Most of my painted "damage" is really just a result of lousy painting.

Depends on the army... My orks are very worn on the vehicles, the meks dont always have enough time to make repairs between stuffs, but the tau are very crisp and clean.

For me, it's faction-specific. My fluff involves Ultramarines supporting Blood Ravens on their decimated recruiting worlds to repay a debt of honor. As such, the Ultramarines will send essentially honor guard in their most pristine equipment and support staff to keep it that way. The Blood Raven equipment is much more "functional" and has some battle damage painted on.

For my Necrons, there is no battle damage on vehicles. Their color palette brightens as they rank up - a warriors is much darker then a Lychguard or Lord.

My chaos guys, when I finally do some vehicles, will be moderately damage since they are ancient, but still in good conditions via slave support staff.

My orks are all always pretty messed up, as is Orky.

I don't do battle damage. I think as a general effect it looks good, but too much is too much. Any given model should generally stick to ornamentation, weathering, battle damage, or nurglification/excessive conversion. If you do all of that stuff it (on each model) can make your models look ridiculous. Anyway most of my stuff is nurgled out.

Honestly, i think it boils down to how you view your own army, as a dark angels player, i like to have alot of battle damage on my vehicles, as it gives the impression of a prolonged engagement, without rest or respite from the consistent assault against the enemy. i always imagine my dark angels on the last heroic push, in complete and utter defiance of the overwhelming odds presented by the current alien, daemon or heretic that is at hand. and when applied to my army as a whole, it makes even the basic tactical bolt gun wielding marines, look like a harden veterans, the living embodiments of the emperor's undying will, bent on the destruction of all whom appose him, as they should be

Muddy, a bit scratched, sometimes a bit of repairing, I try to look at photographs of tanks in combat amd go off them, it gives the most realistic feel.

Half and half.

Some of mine look weathered and battleworn, some of mine look factory fresh, some look as if they have seen a bit of service.

If going for the genuine effect, i think this approach works, as personal experience has taught me, not every piece of hardwear/kit is massively worn, nor factory fresh.

Same with my troops, some i wash to make them look dirty, some i dont, some i half do, so it looks as if they have some new, some old kit on.

Mixing it up a bit is the way forward to a realistic and good looking army.

I think I may end up going for that, considering that my army is a recently battletorn regiment, so as I get new units they will look shiny, however the other ones will look factory fresh, since they are

In the real world tanks don't tend to get too dirty/damaged, but you see a lot of repairs/official and unofficial upgrades.
