This seems fairly clear to me. With Living metal you get no bonus dice to penetrate, correct?
Spore Mines: 2d6+3. Is it more than one die being rolled? Yes. Does that make it a bonus die? Yes. Ergo, 1d6+3 is rolled. Even though the spore mine is a 'special rule', it is still rolling more than one die, meaning that one of the dice is a bonus.
Though, I'll admit there is a problem with the FAQ that says 'Always' and the Necron book saying 'Always'. (personally, I would go with the monolith's special rule, just so the nid player doesn't waste a turn hoping for a 12)
This said, Eldritch Storm, Farsight, etc would get 1d6 to penetrate, because 2d6 is more than one, so one die is a bonus.

I dont see how there is bonus dice being rolled, bonus would be referring to any extra dice rolled during a normal armor pen roll, this is ignoring the normal rule of rolling armor pen and replacing it with its out rule, which would mean its no longer a standard armor pen roll as defined in the brb, but instead being overridden by a specific codex rule.
living metal never even enters the equation, it never rolls for armor pen as defined in the brb, instead its armor pen rule is overridden by a special codex specific rule of 2d6+3.
This is just specific>general .....

The argument that '2d6+3' is not a bonus dice just seems silly and like people are grasping at straws. Just because the codex doesn't say 'roll an extra die for armor penetration' but instead says 'roll 2d6' doesn't mean that a bonus die isn't being rolled. The spore mine is strength 3, the 'special rule' says roll 2d6+3. Looks like one extra die is being rolled, because more than one die is being rolled.
What about Meltabombs? They're the logical extension of the Melta rules (roll an extra d6 at half range) Meltabombs just say '8+2d6' for armour pen, does that mean that meltabombs are now the best monolith killer?
Saying that something rolled 2d6+3 for armour pen (eldritch storm, Bio Acid mines) is just another way of saying 'roll an extra d6 for armour pen'. Especially since the roll is 2d6 plus strength. even though it's not written as a specific extra dice, the effect is that an extra die is being rolled. Therefore living metal would take effect.

Before the FAQ was released, yes. Yes I did. With the FAQ no, they roll 2d6+3, unless their target is a monolith, in which case they roll 1d6+3

How about this one. The FAQ talks about unaugmented strength + D6 for AP on a Monolith. Now, a powerfist/klaw/Dreadnought CCW boost the base strength to 8, 10, ect. So, a dreadnought assaults a monolith then it is it's base strength of 5 + D6 for AP the way the Living Metal rule and FAQ reads.

The FAQ specifically states that models get to double their strength for those weapons (pg 4 of the Necron FAQ)

Errrm, no. Powerfists etc are covered by the Necron FAQ.

Cool, then the guy we played against was just upset that he was getting assaulted by 3 dreads. He was screaming about the FAQ and since none of had it with us we just let him have it to stop his fat butt from whining.

Even though they attempted to make LM trump everything else people are scrambling for loop holes to get around it. GW needs to start wording more rules like they worded the D-strength rule in apocalypse... which was something along the lines of, "Remove all models touched by the template. No, the D weapon isnt interested in your special rules, just remove the freaking models."
With that guideline, LM would look something like, "With the exception of ordinance, you may only roll 1d6+S. Ever. Your tank hunters and special penetration rules can go f*ck themselves."

If they put that in the next Necron codex I will buy 900,000 points of Monoliths! Though it should say "With the exception of NORMAL Ordnance", as some ordnance weapons might get special penetrating rules in the future.
