Subject: Vote for Dakka Painting Challenge Round 115 September 2024: Absolute Unit
|
 |
The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar
|
Time to vote!
This month the topic was: Absolute Unit - Some things are just Bigger than others. Entries should be larger than their peers. Giant tanks, big bruisers, or even the roughest little fey in the fairy circle. Or it could just be part of the model. Swords longer the the wielder is tall, or hammers bigger than the torso of the guy/gal swinging it. Sometimes size does matter.
As always, you're free to hand out as many votes as you like, and for any entry you feel deserves recognition, based on anything from technical proficiency or model choice, a neat conversion or a cool take on the theme, or anything else! You're also very welcome to leave some feedback here for the entrants, and many of the images click through to the Dakka gallery if you'd like to give out a vote or two there as well.
Leopold Helveine - Adel the explosive rugged-beard
Ezki - Dark Eldar Archon
Jammer87 - Varghulf Courtier
Daia T'Nara - Lady Sheeva and Niamh
theCrowe - Tomb Kings Bone Giant
JoshInJapan - Storm Giantess
Pariah Press - Citadel SFD Giant Robot - Rapier
youwashock - Rancor, Boba Fett, and Baby Yoda
KidCthulhu -Squat In Exo-Armor
Vejut - Badger Siblings
Geifer - Carnotaurus
XvArcanevX - Sir BigBash.
inmygravenimage – Spectre
Gulgog TufToof - Snapshot
Halfling84 - Elefant SPG, a gift from the ally
Mr Nobody - Caravan Oxen
endtransmission - The Wraithcubi
straken619 - Kroxigors
Nevelon - Kosargi Nightguard
Llamahead – Reaper Stone Giant
Turaxa - Chibi Triceratops
Captain Brown - Tallest Necromunda Terrain Piece
M0iM0i -Endboss Skeleton
Maharg - Ogre
Midget Gems - Knights Sanguine Redemptor Dreadnought
CancelledApocalypse – Wraithlord
Poll will run for 5 days. Let me know if anything is wrong.

Wow, what a month that turned out to be! I couldn't find an entry I didn't think was excellent, so everyone got a vote from me (except mine, obviously). I couldn't even pick a top three, everything was so good! Stellar work, everyone!

So many cool entries this month, I also ended up giving everyone a vote. I'll try to find time to comment on individual entries, but for now let may say that I can't actually pick a favorite. Every entry has something delightful.

These three stood out (for different reasons) the most for me, which doesn't mean I don't think other entries were good/nice/awesome/beautiful, but I just want to keep my special-commentary to three entries out of tidyness. This also doesn't mean I only voted on the ones I gave a comment on, because I voted on a -lot- more.
-
theCrowe - Tomb Kings Bone Giant
This thing is so original, knowing what you built it from and what it turned into, some superb creativity and inspiration. It's huge compared to the other skello's. Imho I rather look at custom creations like these than any golden demon paintjob, this tickles motivation.
XvArcanevX - Sir BigBash.
Pure boxart in every way, the bone stands out to me but also the very well highlighted armor pieces. It just popped out of this list like that. Actually, that blue is beautiful.
The Axe rust effect comes off very realistic'
Ofcourse also love the basing, very much.
CancelledApocalypse – Wraithlord
The colorscheme is what made this one stood out for me, would look great on an entire Eldar army too, the nmm on the sword is so crisp it makes my eyes drop into two halves from the sharpness, I don't even compute how you manage that linework unless you paint with a nanobot holding a miniature brush. All in all imho this entry is the winner of the entire month though (and I know you threw it over the fence 5 days late )

What a great month for everyone here. A ton of amazing entries and difficult to single out people for votes.
Here’s my feedback for the month:
Leopold Helveine - Firstly, I want to thankyou for your feedback on my entry. I really did spend a lot of extra time on that one so to receive such positive remarks from you was much appreciated. I’m glad you liked the results. As for your entry this month, I really liked it. Obviously the colour choices are wonderful and there are some careful highlights used throughout that really make the figure pop. Overall a genuinely nice job.
Ezki - This is superb work as usual. The gentle blends of colour on the armour and the excellent skintones really stand out. Also, the use of the rugged textures and brush strokes on the cloth contrast nicely with the finer glazes on the armour giving the whole model a sense of realism and detail that really perks interest for the viewer. Finally the work on the blade is beautiful. Excellent.
Jammer87 - Really love this model. I’m a FEC collector so your entry is halfway to a vote from me by default. Yep, favoritism is a thing. I stand guilty. Onto the paintjob, I like the approach you’ve taken with the colour scheme here, the sickly grey/green hues work brilliantly and contrast nicely with the browns of the fur. Overall nice job.
Daia T’Nara - Striking choice of colour here as is typical from your entries and it really does work wonderfully! The whole scheme is very bold yet works cohesively and is a lot of fun to behold.
TheCrowe - Love the vision and initiative on display here! Creativity by the bucketload and the overall appearance is spot on. Great stuff.
JoshinJapan - This is very striking. Superlative work on the unusual skintone and the paintwork on the cloth is beautifully realised. Also the red hair works to give the whole model that bold contrast that draws the eye. Really excellent.
Pariah Press - Nice clean paintjob here and good work on the chequers.
YouWasShock - Man this is awesome! Love the integration of the figures into one piece and the work on the rancors skin is excellent. Also, the glossy finish on the tongue and mouth really gives the whole maw a nasty vibe, which is exactly what is needed for a Rancor! Felt is just brilliantly done too, with the careful and subtle use of what looks like a stippling approach to achieve some really nice shadows and highlights. Great palette too. Brilliant.
KidCthulu - Nice neat paintjob here and I really like the work on the hazard sign on the fuel tank! Great.
Vejut - There some excellent detail achieved here on the clothing of the badgers; I’m assuming that’s a tartan pattern you’ve handcrafted there? Also the choice of colour is very nice and the highlighting is nicely placed. Really good stuff.
Geifer - Life… finds a way. Great work on the reptilian pattern adorning this mighty lizard.
Inmygravenimage - I’ll be honest. I feel as though there is some genuinely lovely work here but the image quality appears to be very low and I’m struggling to make some of the details out. I can see some excellent choices around colour and contrast and there looks to be some wonderful work on the fire and smoke. Perhaps try to get some higher resolution pics for the next round because I think your work deserves to be seen in cleaner images.
Gulgog Tuftoof - Really excellent work on the details in this model and that rifle! Awesome
Halfling84 - Love the realism you’ve achieved on this. Excellent work on those tracks.
Mr Nobody - This is a visual feast for the eyes. The attention to detail and the clever use of such a wide range of colors and hues is beautiful and all the more impressive given that the final result isn’t too noisy or discombobulated. Really great work.
EndTransmission - Excellent piece of work here. A very clean and tidy job with some truly fantastic work on the horns and the cloth. The base of really excellent too and fits the model perfectly. Lovely job.
Straken619 - This is amongst my favorites of the month. The tones you have used on these reptilians, the subtle transition to the cream of the underbellies. The excellent spots of colour on the jewelry and weapons. The close attention to detail and overall easy to read and clean appearance of the work. Truly excellent work.
Nevelon - Great work here. A clean and readable result and these guys look suitably macabre.
Llamahead - Nice work on the bejeweled clothing here.
Turaxa - This reminds me of that film from back in the day with the baby dinosaur; can’t remember what is was called. Anyhoo, clean and simple.
Captain Brown - Very cool structure this, nice work on the weathering.
Moimoi - A gruesome scene to be sure! Love the skeleton and the expression on its hapless human victim.
Maharg - Really nice work here on the skintones and the pattern on the clothing is bold and wonderfully realised. Good stuff.
Midget Gems - Love the weathered and battered appearance of this piece. Nice subtle shading work as well. Good stuff.
CancelledApocalypse - Superlative. This is truly accomplished painting. Those transitions are buttery smooth. The colors are striking. The work on the details painstaking and clean. It’s just brilliant work. Well done.
Right, I think that’s everybody! I’d better get cracking on my gnarly entry for this month! See you all in that thread.

Utilizing Careful Highlighting
|
Thanks for the comments XvArcanevX, I really need to get back to commenting.
That is tartan, though IIRC I used a pattern from the registry Scotland keeps--New Hampshire if I recall right. The fabric there was similar to the hat on the highlander badger, and I think that would have been a better look--highlighting and shading that gave me no end of trouble especially keeping the tartan readable, ended up needing some heavy advice from more seasoned painters to get that much. Was going for the tartan as a link between the two.

It was a crazy tight month as far as amazing entries. We’ve got 5 people sharing the podium, with a 3 way tie for 4th. And all just one vote apart. Honorable mention to Ezki, JoshInJapan, and Halfling84. There were times while the votes were still coming in that I was going to have to write up 8 people for the final thread. But at the wire, here are the winners!
Giant alien monster? Check. Adorable tiny alien? Check. Normal guy for scale? Check. youwashock’s Rancor, Boba Fett, and Baby Yoda start us off with 24 votes.
Also in 3rd is Mr Nobody’s Caravan Oxen. Packed with both details and bargains! Oxen has wares if you have coin...
He’s big, he’s brutal (and maybe cunning), he’s Sir BigBash from the brush of XvArcanevX in 2nd with 25 votes.
CancelledApocalypse’s Wraithlord also shares the silver, walking the warrior’s path, even in death.
But the most absolute units of all are straken619’s Kroxigors. These savage brutes claim gold with 26 votes!
--
This really was an incredible month. I know I always say that, so it might just come across as the boy who cried wolf, but the votes back me up. Not just the tight pack at the top, but all down the line. Amazing work from everyone! Congrats to the winners, and everyone who entered.

I don’t normally call out the 4th place entries, but with how tight things were this month I felt that I needed to. We have to draw the line somewhere, but really this month. Just the back and forth jockeying for who ended up where on the podium.
Reminds of of watching the olympics over the summer. The differences between the first and last place sprinters was like .05 seconds, and all the times were inhumanly fast.
That was this month.
Again, amazing work from everyone.

Wow, I never thought I would win one of those! Especially in a month like this with so many amazing entries.
My top 5 is this:
JoshInJapan - Great work of that giantess. I really like the blue skin.
youwashock - Rancor looks like it has a lot of flat surfaces that can make it look boring but you have done a really good work painting it and it looks mean and scary.
XvArcanevX - Another great miniature from you. I really like the way you painted the armor and the skull on the shoulder
Halfling84 - I especially like the weathering. Looks like it's out in the battle a while.
CancelledApocalypse - When I saw this as the last entry I was sure it was going to be one of the winners. Very well painted.
Congratulations to the rest of the winners and thanks to everyone that voted for me.
Oh and btw I finished the leader of the group as well. Here is a photo with all 3 of them.

Thanks It came about kind of by chance - I felt the hot pink lightning claws on the Dalek Marine turned out well so I figured I'd reuse that, but with two sets of claws, plus the nails on her hand, hot pink ended up having a lot of presence across the mini so I kept at it with other bits of trim I'd normally leave gold or do some other random colour for flashiness. Wasn't on purpose but it ended up a nice fulcrum between the white armour and the gold and flesh tones on the rest of the decoration. The warband overall remains to chaotic to try to introduce a uniform scheme now, but I've been thinking of adding a unit of Rubrics (no reason Thousand Sons can't be tempted away from Tzeentch, horny dust isn't even close to the weirdest thing in the Eye of Terror), they might inherit Sheeva's colour scheme since she's the mage-in-chief around here.
