I got third at my store last year, getting a major loss second round to Dan Smilek and his green bugs of doom. If you play, you should play for the competition. Rather then the prizes. I would rather get knocked out of contention round 1, then round 3, as after round 1 I can relax and just goof off the rest of the day.

At the store I played at, Top table for Round 3 was Massacre +3 and Draw +3 (36 points). So no, a draw in the first round does not put you out. Especially since you would get a softer seed for round 2 than if you got a massacre.
I wish I played in your store. I ended up with 2 massacres and 1 draw for 58 BP and 6500 VPs. That would have been good enough to win in most stores, but I came in 5th.
My comment was just lamenting the fact that I had a good player in round one, and not a poor/mediocre player.

Are you just lamenting this fact? Or suggesting that TOs avoid pairing up good players round 1. The second would be shady.

I got a major win on my first opponent only because he was a slow playing IG, with lots of troops (not a bad guy mind you, just not really fast with a large model count army) Second game I almost got tabled. Put me and my last opponent out of running for even 3rd. He offered me a massacre as his first two opponents were difficult players and he was pretty much done for the day. Difficult as in whiny and argumentative on everything. We chose to play the game out as I wanted to see how well I would do against his list. It went badly for me and he would have crushed me. On the other hand it was the most enjoyable game of the day as their was really no pressure to do well.
BTW, I play Tau.

True it would have been nice to beat a newb, but you never know how things will end up until the end.
And by round 2 or 3 (if your TO is matching right), you're back to the same problem, you're playing a good player who can knock you out in one go.
I was on first table on 3 tied for first until I get my butt chewed off.

I dont find holofields that useful. At 35 pts, they make it more likely for the fire prism to survive, but they also make it more likely that you lose the prism cannon... which is just as bad as the fire prism dying really...
As for the Eldrad thing...Damnit, I wish I had thought of that! I was instead using eldrad to guide the scatterwalkers (which actually paid off since they almost eliminated entire units of boyz on their own, just the cleanup crews couldn't handle what was left in the end.

I placed third with a hybrid Space Wolves list with Thunderwolves with a Wolf Lord, a big unit of Terminators with Logan, 40 Drop Podding Grey Hunters, melta Scouts, and two units of missile launcher Long Fangs.
I had a major victory in Round 1 against gun line Ultramarines. I tabled him but only had three objectives. Round 2 I had a major loss against Mech Guard, my Thunderwolves never arrived from reserve when we had to stop so they counted as being destroyed. If they had shown up it would've been a draw. In Round 3 I played against Deamon Hunters with allied Guard and tabled him for a massacre.
Mech Guard and Bloodcrusher spam Deamons are the only armies that give me trouble. The player who won our tourny was playing Bloodcrusher spam and he massacred the Mech Guard player who beat me in round two which gave me third place by 8pts.

Knights of Blood: The chapter is in both the blood angels & chaos codex, used the BA version.
I actually made this army as a non ard boys army so I can have fun with some conversions, as most of the army is converted Khorne Zerkers.
HQ
The Sanguinator
Librarian with a jump pack, shield of Sanguinius, and unleash rage.
Elites
2 Sanguinary priests with combi meltas
1 Unit of Sanguinary Guard with the chapter banner
Troops
5 full ten man squads of assault marines with 5 thunder hammers, 10 melta guns, and 2 infernus pistols
Fast Attack
2 full ten man squads of scout bikers with 2 power fists
Excluding independent characters my list only has 3 types of units so it can be called K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) at best, or spam at worst. With the presence of the Sanguinator and 20 scout bikers my list is defiantly not cookie cutter, but it can work well if played well against just about anything. The only lists I see giving me any problems are very power weapon heavy lists such as a DeathWing/Logan Wing, A nid list that is really heavy on Lash Whip & Bone Sword warriors, and a BA list that is full of Sanguinary Guard. The Death Wing, Logan Wing, and Nid Warrior lists would be difficult to deal with because of the power weapons, but I can outmaneuver them and thus control the battle fighting it under my terms so I still feel I'm perfectly capable of beating them, and furthermore they are not popular armies and so unlikely to run into them . The only list I really wouldn't be able to handle would be a boatload of Sanguinary Guard, or Tyranid Shrieks.
Mission #1
Opponent was a blood angels list with Dante, Astaroth, Sanguinary Priests, and nothing but Sanguinary Guard and Honor Guard. I think it was 5 units of SG and 1 unit of HG, his model count was under 30.
Results: Yea umm...about not being able to handle 25 or more Sanguinary Guard or Tyranid Shrieks... The only way I could beat a list like that is if I were to outplay my opponent by a large margin, and despite the fact he fielded what many would consider a very uncompetitive list the guy was a good player who knew what he was doing. I lost the roll for 1st turn, and my opponent made the correct decision to go 2nd. He just didn't make any mistakes that I could capitalize on, and his list was the rock to my scissors. I lost this one 2 objectives to 3, with my opponent having the last movement phase because he chose to go 2nd sealing my fate. The insult to injury was the tournament had an odd number of players so this list was the store's ringer army, lulz it was like the universe was pulling a sick practical joke on my army. After round 1 I figured I could not come back, and was just in it for the fun of 2 more games.
Mission #2
Opponent was a Noise Marine army with 2 defilers, a land raider, 2 cc dreads, termies, oblits, and a lot of noise marines. I got to go 1st with my scout bike alpha strike destroying 3 Rhinos, a unit of noise marines, and crippling a 4th Rhino. After that the battle just got bloodier and bloodier. The battle was all CC and short range firepower such as meltas on my end and twin linked plasma guns from oblits on the other. The walkers fell quickly to melta guns, and I ended up tabeling my opponent for a massacre result, but I only had 7 models left on the table by the end of the game.
Mission #3
Opponent was Uthwe Eldar. Eldrad, Avatar, 2 wraithguard, 3 wave serpents, 1 falcon, 2 rangers, 1 fire dragon, 2 banchies, and a lot of guardians with heavy weapons platforms. The scout bikes worked great, they did a turbo boost in front of my army but inside the 6" FNP bubble and took all of the Eldar's firepower while only taking 6 casualties. The Avatar and wraithlords advanced while the rest of the army hung back. The Sanguinator and the Avatar ended up locked in 8 rounds of CC before the Avatar won. A large amount of melta & thunderhammers brought the 2 wraithlords down, the surviving scout bikes attacked pathfinders, and the rest of my army advanced while the eldar shot away at assault marines. After the wraithlords fell the wave serpents ended up getting melta'd into slag, the banchies and fire dragons ended up killing a bunch of marines before they were swarmed by assault marines and killed. A giant CC involving the Sanguinary Guard, multiple squads of assault marines, banchies, eldrad, dire avengers, guardians, and my outflanking scout bikes. Once the dust settled we both had 9 points for killing 3 fast units, and I had 7 more points for killing 7 non fast units for a massacre result. It was just enough to get me into 3rd place and allow me to advance to round 2.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Placed 2nd with a Priest/Fang Wolves list this year. I was tempted to make the super AT squad with Logan, but decided to split all those points elsewhere. I had orginally planned to play a fully mech list with 10 Rhino Chasis and 3 Speeders and dropped a good bit of $$ to be able to field it.
After talking with friends the day before the tourney about the missions I spent that night revamping the whole thing due to that last one being brutal to mech. I cut 18 easily attainable points from my list and as it turns out I picked up more firepower than I had before the switch. I admit I missed the Speeders and their versatility, but they were 9 very easy points to lose and had to go. With no DoW deployment my fangs would be in position unleashing the extra Lascannons from turn 1, and I picked up the lost melta by adding it to the squads.
Anyways on to the final product.
4x RP with Choosers. All had LL and mixed powers/gear for each. 2- Rhinos 2- LF squads.
4x GH(5) Razors w/ Melta. 2x TLL 2x Las/Plas
2x GH(6) Rhinos w/ Melta and MotW
2x LF(6) 3xML 2xLC
1x LF(6) 4xML 1xLC
1x Elite Inquisitor+Retinue (hood/tarot) 3xHB gun servitors.
1x WG(5) Cyclone ML in each unit, 2x Combi Plas in unit.
1x WG(10) Split into one unit of 5 (see above) Other five split to squads: 2-Unit Sargeants for Rhino squads with Combi Melta, 2- Extra wound models for LF squads, 1-Cylcone for LF squad with only 1 Lascannon.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know My name is the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon thee. |

Actually if that was going to happen to me I would rather have it happen early than late. At least if it happens earlier you normally have a chance to make up the points in the follow on games. Unless there is large proportion of good gamers at the event and than you are screwed no matter what because some have the chance to max out.
At the end its all or nothing. Guess its how you look at it.

I Mundar's defense, it was 100 degrees outside, and about 90 degrees inside, so the heat was oppressive.
There was another store running the event at 6:00pm, so after round 2 there were a lot that bailed out to go to the later event when they knew they were out of contention. In hindsight I should have just gone to the second event because of lack of sleep, it is cooler at night, and less people.
And it was just unluck of the draw who I drew in round #1. With those missions, and the armies that were there, it was all about the match ups. If I get Mundar in any other round but the first, I win, but that mission favored him. It was all about timing, and what opponent you drew on round #3.
And yes, you can win even in a bad match up, but it is hard. I massacred a 11 KP Tyranid army in mission #3 with me having 25 KPs.

Went to the same place I did last year (Adventurer's Guild in Riverside CA) with my revised Nid List:
War Prime (2xBS, Tox, Reg, Adr, DeathSp)
War Prime (2xBS, Tox, Adr, Rend)
10 Ymgarls
3 Hive Guard
3 Hive Guard
10 Stealers (Tox, Scy)
10 Stealers (Tox, Scy)
10 Stealers (Tox, Scy)
7 Warriors (BS/LW, DeathSp, Tox, 1xBarb) in a pod w Cluster Spines
Trygon Prime
Trygon Prime
Trygon Prime
Store was about half vets and half newbies. There was one other Nid player and one Ork player, but the rest of it was half Guard half MEQ. Most people kind of just ignored the third mission under the assumption that both armies would get shafted anyhow.
Round one, faced Drop Pod based Loganwingish list. I made him go first and simply had my reserves emerge where needed. Long Wangs pretty much got completely neutralized by Ymgarls and one Trygon. Game ended with him having a character with one wound left in the table center and 4 objectives firmly in my control, 24 BPs for me.
Round Two, faced Ork Battle Wagon Spam (4 total) list, with Ghaz and tons of lootas and a giant Nob Biker Squad. He had some horrific luck with Ghaz's slow and purposful roles and spent all game chasing one hive guard unit. I had stealers whiff all over the place against nob bikers, but still managed to attrition them down into nothing but the Boss and one nob. Game ends in a draw with virtually nothing left on the table, 11 BPs for me.
Round Three, I faced Black Templars with 3 LRs and both special characters. His army had the tools to handle me and it looked bad for a while, but once the warriors and trygons showed up, it was pretty much all over for him, as the trygons ate two raiders and one of his special characters. The warriors also pretty much marched around and ate squads to shooting, so Helbrect and friends actually jumped back into their raider and hid most of the end of the game. End result was the full 24 BPs to me.
The other nid guy majored against the ork guy in round three (he had three majors on the day) and edged me by three points for first place. I took second. The guard guy with 80 some kill points in his army for scenario three massacred the guy in the last round anyhow and took third. I am going to QCR in June, however, so I passed the invite along to the 4th place guy (Deathwing DA).
We did the math and the third scenario really didn't affect the standings at all, in terms of placing. If anything, the couple of Pod armies were dominating people until they each ran into mech players.
Highlight of the day for me was Logan charging my Spore Pod, while carrying a wound, and dying to it before he got a swing off! Lowpoint of the tournament was my Ymgarls failing to kill any of Helbrects retinue and the overrun granting him enough movement to escape a charge from my Warriors in the following turn.
Overall, I was happy with my list, though certain armies were problematic in testing (Tri-lith Cron and Iyanden Footdar). The only unit that seemed wasted were the Hive Guard, but people seemed really obsessed with killing them so it worked out fine anyhow.

My list
Ghazzgull
Big Mek with KFF
10 Nobs, painboy, eavy armor, cybork, 4 PK,3BigChopa,2choppa, indivisdualized for wound allocation
in battlewagon with deffrolla
4 trukk boy mobs with nob(PK), one of the mobs were 'ard boys
10 gretchin
21 shoota boys, with nob(PK), 2 big shootas
8 burnaboys, 2 meks with KMB
6 kommandos/2 burnas
snikrot
3 deffkoptas/rokiits/buzzsaws
Battlewagon/deffrolla(burnas rode in this)
I drew the first game vs crimson fists space marines with pedro, I should have had a major victory but I charged off of two objectives and ran out of time.
2nd game I masssacred nilla space marines. The TO changed the table quarter rules to "any" unit can claim a table quarter instead of 'scoring" units. That cost me 1 battle point.
3rd was pretty much a nightmare. I played vs horde orks. The guy didn't know many common rules pertaining to orks. We had many arguments costing us a lot of time, such as:
#1 KFF is measured from the hull of the vehicle(He disputed tried to say that the big mek had to be outside of the vehicle to work) TO had to rule against him.
#2 He argued against deff rollas working on vehicles. I said they FAQd it, and he asked me if I had the FAQ. I said no, so he thought he had me, until the TO came over and helped rule it correctly
#3 He didn't even know how the basic wound allocation worked and was upset that I was spreading wounds on my nob unit. Again had to bring TO over.
#4 He tried to charge my battlewagon's deff rolla. I told him he had to reach the actual hull. (Note: I had been disembarking correctly by not using the deffrolla as a disembarkation point.) Again had to get TO over to rule it correctly.
He had a large unit of 'ard boys that were not modeled as 'ard boys. they were just regular boys with mad dok in the mob. He did tell me that they were 'ard boys but it was hard to remember this fact in the heat of battle when they were all plastic. Not entirely his fault but still kind of an annoyinhg thing about 'ardboys.
So I ended up with a minor loss, and 6th place out of 22.
I learned a fairly valuable lesson from the 3rd game and the TFG I played. I need to bring the FAQ's and stuff with me next time I go to a tourny.

To be honest, if it weren't for a few bone head mistakes on my part in game 1 and also some mistakes in game 3(vs orks incidentally) I very easily could have(really should have) had 3 wins. Those orks are really hard to beat.

Seriously though, it seems like Dash posts every game and so far he has been a beast.

Looks more like a lime, or possibly a melon to me.

Yes...I have a shirt with my Avatar on it.
I have two tournament shirts:
Shirt #1 says "I like long WAAAAUGHS! on the beach" on the front.
Shirt #2 says on the front "Dashofpepper, then has a big picture of my avatar, and underneath says "Postin' in ur threadz." On the back it says "D to the Ork"
The meme is "melon hat" but that's a lime. Unfortunately I didn't invent it.
And....a note to the general public; if you want to game against me and don't play in the big events, you can always catch me on Vassal for a fight. I'm friendly and easy going; I took the Hulksmash Sportsmanship 101 classes. =p Although if you smack-talk me or call me a liar about my record, I'm going to insist that your challenge be backed by a wager since you're so confident that I'm making it all up. =)

Boosting Space Marine Biker

I played vanilla marines.
My list (in a nutshell)
HQs - Vulcan and Master of the Forge
Troop - 4 10man in pods with meltas
Elites - 3 ironclads with flamers and a couple meltas
Heavy - MMelta dreads and an asault cannon dread
Fast - 2 typhoon speeders and a flamer speeder
Everything was in pods (10 in all).
My list performed... scratch that, I performed well in the first 2 rounds. I tied my opponent playing Nids in Round 1. I got a Major victory in round 2 against vanilla marines.
I got hosed in round three though. I could have at least pulled a tie if I deployed better. I was playing against chaos marines, he was deployed all in the middle. If I had just dropped my first 5 pods into one of the sides, I could have picked apart his army with only some difficulty (and this is what my opponent said). As it stood, I dropped in the middle of the table and got picked off by his range squads.
Once my troops were down though he had some trouble. My vulcan squad and my MotF squad were awesome. Vulcan and co. got into combat with a deamon prince. He swung all at vulcan and I saved them all. My 4 relic blade attacks all hit, all wounded, and he saved none of them. Vulcan alone took down a prince.
My MotF squad was hit charged by a troops and a 10 man squad of raptors. In 2 rounds of fighting, my 10 man squad and MotF took out all 20 enemy models. Only the MotF and a sarge was left, but against lightning clawed squads with twice as many attacks, I will call that one a big win.
However, his range took out my dreads and his remaining prince took out another squad. He lost a lot in the end, but I lost everything except 1 speeder and half my pods. I got 2 battle points and he got 3. I got 7 KP off of him, but he got 27 off of me (dam 3kp for fast movers and HQ rule).
Overall, for my first ard boyz, I was happy with 7th out of 14. If I drew with my last opponent, I would have gotten 4th as a lot of people drew in the third I think and the points were close.
It was fun and I will definitely be doing it again next time.

I'm sad that I failed to dominate ard boyz this year but
I managed to forget a veteran squad at home and ran with 2,315 points and still fought on the top tables for 2nd place... Darn Eldar. I hates em' and my IG hates em' even more. Guess I'll be attacking the tourney scene with renewed vengeance for a while.
My list, or close to it.

Inquisitor Lord, Psychic hood, Psycannon, sage, 2 mystics (on foot)

Funny, reading all these posts I noticed there were few to NO Daemon Armies...
I played at GMI Games (Riverside, Ca)....
1st Place myself w/Khorne Daemons
2nd Place was George Mason and his Blood Angels
3rd Place went to Josh Stevens and his Space Wolves
Runners up were 2 I.G. and one Blood Angels (i think).
