He drew vs Templars in the third. Finished in the top half, iirc.

Well, I played a Ghaz/Big Mek/BW/Walker Spam List. The missions were ok, but the terrain in my FLGS had overloaded the table. On two of my tables there was just enough room to drive one BW through. The first two tables I could not even put two Killa Kans side by side. The third mission it was deff rolla heaven. It was good to get back into big tournaments.

That is CRAZY. Most stores don't have enough terrain for a large tournament.

I brought LOLoganwing with LOLongfangs and NjaLOL. I made this list about 5 months ago, didnt even know what the missions were untill about 2 days before the event.

Logan, Njal, 6 squads of 5 termies with asscans, chainfists, and other varied equipment, 3 units of Long fangs with a combination of missile launchers, lascannons, and heavy bolters.

round 1 vs gazzy/bigmek/BWorks, got a massacre, didnt lose a single unit.
round 2 vs leafblower guard, got a massacre, only lost 1 full unit
round 3 vs assaulty space wolves, got a massacre, relatively close match compared to the other 2 of the day.

I took 1st place, the other space wolf player took 2nd, and a different B-wagon ork player took 3rd.

my total VP count was 66, killed over 6000 points of enemies throughout the day and gave up less than 2000 points. I dont know if I'll be bringing the same list to the semis

THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. I've heard that lament a lot, and what it boils down to is that many of the larger stores had poor players which let people get those massacres. When stores are filled with equally tough players there are a lot fewer massacres. Otherwise you're implying that he and the players in his store are ALL poor players. I'm sure you don't mean it that way, but just because you get a spanker who gives you massacre doesn't mean you'd do as well at another store. See what I mean, it doesn't sound very good turned around either. Just something to think about...

Actually, I think that larger venues make it even more of a crap-shoot. The larger it gets, the more likely you are to have 2 poor players playing against each other in the second round, which means you could get 3 "easy" players/lists and end up with 3 massacres. The only quantifiable measure would be a round robin, and we don't have time for that. 5 games will tend to show the really strong lists, but again, who has time?

Anecdotally, I think odds helped rather than hurt most people at large venues. I bet Mannahnin would have placed at any other venue than the one he was at. I've never played Blackmoor, but I'm pretty sure he would have too based on what I've heard previously.

That being said, anecdotal evidence is often unreliable. Increasing sample size is pretty reliable at shaking out odds though.

Look on the bright side, if you placed somewhere that there is ALOT of stiff competition your odds of winning later on are higher...that is if the competition your new adversaries went against was weaker in comparison...

LMAO!!! yeah, I bet the list looks familiar! I was going to bring Skulltaker, but he's sooo situational, and smart players just avoid him. Hard to avoid the Bloodthirster however...and if I have Blessing of the Blood God on them (next time) Mephiston is useless agianst them.

Well, I drew the first, was destroyed on the second and got a major victory on the third. At the start of the fourth round of the first game I started to get a horrible migrane headache from the crappy lights in my FLGS. I just placed stuff on the table the second game since I was in such pain. After a hand full of meds and an hour and half nap I was ready to go. I could see how my performance went down hill when the migrane kicked in. The list I took would have done well but it was the human factor that killed it for this year.

3 Hive Guard

10 Stealers (Tox, Scy)

10 Stealers (Tox, Scy)
7 Warriors (BS/LW, DeathSp, Tox, 1xBarb) in a pod w Cluster Spines

Trygon Prime
Trygon Prime
Trygon Prime

Store was about half vets and half newbies. There was one other Nid player and one Ork player, but the rest of it was half Guard half MEQ. Most people kind of just ignored the third mission under the assumption that both armies would get shafted anyhow.

Round one, faced Drop Pod based Loganwingish list. I made him go first and simply had my reserves emerge where needed. Long Wangs pretty much got completely neutralized by Ymgarls and one Trygon. Game ended with him having a character with one wound left in the table center and 4 objectives firmly in my control, 24 BPs for me.

Round Two, faced Ork Battle Wagon Spam (4 total) list, with Ghaz and tons of lootas and a giant Nob Biker Squad. He had some horrific luck with Ghaz's slow and purposful roles and spent all game chasing one hive guard unit. I had stealers whiff all over the place against nob bikers, but still managed to attrition them down into nothing but the Boss and one nob. Game ends in a draw with virtually nothing left on the table, 11 BPs for me.

Round Three, I faced Black Templars with 3 LRs and both special characters. His army had the tools to handle me and it looked bad for a while, but once the warriors and trygons showed up, it was pretty much all over for him, as the trygons ate two raiders and one of his special characters. The warriors also pretty much marched around and ate squads to shooting, so Helbrect and friends actually jumped back into their raider and hid most of the end of the game. End result was the full 24 BPs to me.

The other nid guy majored against the ork guy in round three (he had three majors on the day) and edged me by three points for first place. I took second. The guard guy with 80 some kill points in his army for scenario three massacred the guy in the last round anyhow and took third. I am going to QCR in June, however, so I passed the invite along to the 4th place guy (Deathwing DA).

We did the math and the third scenario really didn't affect the standings at all, in terms of placing. If anything, the couple of Pod armies were dominating people until they each ran into mech players.

Highlight of the day for me was Logan charging my Spore Pod, while carrying a wound, and dying to it before he got a swing off! Lowpoint of the tournament was my Ymgarls failing to kill any of Helbrects retinue and the overrun granting him enough movement to escape a charge from my Warriors in the following turn.

Overall, I was happy with my list, though certain armies were problematic in testing (Tri-lith Cron and Iyanden Footdar). The only unit that seemed wasted were the Hive Guard, but people seemed really obsessed with killing them so it worked out fine anyhow.

hey, I had two nob bikers left along with the boss, and that was after they killed two squads of stealers and two tyrgons, and both warrior primes, oh and the spore pod.

Third game I pulled the other nids player and I was sad, I had something around 30 KPs total, and he had like 17?

If it were regular KPs I woulda won the game by two /cryabout3rdmissionmorenoobs

I was destroyed by rolls for the most part of the day. I missed a huge assault in the third game, 20 boys hope out of a wagon to assault a tervigon surrounded by 4 units of termigaunts, 3 inches to go, I can make that right?

WRONG

Failed, and the boys got shot by everything, then double assaulted, and still ended up winning with just a couple boys left... but by then I was far too weakened to come back. THen Gaz failed ANOTHER move through cover assault rolls on the guys' second tervigon. My dice decided to hate me for the day...

I wish I hadn't been so engrossed in my own game, because your game looked interesting, given the odd little bit of this little bit of that nature of Eagle's list. He took a lot of stuff that I would never consider. I was suprised to hear you were having trouble, given how bloody our game was and my army was much more assault focused.

like I said, dice absolutely killed me.

20 boys hitting swarmlord with only one wound left, and he lived for two rounds of combat.

Nob bikes effectively taken out by raveners with some genestealer help later on... but I mean come on! Sure they had FNP up, and my bikes got 1 ws from swarmlord, but still.

Our game was a complete massacre for both of us though, that was hilarious... we both had like, 5 models left on the board.. absolutely epic right there.

You did have some terrible dice rolls - that I have to admit. And I made some pretty silly mistakes - like forgetting to charge your BW with my Trygon and feeding you a couple of kill points by charging your boyz with my gaunts. I'm still learning the army really. Hopefully I'll run a much tighter ship for the next round. I thought it was a very fun game though - considering the competitive nature of the tournament.

...which is bad how, exactly? It's a tournament. People play other people of varying list and skill. I'm glad some players are "good players" and deserve to win more. Why don't we just let the ""good players" automatically roll sixes and get rid of all that... what's it called... chance?

At the store I played at, Top table for Round 3 was Massacre +3 and Draw +3 (36 points). So no, a draw in the first round does not put you out. Especially since you would get a softer seed for round 2 than if you got a massacre.

I wish I played in your store. I ended up with 2 massacres and 1 draw for 58 BP and 6500 VPs. That would have been good enough to win in most stores, but I came in 5th.

My comment was just lamenting the fact that I had a good player in round one, and not a poor/mediocre player.
I don't think so. If you arent good enough to be even in the top 3, then you don't deserve to go to the 2nd round. Those 4 others who fought better deserve to.

Just for the sake of argument, if one country had fifty competitors in one event that were better than every other country on the face of the planet, but they were only allowed to take five of them to the olympics, you wouldn't feel like the next couple down got short-changed?

Not quite the same :-). Blackmoor is assuming the area he went to has some of the best players concentrated together. By the same note, I could have assumed all his 3 opponents were scrubs, therefore giving him those massacres/major win.
And even if he did manage to get pass into 2nd round, I doubt he would do well since in his area alone, there are already like 4 people better than him.

It just strikes me that this is the size of tournament that could do with more rounds if you can get two massacres and a major victory and not place.

Eh?

No reason why you can't drive a battlewagon over terrain! For ruins and things that you can't physically place the model on that aren't impassible, put some dice down or some other means of marking your position until you can move somewhere better.
