Sorry I couldn’t think of a better title. There’s definitely a better title out there, but sadly Mr Brain is in a big old huff after spending 4-5 hours riddling out the errors of others today, and has hence nicked off to his fart sack, refusing to properly contribute. Poor Mr Brain.
Anyways. We have music threads, but I don’t think we have a thread covering truly worthy Cover Versions.
Now….how to define a Cover? I personally don’t count remixes, because I consider them creatively bankrupt. But this thread isn’t about my musical taste, it’s about everyone’s, so remixes count and are allowed.
Then?…..how to define “worthy” songs. Again I’ll let you, Dear Dakkanauts decide that for yourself. It could be a cover or remix you enjoy of an original you have no taste for. It could be something you find highly amusing (such as Weird Al), or the only way you can tolerate the original song, or one which in its way fundamentally changes the meaning of the song (except Diddy’s “missing you” which is crap, and will not be allowed, on account it was a low rent cash in on his mate’s tragic death)
Depeche Mode’s Enjoy The Silence, remixed by, I believe (do correct me if I’m wrong) Linkin Park. The heavier sound just suits the lyrics. Perhaps a good chunk is me as a wee Grot and my unstable emotional position at the time. But it still kicks arse!

Metallica's cover of Thin Lizzy's version of Whiskey in the Jar (even though I don't like the change to the story)
Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence is pretty great.
Five Finger Death Punch did a great version of Blue on Black.
Most versions of House of the Rising Sun are pretty good. In the Air Tonight also has several great covers.
Penatonix and Straight No Chaser have a bunch of great covers in general.
Beyond Last Kiss, Pearl Jam has tons and tons of great covers. They like to slip them in the outro of Daughter, but there's tons of them. Rockin' in the Free World probably gets the most separate play. Way back when there's a great version of Dock of the Bay.
Frankie goes to hollywood's power of Love by Gabrielle Aplin. Used for John Lewis a few years back and hauntingly beautiful. I used it as a lullaby for my kids for years.
Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence is pretty great.
Ha! Glad I’m not the only one. I like how the tone of the Disturbed cover seems to convey a sense of frustrated desperation, instead of trying to replicate the haunting quiet from the original. It’s like the Shining, in which both emphasize different aspects to be unique to each other.
Also, goodness gracious. I did not know the band’s vocalist had that kind of range.
Whoever covered Toto’s Africa last year…I’m just kidding. That was awful.
Weezer! No idea what they were thinking with that one. It's not as good as the original, and not different enough to be interesting.
That was last year?!? Could have sworn I remembered hearing that cover almost a decade ago. Has that same boy band kind of sound to it. I agree though, it was... not the best cover I’ve heard.

Generally speaking, a lot of terrible pop tunes are mostly marred by overly produced performances. They're largely written by extremely talented people and are pretty fantastic when covered by other musicians. Even some of the original artists do them better later on when they're no longer bogged down by produces trying to "perfect" things.
The best example of this in my mind is probably the Local H cover of Toxic. That song, on a real guitar, is pretty killer.

Goodness, right. Didn't know until years later that it was originally a Nine Inch Nails song of all things. Usually the covers seem to go the other way around!
