How do!

So with all major releases now released and for the most part digested, here’s a thread to tell us what you consider the high points have been. Games, TV, Movies, even Music. Provided it came out in 2022, it’s fair game. Here’s a selection of my own.

Prey

Hot diggety damn what a movie! A latter day sequel as is the fashion, but a really bloody good one. The writers used what made the first film so good, without it merely being a mindless retread. It’s well shot, well scripted, excellent effects, really cool fight scenes just an incredible movie. My favourite thing is that it manages a fair number of rug pulls, but without treating its audience like idiots, or having twists come out of leftfield. It plays with our expectations and subverts them, but in really clever and inventive ways. Absolutely wonderful stuff.

Andor

It’s Star Wars, Jim. But not as we know it. It was an ambitious project incredibly well realised. It made “dark and gritty” actually mean something that didn’t translate to “gloomy lighting and an edgelord writer”.

Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Possibly divisive choice, but I bloody loved it.

Right, that’ll do for starters. I’m sure more will come to me! But Prey remains my absolute tip top choice of greatness this year.

This is a great idea for a thread. My top 3 choices would be

Stranger Things 4
Easily the best season of the show so far. The combination of CG and prosthetics for Vekna was a great nod to the 80s, and they even dug out Robert Englund - genuine horror royalty - for this season. Can't wait for the followup.

The Boys
I really didn't like s2, but s3 really won me back. I don't think they quite stuck the landing at the end but the journey there was incredible. I especially loved what they did with Black Noir.

Strange New Worlds
What a return to form for this franchise. Anson Mount absolutely killed it as a star fleet captain, and they spoofed my absolute favorite episode from the original series for the finale of this show. Balance of Terror was amazing, and they wrote a beautiful compliment to that episode.

My favorite movie this year was Everything Everywhere All At Once. It expanded my mind and grabbed me by the feels. An amazing achievement of a film. I never thought I could get so emotional over a rock.

My favorite series was Andor. What a return to form! A masterfully written, directed and acted drama about cute droids and pew pew lasers. I never thought I could get so emotional over a brick.

For other media, I’m going with history on YouTube. So many YouTubers have upped their games this year that ancient history has now become the edge-of-the-seat can’t miss drama. If you need to fold laundry or wash dishes, put on some Kings and Generals, History With Cy, Sam Aranow, Early Americas, or any of another dozen great content creators. I never thought I could get so emotional over Persia.

* Ozark final season - dark and well written I enjoyed it all including the end - not all did.

* Slow Horses on Sky/Apple - again excellent writting (IMO)

* The English - see above

I honestly can't think of a outstanding film I saw this year

I would def agree with the history stuff on youtube - alot of really interesting docus on there.

I was really disapointed with the last episode - seemed to be about an hour too long for me.

Ooh! One the history thing?

Time Team Returned And It Was Glorious

I cannot overstate how important Time Team has been to inspiring interested in Archaeology in Britain.

Super accessible, without ever talking down to its audience. Never up it’s own arse, never overly academic.

It’s just….perfection. And now it’s back. And I love it. The way a man loves a woman. Or Rod Hull loves greeeeeeeeeen jelly.

Sandman, perfect cast (even if I had doubts about Kirby as I didn't rate her in The Good Place, but lass done good), and unlike some of the more "dedicted" fanbase I was okay with the changes (
Spoiler:
well beside Gregory, !
)

Honorable mention for Wanda-Vision, didnt stick the landing but was a blast till the last few episodes

Flims

Prey, not as awesome as some make out but way better than I was expecting, also a late catch up watch for The Kid who would be King, possibly a bit overlong but just charming and fun (with Excalibur references out the wazoo!)

Pooter Games

My ongoing Into the Breach habit replacing my FTL habit, piddling boiling grump induced but like FLT I love it

Second Sandman, what an incredibly well crafted tale.

For films- I'll say Weird- The Al Yankovic story. Wildly entertaining, and effective at what it does.

I'm kinda shocked in general how few people have seemed to have watched Better Call Saul since I noticed there was never any thread here for the final season, but in terms of TV shows, Better Call Saul and the finale is definitely one of the standouts for this year. Arguably surpassing Breaking Bad in many ways and the cast absolutely nailed it.

Movies have been a bust for me this year, at least in terms of live-action ones. Marvel was underwhelming and killed my hope for the MCU after Spider-Man: No Way Home. The Batman was....okay but a bit too self-indulgent for my tastes. In contrast, the Bob's Burger Movie was a surprisingly good standalone movie that is easy for newcomers to watch and a great treat for existing fans, so it gets a shout-out from me as the one that stood out for this year.

Purely for how much memes it spawned, Morbius gets a place of honor for being one of the best movies no one has actually bothered watching. At the height of the Morbing memes, it was fantastic.

Anime wise, Chainsaw Man is definitely my top pick, though Pop Team Epic Season 2 and Spy x Family are a close 2nd and 3rd for me.

Film - Top Gun: Maverick
Top Gun is one of my forever movies. I can watch it a thousand times and not get sick of it. The sequel wasn't pushy with the usual "Wow look we added more to the old movie" stuff IMO and it has planes.

TV - SAS: Rogue Heroes
A stellar cast, a brilliant story, and lots of unhinged maniacs doing unhinged maniac things in the desert during WW2. The only point of irritation was that there was a Patton dressed up as a Panzer and it was painfully obvious but considering how difficult it is to find working German tanks for some reason, I'll allow it.

Video Game - Stellaris
Always pays for it's new DLCs.

Spoiler: Morbius =/= any sort of best movie. Not even in the questionable "so bad it's good" category. It's just crap. Wich is why no one bothered to watch it.

I watched it. It fething sucked, and not in the way it was supposed to. My life now has a constant, distant, niggling dread that it'll get a sequel, or they'll use Leto in the wider universe.

I figured as much, which I think is why it got so much momentum as a meme that it was a "good" movie with morbillion bucks made at the box office. I think the best part is how Sony bought the fake hype and actually tried rereleasing it at certain theatres to capitalize on the meme only for it to flop again miserably.

BCS is definitely one of the best spin-off shows I've ever seen, but BB is still my clear favorite between the two. It took me a while to get into BCS as I honestly thought they picked the worst character for a spin-off show, but I got sucked in once I finally gave it a go. I think the first 3 seasons especially were excellent, just as good as most of BB but in a very different way. Everything they did with the legal practise politics and Saul's brother was very good drama. The show took a downturn for me once Chuck was gone. Still very good, but not as gripping.

The later seasons suffered a great deal from prequelitis. It's really difficult to feel the mortal peril of the characters when you know they have to survive to be on the sister show.

True, though it did have enough tension for what really did end up for Nacho, since it was ambiguous enough as to whether or not he may have been vaccuum cleanered like Walt or Saul, which I think they did a really good job with. Lalo is a damn force of nature and you can't help but root for him against Gus even though you know he can't finish the job because of BB. If nothing else, I think it's significantly better at least in terms of their female leads, as I 100% prefer Kim over dealing with Skyler any day.

House of the Dragon

Pretty much redeemed the franchise in my eyes, and actually has me stoked for the future projects that are planned in the ASOIAF world, as well as inching me closer and closer to getting into CMON's wargame set in that universe. I don't have the time for that, damnit!

Set designs, music, costumes, CGI, dialogue were all well done. And all of that was capped off by excellent acting (Scene of the Year : King Viserys walking to the throne).

I think I've watched the season 3 times. I wish it had been longer.

Honourable, but not quite qualifying mention for The Walking Dead

For one of those shows that feels to have been around forever, and had notable highs and lows? The Walking Dead ended quite strongly, all things considered.

It did fumble the ball in the closing minutes, providing a close but not closure or a final resolution, but the two thirds of the final season we got in 2022 is up there, for the most part, with its best days.

Genuine tension. Some genuine character development and relationships between. Even managing to make the Zombies a bit scary again, by throwing in slightly more threatening “some of them can convincingly climb” Zombies here and there.

It didn’t quite achieve greatness in the end, but it made a decent and importantly, entertaining, enough fist of it.

Certainly it had one of the stronger finales taken together than other long running shows.
