I don’t see much discussing this upcoming series, and not a thing discussing the “tarot” teasers GW is dropping. Personally, I share that sentiment, it really just sounds more of the same old money grab before a new edition. And with the price of GW books, could be a hard sell.

GW itself seems barely aware that WarCom is doing it. There isn't really much to discuss, unless you want to purely speculate on the 'real meaning' of red ribbons strangling the galaxy or a snake wrapped around Abaddon's throat (and why he's in gold), number of candles, the eldar-ish throne with chaos symbol and etc.

Fake tarot symbolism for a future product is... not really anything to talk about, IMO. In retrospect it will all be clear or meaningless. The product will still have to sell itself on content once they start showing off books and/or boxes.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

Because they're all on the same page rather than individual articles.

Filler books until 10th.

Almost none will play the boarding actions.

Abaddon will obviously fail.

The only interesting thing is what models we might get out of it.

Right now?

We have but two short videos of “Tarot” Cards. This is like getting a teaser trailer for a movie, and then claiming the acting was poor, the fights were cack etc etc. in other words, you’re jumping the gun.

I know Dakka needs something to whine about, but could you at least wait until the first volumes are in hand, we get a better idea of the narrative, and how the books balance New Background and Rules content?

It's not that. It's that we've done this dance before, only this time they said there are no army rules in there, so we know this is just treading water until 10th hits.

Unfortunately GW hasn't said enough, yet, for it to be interesting aside from something about interior combat on space hulks.

There is one thing I'm hoping for from all of this and it's based on an older rumour that apparently Harlequins would get no new models for the 9th edition codex( so far true ), but there would be a new model for a supplement later on. I'm assuming that due to the introduction of the Lead Player( with no specific model, nor instructions in the Troupe box ) that it might still happen with Arks of Omen.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

The only thing this is getting me excited so far is the slightest implication of an actual "Tarot of the Emperor" getting released with the campaign - maybe using this artwork, maybe something from Blanche. I remain puzzled why GW has not done it yet, but this just might finally be the time.

They teased the possibility of Dark Mechanicum. But then said "No army rules". So, no Dark Mechanicum. Sooooo......don't care.

From what I heard tell, there's not going to be a whole pile of new rules like the Psychic Awakening, it's more scenarios and narrative. I am more interested in that really, at least that doesn't necessarily become useless should the new edition arrive later down the line.

Are these the books for the small-scale Boarding Actions thing? If so, I'm actually kind of looking forward to it. I like games built around smaller armies and limited lines of sight.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

Well, I think it's a few things. One of the first being that there appears to be no matched play rules coming, which has generally been a big selling point of these type of books. Really though, there is not much to "Hype" about it yet.

I think there is a reveal coming this week though at the GW event. If there is some real information coming (Like the Arkifane, heralading a new army like Dark Mechancium or something) then the Hype train should increase.

EDIT: I'd also like to add that the PA narrative event that lead into 9th was heralded as causing some crazy big changes, but I don't think that ever really materialized. The whole Blackstone/Necron TSK plotline just sort of got dropped, even though the impact could have been really huge (The stilling effect from blackstone was actually a pretty cool element)
So, I'd imagine people are also a little bit less excited for 9ths version of it. Seeing some rad new models should help some though.

It seems like most of the "big plots" surrounding edition changes are being treated as new plot hooks to be added to the status quo rather than something GW is in a hurry to move forward. The Ynnari being introduced were a big deal, but GW has basically just had them performing zero sum treasure hunting missions throughout 8th and 9th. Even the galaxy getting split down the middle by the Cicatrix Maledictum doesn't seem to get commented on all that much in later novels. It's usually a one-sentence acknowledgement. The only thing that I have seen actually come up repeatedly is people going, "Woah. What are these weird primaris guys?"

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'm not in a big hurry to force the Ynnari to find the final crone sword or anything; it's nice to have a chance to sit with the big developments. But it is weird to have things like the Silent King get so much hype and then seemingly not really have any impact.

There nothing much to discuss at this stage.

My initial thoughts are that I think that any interesting rules in these books for fighting in a space hulk will be obsolete with the launch of the next edition before I have a chance to try them. The pace of releases is too quick these days.

I was happy I didn't get drawn into psychic awakening and I'm almost certain I'll give these a pass too.

My guess? They'll get the "Agent of Chaos" keyword, and you can stick them in other Chaos armies. But no Dark Mechanicum.

I wouldn't rule out them having a DM keyword as well, and that it'll be used to get a better idea of how much interest there is in them - we do already have another "new" faction being released in the not too distant future, and both them and the Leagues could do with a filler wave before we add another new book on top.

So, gw stealing another idea from fw? The Chaos Hellwright also had the option of having either the LEGION or DARK MECHANICUM keyword, back before gw basically ripped off the unit's concept to create the Disco Lord, and then exile the Hellwright into Legends.

Did you, like, forget about the Psychic Awakening stuff we just went through not too long ago?

Psychic Awakening got more interest from me, because (incorrectly as it turned out) I imagined it was going to be a big "psychic-addon". Which GW have tried in various ways before.

So we'd see the rollout of new powers for existing factions, maybe give psykers to factions which didn't already have them, a much wider adoption of "priest powers" etc.
I also thought (whisper it etc) that they might be taking the story forward.

Instead, it was just kind of random.

And narratively I just don't think GW know where they want to go - so go nowhere. 9th's story was presumably meant to be "oh nos, Necrons are waking". Well... outside of the last PA book and the 9th edition announcement cinematic, have the Necrons really influenced any of the fluff? Is Arks of Omen just going to be "aha, the Necron's were getting up but look, eaten by Tyranids. Buy the new 10th edition starter/discount box with all new Tyranids now."

I think the problem is GW hasn't really said what Arks of Omen is. The teasers don't help tell me what it is. As others have pointed out, Psychic Awakening and the whole Cicatrix Maledictum stuff didn't lead to any meaningful changes either.

Combine all that with the lack of Matched Play rules and I can see why nobody's that bothered right now.

I think the Pariah Nexus was the only change brought by the Necrons, so a region of space without Chaos influence apparently. In essence, it's similar to how the DG got their Scourge stars in 8th, so some kind of mini empire. I wouldn't be surprised to see things like that in every edition. It's actually not that bad because it breathes some life into the setting. At the same time the people who don't want 40K to change are kept at bay because in the end the actual changes aside from the Cicatrix Maledictum and Cadia crushed boil down to hardly more than what we got before: Baal under siege, Medusa campaign, Orks/ Daemons at Armageddon, stuff like that.

From my PoV, at it's very best it'll be another Traitor Legions and be great before it gets invalidated by the next edition.

I really don't know what GW is doing with Chaos. I held off getting the new CSM codex - largely because it seemed to be focusing on non-CSM stuff like the new possessed cultists and so on, but also because I play World Eaters and I knew they weren't in it. I've been waiting with bated breath for the new WE codex, but every snippet of info so far is making it sound lacklustre and half-arsed. And now this? Meh. Don't care, honestly...

Some have alluded to it, but we did have a lot more discussion about Psychic Awakening with as much teaser material as we have now. It just seems that people’s experience with PA may have soured enthusiasm for further “filler” books.
There was a ton of speculation about PA when it was teased, but all I see here regarding Arks is about 10th edition. Not many seem to care about what Arks brings to the table, besides new models.

On the “no new rules” I think people have a bit of confusion.

They said theres no new rules for existing armies - which I understand to be stratagems, special units etc. Not that there’s no rules at all.

The trouble with Paycheck Awakening was the background was….fairly scant. Tales seemingly in the middle just sort of ended.

Mind you, we did get teasers for what came with 9th, up to and including Squats. But we also had Fulgrim (or something similar) teased at.

One day I’ll go through my copies and post up what I don’t think came to pass.
