, and the new paradigm daleks not being recognized as daleks by the genesis ark, until the doctor called them daleks at which it created the new paradigm daleks with promptly exterminated the originals as 'inferior".

A storyline with a dalek civil war could make for a decent season.

No doubt they'll lose to some nonsense of other as always because they are deeply stupid baddies even by teatime telly standards going so far as to murder one of their own for suggesting not being dumb

I’m definitely interested. However, some misgivings about a new origin, simply because Daleks are Daleks, and their origins covered in the sublime Genesis of the Daleks.

Inevitable creation thing is already covered by the Cybermen, so I don’t feel the Daleks need follow suit. And if it’s just the Daleks pretending? We’ve had that before (Victory and Power).

I will of course watch it, because I love Dr Who, and it’s always fun to watch the Sad Acts commenting when it’s clear they didn’t even watch it.

I quite like the new look of the Dalek, seems like a rather natural progression from the bronze design in the reboot.

A new origin story seems odd, however is they have been reverse-engineered from the scrap Dalek last season that would be something I would be very interesed in!

Looking forward to the episode in any case, this season was miles better than the one that preceeded it, Fugitive of the Judoon is up there as one of my faves so hopefully the trend continues..
