About the time most took up smoking I took up wargaming I could afford one or the other and decided to take the more lasting less bodily damaging one. Oddly enough I find I either spend on booze or toy soldiers and lately I've cut back a lot on booze!

He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. I used to smoke pretty heavily particularly when playing. That was in the 80s when smoking was a lot more common than now. I gave it up for health reasons and found out how irritating to the eyes the smoke of other players is.
I don't think any available public venue in the UK could legally allow smoking inside, but you could smoke in a private house if the owner allowed it.

I smoke, but I go out of my way to insure I don't bother others with it. It's part of the social terrain in California, riots can break out if you smoke in the wrong places.
When playing warhamms, I usually only take one break during games unless I'm playing apocalypse, in which case I go during opponents movement phase.
What's funny is I recently switched to an E-cig, I got a bad-ass prodigy with all the trimmings, and it's still not enough for the smoking crowd. It doesn't smell, there's no smoke what so ever, and I still go outside to use it even though I'm just exhaling water vapor. People still feel they have the right to tell me its bad for me, and use it as an excuse to feel superior, even though I am not harming or bothering them in any way. (even my clothes don't stink anymore.)
I would like to point out to all the non-smokers that when you tell smokers its bad for them, you NEVER sound like your concerned for the smokers health. With the exception of close friends and family, non-smokers bitching about my smoking are just telling me they're better than me, In their not-so-humble opinion.
Non-smokers complaining is not without its merits though. The second someone launches into their own personal tirade about how awful I am for smoking, it lets me know they are a person who feels they should have dominion over me, and gives me the ability to react accordingly.

I don't smoke either. One of the reasons is that I'm underaged (well that doesn't seem to be problem if you watch at the other teens), because I don't want to, my gaming club doesn't allow smoking (smokers get banned or something like that, because it's designed for 13-22 years old) and mainly because I wouldn't have money on my dear minis. Which would you rather have, 4 box (or whatever those 20 cigarette things are called) or one 30 euros costing box of minis?

I never said that smoking won't increase the chances of getting cancer, I just said that smoking is not a sure-fire way to get cancer. There's only four direct causes of cancer, and smoking is one of them...however you can throw this statement out if you please as I can only recall two of them off the top of my head...
For the record, I totally agree it's terrible for your health and I've known plenty of smokers with and without health complications.

Back when I played more, the group I played with followed the "Respect the Rules of the Home" approach : At my place, we played in the garage, so the ruling was "Puff & Play", whilst a friend's mother hated people smoking in the house, so the rule was "Smoke-Break outside at mid-point, and for the post game analysis". We never smoked in public arenas though, at GW or FLGSs for example, but that was before the current legislation. As for the Smoking=Cancer debate, my own position is that smoking MAY be a catalyst, but is NOT a sole cause. Either way, it is something I indulge in, but do not encourage in others. To my kids, I express it as "learn from my mistake and don't start" As for the idiots who try to guilt me with their feeble cough, give up. As long as I smoke in an area where it is within the law I'm within my rights. If you don't want to breathe it, walk away because I have as much right to stand there as you. LordHat : I salute your group's "smoke-em-out" policy to those idoits, perhaps it might just kill them off !

I'm not a smoker, but I don't mind allowing my opponents to take a smoke break. Gives me time to look the table over good and game-plan. And I agree with people that it their body and they can do whatever they want to it.
BTW smoking causes cancer because of the chemicals and additives in the smoke and tar. Tar, is the cancer-causing agent in cigarette smoke. Tar is made up of thousands of chemicals, and I'm pretty sure about 40 of them are PROVEN, without a doubt, to cause cancer. Same stuff happens with chewing tobacco, I'll bet that none of you have seen a man with no lower jaw.

Never smoked a cigarette, never will.
Outside of a timed/tourney game all sorts of random breaks come up. And during one, none of them do.

I always enjoy hearing teens/underage smokers make far reaching life decisions and proclaim wisdom with little life experience. If I had a dollar for each person I went to High School with that was 'never going to smoke' and than ended up smoking, I'd have enough for a carton of cigarettes.

Not enough options here. You need another that says, "Yes, but only when it won't interrupt games." I am a smoker and I would only go out for a smoke during a game if it wouldn't inconvenience the opponent. Most often, this occurrs only in multi-player games (ex: 3v3 or more) or Apoc where my hopping out for 5 minutes won't affect anyone or anything. Like, in the opponent's movement phase.

I quit smoking and have since grown very disgusted by the smell of cigarette smoke. I feel it very disrespectful of other players that do not smoke if you smoke during play. Even after a smoke break, the smell still exudes from your clothes. So, I say no smoking especially in a gaming environment where children are often present.

So because the smell of smoke has personal connotations with you, I'm now being disrespectful when I even just WALK around you? I ask because it seems you don't even want us smoking BEFORE we play you. You mention children, so let me just go ahead and ask, what are the health risks for smelling someone who smoked five minutes ago? What "third hand smoke" studies are you citing here, specifically? If you didn't mean anything about a health risk for the kids, why did you mention them? How are smokers hurting children by being around them after they have smoked?
If you want to start a discussion about smells you don't care for in a gaming store, I'm all for it. Just let us smokers take stabs at the non-bathers and too-much-aftershave gamers to level the playing field, I'd love to act holier-than-tho for once.

I had given up at 28 and it was being in the pub, drinking, that made me lose willpower and smoke again. I've now not smoked for 1 year and pretty happy about it.
That said, my 2 most common 40k opponents both smoke and I've no objection to it whilst playing as long as a window is open nearby. I hated hypocritical holier than thou exsmokers when I was a smoker and I'm not going to lecture folks now I've quit, I especially hate that weak little cough they do around someone smoking.
I had 19 years of smoking, loved it for the most part, when I realised it was leaving me breathless when I ran, I finally quit because I had chosen to do it, rather than feeling I ought to. I also found following the smoking ban in pubs that I was smoking alot less anyway.
Pretty much my story, I started at 11. Hehe, I had to quit drinking before I quit smoking, and I couldn't drink for a couple of years because I knew I would get loaded and start smoking again. It's been a few years, and I'm back to getting sloshed and loving it!
With the money I saved in the first month and a half of quitting smoking, I went on a trip to California. 2.5 packs a day of Marlboros. Ridiculous.

Never will I be convinced to smoke, but I guess that if I would let them smoke as long as it is at the end of a his/her turn. After all the game takes a lot of standing and concentration, so a little five minute break to gather my thoughts and observe the table while they are outside is enjoyable.

When playing casual 40k, smoke breaks are a part of life. At a tournament, have a butt while I deploy, and then deal with your addiction until the game is done. My fat ass can't go get a pizza in the middle of a game, so deal.
Love the quote! On the topic though, i do smoke but so do most of my gaming mates. I at least have the decency to go outside, even at my own home for those that don't.
