I smoked from 13 to 32, gave up last year and have finally reached the stage now where I can get drunk and now not look to smoke. I had given up at 28 and it was being in the pub, drinking, that made me lose willpower and smoke again. I've now not smoked for 1 year and pretty happy about it.

That said, my 2 most common 40k opponents both smoke and I've no objection to it whilst playing as long as a window is open nearby. I hated hypocritical holier than thou exsmokers when I was a smoker and I'm not going to lecture folks now I've quit, I especially hate that weak little cough they do around someone smoking.

I had 19 years of smoking, loved it for the most part, when I realised it was leaving me breathless when I ran, I finally quit because I had chosen to do it, rather than feeling I ought to. I also found following the smoking ban in pubs that I was smoking alot less anyway.

@MGS - with the money you save by not smoking, are you buying more minis?

Well all but 2 of our gaming group smoke so we just light up once in the store. We don't take breaks, we just smoke inside (as long as the owner isn't about).

If he is then we all just hold off since it would be a royal pain to go down 4 floors for a break.

I smoke,but if playing in a non-smoking situation ,I wait,sooner or later my opponent will A. want a smoke themself or B. want a quick break.
If it's a home game,light 'em up.

I do not smoke tobacco and have not gamed with anyone who does. If I were to, I would respect their lifestyle choice and allow them a reasonable amount breaks in the game much like bathroom breaks

I leave when its my opponents movement phase and go take a smoke. I am very trusting this is even in tournaments.

It occurs when something goes catastrophically wrong with the cells in your body. Sometimes it happens to three year olds. Sometimes it happens to people who follow such a healthy regime that you'd expect them to live to two hundred? Why? Because like your friend, they were the ones who lost on that .0000001 lottery of cell division going haywire and their bodies not being able to stop it. What raises that chance up into whole numbers? Spending years introducing toxic gak into your body, like, say, the components of cigarette smoke.

So, learned something?

I no longer smoke and am very glad I quit. There are some smokers at my FLGS including both the owners. It doesn't bother me when they go out for a smoke.

Using your post, I have all the evidence needed to say that smoking is not a cause of cancer. It may help it by damaging the body to cause a regrowth of cells that could go out of control, but it won't cause it.

Back on topic: the shop I play at is roughly 75% smokers, and even during casual games, they only go out to smoke in between games. I really don't mind it too much, doesn't get in the way of anything.

If you smoke, take a break, like 5-10 mins ONCE maybe twice in a game and go outside, I don't smoke and my lungs don't want to taste your fumes.

Most of the people I've gamed with over the years have been non-smokers, so it doesn't affect me much.

1. Say what you want about it not actually causing cancer, with all the crap they throw in those things it can't be good for you.

2. Don't care if you wanna smoke, just please don't stand there and blow it in my face, can't stand the smell.

Oh please, don't be obtuse. My post doesn't constitute the entire body of research on the subject, merely a simplified explanation to someone who has no idea how it works. If you're going to do YMDC about it, fine: An extremely elevated number of people who have no other predisposition for lung cancer but are long time smokers develop it. Ipso facto, smoking causes cancer.

We set the table up on the porch. It makes it better, with the sunlight, fresh air, mosquitoes and taking a drag as necessary.

I mainly smoked hand rolled tobacco smuggled illegally into the country from mainland Europe (I was living in a major fishing town until a couple of years ago), so it was never very expensive. The money I save by not smoking isn't really all that much, certainly not enough to buy a GW mini with...

I don't mix Warhammer with booze (although I am dying to see if it is truly a beer and pretzels game but the flgs wouldn't be too pleased with that)

plus none of my opponent smoke, come to think about it. I had never even thought of anyone mixing the habits.

I don't smoke, but i don't really have a problem with the few opponents at my club who take smoking breaks. It gives me a chance to watch how the other peoples' games are going.

Surely no one still believes smoking doesn't cause cancer. I find the highly graphic images on all packs in Australia to be very disturbing.

QFT. You wouldn't believe how many of the nice-looking (but frankly stupid) girls in my school sneak out of class to smoke on the beach. Teachers aren't on duty around that area at recess and lunch, so they always get away with it.

Game wise, I don't mind taking a break mid game if my opponant wants to smoke/deal with the spouse/pinch a deuce or whatever. Usually casual 2000k+ games at the house require it anyway, and it lets me get a drink or use the bathroom.
It does get annoying when is every 30 minutes though. I personally think that agreeing to a game is agreeing to pay attention and focus on the game for 2-3 hours. Not being able to commit to that is sort of a deal breaker for me, with minor exception.

As to women smoking, I gotta agree it is a big turn off in general. A little smoking here and there is acceptable (and sometimes that second hand lip tingle from making out with a girl with nicotine residue is sexy) but it isn't a long term sort of thing as John pointed out. They either quit and get fat, or don't quit and look like Clint Eastwood at 40. Best case scenario they take good care of their skin, but still have a smokey stink and stained teeth.

I think in this line of work, we're lucky if they can stand the smell of the gamer.

Stench of the gamer.
But yeah, it's the smell and taste that disgust me.
