I go to rough it up/crew have made repairs. Bullet holes, the occasional hastily welded-on patch.

I tend to make my entire armies look a little careworn.

What is this battle damage you speak off ????

Never went into weathering and I dont see the need to show the vehicles in the middle of a conflict without halfway decent status.
If you look at some old pics, most vehicles were sorted out and pulled back for repairs, damage like its sometimes shown wont
be the case at the moment of the "game of 40k". So, I am not interested in an appearance of my vehicles that represents the vehicle after the game, if its not destroyed.

I did factory fresh with all my kits, until one day I messed up on a kit so to cover I battle damaged it. Everyone says it is their favorite and I have had tons of offers to sell it. My problem is that battle damage is like starting a whole new kit. I really struggle to find the right worn vs. destroyed look. ANY thoughts would be greatly appreciated. One GW salesman told me "When you ask yourself, is that enough? That is when you stop painting."

Factory fresh. Though that is kind of dictated by the fluff, as the Monolith self-repairs damage, and I can't imagine my Eldar letting blemishes stand on their tanks for long =P

Factory Fresh.

My Black Templars take great pride in their equipment, giving each tank, speeder, dreadnought, and bike a complete overhaul after each battle, skirmish, and Thanksgiving Day parade.

It's the right thing to do. They are gifts from the Emperor, therefore they are an extension of the Emperor.

Only a heretic, Xenos, or Space Wolf would allow his equipment to fall into disrepair.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

My CSM vehicles are more weathered and horrible than my other vehicles because they are Nurgle aligned.

However, my other vehicles are somewhere between "roughed up" and "dusty" to varying degrees. Mr ork vehicles are between "half destroyed" and "repaired by the crew".

Im an Ork player, but I still only like the worn out look for my Orks. I just cant bring myself to make them moving scrap heaps like so many people want Orks to look like.
When I play Tau, itll be factory Fresh. No self respecting army would let their things go out into conflict looking like its be rusting away in a ships hull for decades. (except Orks of course)

Well, considering that I play Orkz and Death Guard, factory fresh wouldn't really look right in my armies.
However, even though my vehicles are "ramshackled, rusting wrecks or decayed, rotting abominations" I still attempt to make them look as nice as I can.

I like immaculate, i figure SM never retreat, so your vehicle should be either immaculate or exploded!

Rough it up. All my armies vehicles have chips, scrapes and occasional bullet holes.
I figure that for SM, you're not going to pull a vehicle back to a strike cruiser after each engagement for a fresh coat of paint.
For SoB, they're too busy bringing death to heretics to worry about the odd chip (granted, these vehicles have far less damage however).
Guard however have to rely on their own initiative, hence bullet holes, chips, dents, and plenty of dust!

Honestly, it depends on the vehicle. When I used to play Imperial Guard (before Arby struck), my first Leman Russ had a lot of damage to represent its many engagements, but my 3rd Leman Russ was pretty much factory perfect.

In fact, the color of the Leman Russes in my army changed color as well, from a lighter grey to a darker grey to represent armor throughout the ages. (Okay, it was because I used different spraypaint but I thought of a good background reason for it)

Most of the time, I like the vehicles factory fresh, with maybe a little dust but nothing big.

Depends .. i like it with a full on battle damage for my Orks and Chaos , but the rest.. not so much . But i still love weathering , and therefore a wash of devlan mud is not to be concidered weathering in my book(that way i can still feel good..)

my razorback has barbed wire across the top, meltagun damage in the side, about 40 bullet holes in a long, snaking line across the side, bio-acid damage in the side, a demolisher shell wedged in the front, and shrapnel buried on the other side.
my other SM and steel legion tanks mostly have just bullet holes and chips, but my ork vehicles are half destroyed!

Since I play orks, there is only really one option for me, it should appear as though it has been destroyed several times over.

That really depends on the army for me:

My tau have mostly dirt and the occasional bullet hole on them, seeing as tau still know how to make their vehicles so have replacement parts on hand, with the exception of one hammerhead that has a rather large armor plate welded over to commomerate the first time it fell to a lasscannon shot.

The IG are a bit more roughed up with small repairs visible on several vehicles.

And iknow its not technically a vehicle as such but i have a big scar on the back of my regenerating Carnifex.

As for the SM i haven't painted them yet but i plan on having a little weapon damage on them with some repairs that are harder to spot than those on the IG tanks, to represent the techmarine's superior skill as compared to an IG field engineer.

I agree eldar shouldn't have damaged vehicles, they have almost every conflict planned in advance anyway.

Haven't painted up any of my vehicles yet. For Orks, hell yeah, they'll be rusty and dirty. For SM? Depends on the fluff of the chapter I pick. Extended campaigning and limited supplies warrants battle damage, specific climate may warrant environmental effects (Space Wolves would get some snow, etc.), preferred enemies would warrant specific trophies, etc. If I end up loving or hating the battle-damaging process, I'll make it a habit to avoid it or do it to all of my later models.

My problem with having any of the marine equipment in anything other than near pristine condition is the tremendous amount of downtime that they have between missions, the length of time spent between planets and the resources available to them. Also with that amount of downtime,if they are like any other military unit througout modern history, they will spend an inordinate of time checking and re-checking their equipment.

I would love to see a few pictures of that.

The Dreadnoughts will not have battle damage -- to leave such a venerated thing in disrepair would be a grave dishonor to the soul inside. I will probably rough up the Rhinos though, owing to them rushing into battle and getting generally banged up by terrain let alone enemies.

If I ever get crazy and make an IG army, totally going for serious roughing up.

The Chaos Marines will have battle damage. Who gives a crap if a Rhino gets punked, just steal another one the next time they invade an Imperial planet! They'll be too busy going crazy to really care about a bullet hole here or there.
