Hi all
It's August - has been for a week, derp - which means that the Great Wargaming Survey returns. Both taking the survey and spreading the news is much appreciated. Some balance to the many 'hardcore history'-types is always required. Published results of all previous surveys can be found at the WSS blog: https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/blogs/great-wargaming-survey-blog-wss-magazine

Submitted my response. The questions still seem to be poorly designed and worded.

“Poorly designed and worded” is fortunately not a common complaint, but we’re always eager to take feedback on board. Feel free to PM suggestions for improvements.

Filled in. Overall not a bad survey (I've seen far worse!) Some questions are a bit limited on available answers or need an other section as a few I felt I couldn't answer honestly or was lead into a particular answer.

Complete. The survey has greatly improved from previous years.

This is what I meant. Perhaps “poorly worded…” was a bit much, but there were many questions where I felt I was giving the most honest answer I could and also being misleading because the questions do not allow for wargames hobbying outside a narrow window.

Thanks for the feedback. We probably have easy of analysis and completion competing with all the possible options a wargamer might want. I'll keep that in mind for next year. Would just an 'other' option be helpful?

I feel personally insulted that Building/Converting is not an option, but Painting is the first option presented.
It's the same sort of pro-painting bias that has been making a mess of the 40k general discussion lately.

No offence meant, but I have made a note of building/converting. We randomise the order of options whenever possible, but Paperform doesn't allow it for this type of question. I have made a note to update the order of options next year.

There's nothing you can say or do to make me take your survey!

Alright fine. I took your survey. You're a canny one...

One question that stuck out for me was the pick 3 places you don’t buy stuff at. 3 of the options revolved around conventions. As I’ve not been to one in decades, listing those kept me from getting to the other option.

I'm going to get a test-crew for the 2023 survey on here!

I filled it in. A couple of questions are problematic because they seem to preclude the idea that you might like more than one type of game. For example, questions like "how many miniatures do you prefer to use in a game" is odd because the answer is "it depends on the game". I've played great games that use almost 100 models per side, and games that use 3-4 per side.

While having an "other" option doesn't help much with analysis it could show you where you're being too restrictive in your options if you see lots of people selecting that answer.

As above, there are limitations to what we can usefully ask and prevent the survey becoming endless. I guess in most cases, those questions should be read as: what's your absolute favourite, deep down.

Me too. And I was really hoping to trash talk the local GW store. And eBay.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The scale question is also an issue. 28mm and 32mm/28 heroic take up two slots, which means I have to leave out Mantic Armada/Uncharted Seas ship scale and 10mm tank scale of I want to pick Starship scale for 3rd.

Or, for 2/3 or even 6mm players - A box of models.
