Anyone else disappointed that the HH from Black Library and Forgeworld has been going on for over a decade and we still haven't gotten a single model for the Thunder Warriors with the line (at least for BL) coming to a close? I didn't expect a full unit as they were wiped out almost completely at the end of the Unification Wars pre-Heresy but I'd hoped that we'd get 1-3 models of survivor/characters. Any chance of them coming out of the sewers under the Imperial Palace/GW HQ for the final battle? I haven't followed the HH previews closely but figured I'd ask just in case. Have we even gotten new sources of official art for them? Who wouldn't want to see these charming fellows in official GW art and plastic instead of fanart?

There's no game set on Terra during the Unification and the Thunder Warriors were exterminated by the Dark Angels prior to the Reclamation of Sol.
There hasn't been a reason to make any. As far as anyone knows, a single Warrior survived the purge into the Heresy but was very deliberately hiding from the Imperium because they would kill him.

At least a half dozen survived into the HH era going off of the wiki.

Obviously, a simple stroke of the proverbial pen at FW/BL could add more. That low number is why I mentioned a single model or small unit of characters as I understand they're not common by aby means. I don't see GW ever making a Warhammer 29k game so the wrapping up HH seems to be the final chance with such chaos (figuratively and literally) on Terra with Horus' final assault. Btw, it's completely reasonable to disagree as they're obviously not the focus of the era/game. I'm just hoping they don't pass up the opportunity.

I too would be interested in seeing Thunder Warriors on the tabletop, even if their rules were only for a narrative play. If I remember my lore right, wasn't a very small group of them hiding on Earth for hundreds of years (thousands?), using stolen tech to help stop their degradation? They really don't like the Imperium and hold a grudge about it. I don't know, but I could see them seeing the assault on Terra and saying "Hell with it, may as well join the enemy of my enemy."

The thunder warrior model is gone now. But he was available on GW website for a long time. In a novelty power armour through the ages sett. (I mean up until perhaps 2017 or something.) But that is not what you are asking for though. You want rule support.

I think Thunder Warriors are awesome and a game set in the Unification era would be great fun. It's such a colorful, weird setting.

There was a FB group devoted to that setting. I think it's still active. People have posted TW conversions there, IIRC. Might want to check it out.

Indeed. I was hoping for a more modern post RT era take though. Styles have changed since then obviously.

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that particular one. I've seen conversions with everything from ogryn to stormcast eternals to marine bits but they just don't seem right. I have full faith in talented sculptors (both digital and physical) making awesome models once GW gives us modern art to work from but they haven't yet. Some old Blanche stuff that is very stylized (and now outdated regardless of whether some one is a fan of his particular style) but nothing newer. I bought the old Visions of the HH book years ago because it had a ton of art from the older books and card games of the HH specifically to see those awesome versions of the 40k familiar stuff and would love to see just a few pieces of art for the Thunder Warriors as well. Obviously this was before the HH books and models from FW.

You dont see them because canonically even if they did survive they would be horribly mutated and corrupted by this point.

The thunderwarriors were not genetically stable, this was covered in one of the HH books, i dont recall which one, but it had to do with a gang being lead by a thunder warrior that had some how survived. The problem was his genetics were all screwed up and he was trying to get gnene seed in an attempt to stabilize himself.

So, the reason you dont see them is because they just dont exist is a stable form.

To many unpainted models to count.

Warboss - not official I'm afraid, but if you are just after some cool looking minis check out the FB group 'The Unification Wars'

There is some absolutely amazing stuff coming through 3d print designers at the moment, some files already available and also some Kickstarters either in progress or planned. Also, Tortuga Bay Studio do a nice line of minis which you can buy directly.

I just joined the FB group a few days ago - I had no idea that the unification era community was so sizeable and producing such awesome stuff!

Thanks. I'll take a look both at the Unification Wars and Tortuga as I wasn't familiar with either. I was just hoping for an "official" interpretation. Gw comes up with some goofy poses and stinker models on occasion but I'm a big fan of the original HH look they came up with (even the outdated 40k stuff that they retro-adapted back into 30k).

Yup and that's why BL keeps coming up with exceptions to the general rule. I was just hoping that FW would do the same just once!

NP mate, there is definitely some good stuff on there worth checking out.

As to FW turning their hand to unification-era, I think it's hard to say how likely this is. If you remember with the Heresy era stuff, there was a long time when they just didn't seem to realise how big the pre-heresy community was becoming and how many fans wanted it. There were quite a few years of fans just doing their own conversions of entire armies, even events with hundreds of people in Warhammer World, and with no official support at that point. I'm not sure what the cutoff point was of them realising there was money to be made, "why are so many of these Red Scorpion MkIV upgrade sets selling?", then Alan Bligh getting to write the Heresy books and the miniatures that came along with it.

Perhaps Unification-era needs something similar? Either some Black Library books showing some of the campaigns in more detail, or perhaps a 'unification era' armour upgrade set. If those sold in piles then FW might realise there is money to make? Also if it were to go any further, sadly it probably needs another Alan Bligh; someone with the passion to want to produce the books and make the projects, and to lead in that area.

Yeah, that's odd. I remember people paying high bits prices for Mk II-IV bits on the secondary market and making decidely monotonous looking armies reusing over and over the same models/pieces/poses.

I've seen some 3d models in the past (both free and paid) but nothing that really caught my eye. That's partly why I was hoping for the official take for at least one character.

It's actually a good surprise that GW didn't notice this obvious and easy cash grab / golden goose and didn't go full gas into unification wars. Or maybe it just doesn't want to, idk

I wonder if the Unifcation Wars will be the next HH now that the latter's itch has been thoroughly scratched for over a decade... the thing with little info that FW can develop on their own. Truscale pretty much died with Primaris as well.

EH i doubt it, i think if anything the next "itch" they are gonna scratch is post HH rules which, will basically just be HH rules but with xenos as well.

So basically 7.5e.

Which i mean, hey, im not against at all.

I would love a Warhammer 28-29k game with Thunder Warriors, Mark 2 Marines, techno savages, rogue psykers, genetic horrors and the like.

I just read the Valdor novel (spoilers Valdor is like not even one of the top 5 most important characters in it) and it's entire set in that era.

I think the appeal is that Earth is well, the only planet I have an emotional attachment to and a battle in the streets of Hy Brazil or Hind just means more to me that one in Warzone Omicrom Percy I-8.

Same, Warhammer 28-29k would be great. I've been working on a mk2 only marine army just to try to approach that early early crusade / pre-primarchs / unification vibe.

I think a unification war would be interesting, at least as a set of rule subsets, or a specialist games. I don't know if it would be viable as a full blown follow-up to HH

I think it could take a few years to flesh out with maybe a couple of books but nothing like the dozens of books (between army list reprints and actual campaign books) and decade plus the HH took. Ultimately it is just one planet... the single most important planet in the Imperium but still just one.

I mean, even if they did make rules for a Thunder Warrior character, what faction would it be for?

We don't really have a human renegade/mercenary faction they could slip a Thunder Warrior into. They'd be more suitable as an RPG NPC than table top rules for a wargame. You'd really need a whole Thunder Warrior faction to justify tabletop rules.

I could see them being an addition to the Black Shields. Whether still loyal to the Emperor and trying to die a noble death in his name or fighting against him in an attempt to curry favor with the Warmaster, either one is possible and sounds like a good fit.

Warhammer 20K is something I'd like to actually see. Having Techno-Barbarians vs The Fledgling Empire would be amazing. The descriptions of some of the battles that were in the Last Church book were wonderful, and they name dropped all these cool sounding locations like "Nordridic Conclaves" and "The Cities of the Crystal Seas."

So I'd buy that if it was a game.

Well then I guess we need a human renegade/mercenary faction don't we?

Logically if the Emperor could make T Warriors out of whatever scraps of technology he could find in the ruins of Earth you'd expect the technology could be reproduced elsewhere across the galaxy. So call the unit 'Enhanced Warriors' and note in the fluff that they are said to resemble the legendary Thunder Warriors of the Unification Wars.

M4, S5, T5, Sv4+ and some sort of chance of a catastrophic gene failure/sudden death (failed morale check=remove one model) and you have something cool that's not just marines with a different hat.

Valdor was a great novella. I really enjoyed it.

I don't have faith in GW doing the unification wars justice. It would take a individual like Mr Bligh to come along again, and he was a once in a life time kind of creative mind. I loved his Badab war IA books and the style of writing. The early Heresy stuff from GW followed that. Now its just marketing telling the studio what to make and getting FW to do it.

FW used to seem like it was its own little playground, and Mr Cotrell and Mr Bligh used to know how to 'play the game' to basically keep FW away from the dreaded middle management syndrome.

His passing derailed FW and it looks like they totally got swept up into the 'specialist game' catagory that they are in now a days. Long gone are the passion projects and models. Like the studio of old when Jes would come in from a weekend with a sculpted goblin with a metal ball and chain.

I really miss Old FW so much. The nail in the coffin was the 'regional pricing' that totally saved you money and made shipping easier just like the official GW marketing dept memo said.

Blacksheilds.
The fluff for the 'faction' leaves room for any flavour of grey in the leadership position - even their canonical gear is unsanctioned modifications of imperial tech mixed with alien/warp affected assets.
Not too big a leap to have those rules represent 'unfinished' or 'under-developed' pre-imperium weapons.

Facebook images don't work as hotlinks so I'll attach him here.

It's interesting to see, opens questions about when did the Necrons awaken and when they visited Earth. But I think the real mystery here is what kind of mousse did the T Warriors use to keep their plumes up? 10,000 years later and it still has rich body and flowing curves.
