To add to odin's answer, each model in a unit selects its own Charge target. So you can charge different units, since each model moves and fights on it's own.

Think of resolving actions like Bloodbowl or Necromunda (move, action per model) rather than 40k (move and action by unit).

Yes, that's what I've meant.

In Warmachine, individual models fight one another, rather than resolving combat by unit. This bleeds over into targeting rules also (one of the major misunderstandings from 40k players). You can, in fact, shoot the leader of the unit if he's in front. So most leaders lead from behind.
