Recently I dumped out a tote of stuff I had accumulated that was stuff that had gotten separated from its sets or parts that I just didn't know what to do with.
It's not actually junk, just pieces that are currently homeless until I get time to sort through them. I know everyone else has something like this, show me yours.

How does this differ from a bits box?

Not to speak for the OP, but IMHO a bits box is full of spare parts to be saved/used for other projects, while a hobby graveyard is more (mostly) whole models from things that were never finished, abandoned, or left overs.

That picture is actually kind of sad and I don't think I have something like that. Unopened projects, yes, Bits boxes as well, but whole models thrown away so things will break? Not really.

Where you see sadness, I see potential. I'd be happy as a clam with a box like that, since there's so many projects that could be built using those parts, or broken models brought back to life. I have my own similar box, or rather, two of them. One is for loose bitz and the other for sprues and other big, bulky pieces that I nevertheless think will be useful down the line.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

As the original poster, I am surprised no one has a collection like this, Projects that went off the rails or stuff that ended up homeless for the time being,
It's not junk or trash, just need to re-sort it and organize when I have time.
For the sadness part, I am not going down that road, For most people, they can not look inward because they are afraid of what they might see.

I was going to dredge through my gallery here for pics, but gave up. And the actual minis are deep in boxes. But here are some (old) pics to let you know you are not alone:

It’s slightly more organized then just dumped in a drawer, but still a chaotic mess of old abandoned stuff. Probably about 3 bankers boxes full

Ye gods, what a plethora of riches just sitting there unused! It's a travesty!

Why, I count no fewer than nine 2nd ed 40K styrofoam ruined buildings just waiting to be built, preferably with green-flocked bases!

Oh ... and some minis of mild interest, I guess. (Is that a metal siege kit from 5th ed Fantasy?)

But seriously, how dare you hoard that classic styrofoam packaging instead of letting it grace the tabletop?! Hurts me right in the childhood.

If I got rid of the styrofoam, I’d just have a jumbled mess! I try to keep at least a little semblance of order in the deep parts of the Pile of Shame. (and I do have more kicking around) I can’t have the classic lead touching storage containers made this century. That would just be wrong!

The FLGS had the fortress for siege games, so I never got that. But I’m pretty sure I’ve got all the accessories. Battering rams, siege tower, ladders, rocks and stuff to drop off the walls. About half of it painted, and maybe some of it saw the table once? Don’t recall. Collecting dust now.
